just thought i'd introduce myself...

Hello!

I'm very excited/apprehensive to be here!  I joined becasue I've been effectively not doing 80% of my job for nearly a full year and need to start work again but i'm paralyzed!  This is my first step to getting some help since the anxiety is nearly killing me.

questions

Do all procratinators also suffer from depression or disthymia?

Are most procrastinators from tertiary educations backgrounds?

Have you ever been told "You have NO SENSE OF URGENCY!"?

My father told me today that he has never detected a sense of urgency in me, even though I should feel urgency about getting things done.  Actually a former professor, who I had a falling out with, said the same thing, and my wife (relationship currently on the rocks), etc.

When I was young I often fought with my temper-tantrum throwing bigger, older brother, and I think I learned to simply shut down, because I never won a fight, either intellectually or physically, and learned simply not to fight.

Daily check-ins less and less effective for me

I really hate how difficult it is to break old habits. When I first joined this site I was doing very well especially because of the daily check-ins. I felt like I would be publicly embarrassed by my peers if I didn't get at least half of my stuff done. Lately, I have just stopped caring if I knock off stuff on the checklist or not, and my procrastination has increased. What have you all done to regain effectiveness from the daily check-ins?

Thanks,

Unhelpful husband

This is a grumble about my beloved other half - I really don't know the best way of handling this.

Ack!

Okeeday.  This is my first forum post.  I'm nervous about joining this group because it means that I may actually have to do something about my problem.  Well, I guess I've put off doing something about it for long enough.  I'm ready to dig out of this morass.

Still.  Ack!  Seriously

new here & figuring the site & PA out

Hi- I just joined (well, joined a couple weeks ago & just got on today). I am constantly overwhelmed with too many tasks, including some ambitious ones, and nevertheless find myself wasting hours of time when I really do want to be productive and when I know for sure that if I can only start, I will even get interested. I am sick of living like this (and at a point where I need to take hold of my career and finances or I am sunk).

medication for procrastination?

Hi everyone.

Has anyone found any anxiety or depression meds which have helped with their procrastination?

I'm aware that my procrastination behaviour has two distinct parts - severe anxiety about a task followed by avoidance of said task in order to reduce the anxiety. As I don't seem to have the self-discipline to overcome the avoidance, I was wondering if chemically treating the anxiety might be a better option for me.

Or am I just looking for a quick fix where none exists....

All the best,

Caroline

My first time

Hi all, I've just joined.  I'm a 56 year old doctor, working full-time (but fortunately not out-of-hours) and caring for my disabled husband and three cats.  I started a new job in January after 20 years in the previous one. This has involved moving 170 miles from London to South Yorkshire.  The job's great but any hope I had that starting with a clean slate would help me not procrastinate has gone out of the window - 10 weeks in, and I've got an embarrasing backlog of reports to write.

Think this is just what I need!

Hi all, this is my first post. I have been struggling with chronic procrastination for about ten years, which was when I was diagnosed with 'depression' because of living in an abusive relationship. I've been three years away from abuse now but the 'depression', 'brain deadness' persists.

1st Post, wondering where to start

hello everybody, this is my first post here. I am 16, and i started worrying about my habits. they're awful. i want to go to the air force academy in a couple years, and i know im physically and mentally capable. and while i do very well on standardized tests, my schoolwork is suffering, mostly because of procrastination. During a particuarly bad session of procrastination and surfing the internet (instead of schoolwork!), i found this site. the irony was not lost on me, and i joined immediately.

again again

Hello,
I haven't checked in for a long, long time. Even though I haven't been a regular contributor, this group has been in my thoughts on a fairly regular basis. I have long tried to find a name for my compulsive behavior. I've resisted calling it procrastination, because that sounds slightly humorous and far too benign. But I still keep coming back to it as the most accurate way to describe my self-destructive behaviors and patterns.

First post as a P.A. member

Alright so I just signed up to P.A. and i'm sure i'm not alone with where do I start so...

I'm 25 years old and just moved back from vancouver B.C. Canada to the small town where my dad lives to work and save money to move to NYC. My mom is american so I can work both places.

Nip this in the bud...its time!

My name is Nik and I am finally ready to do something about this procrastination problem. About to graduate college I am sick of not being productive because I am capable of many things and I have been disappointing myself and those around me. It is time...I have procrastinated about defeating procrastination long enough...

New here, desiring drastic change

Hi everyone!

Question about "productive" procrastination

Well...after I did my check-in today I was overcome by an urge to clean out my stash of old magazines. So I spent an hour cutting out the recipes and such, and tossing the rest.

It sounds good, in theory, but it wasn't on my list. And if I were going to interrupt my list for a cleaning/organizing project, there are other MUCH more pressing issues I could have tackled. Looking at the piles of dirty laundry threatening to topple over and bury me...

Does anyone else do this?

New Guy Etc

26/m from North Carolina. I'm self-employed and take care of my disabled fiancee. I'm tired of doing the bare minimum to get by (and sometimes less), but every time I've tried to commit to doing something differently, it lasts a day or two, and then I'm back into the same old stuff.

So yeah, hi everybody, and good luck me.

Obesssion about finishing things...

Sometimes I get partway done with something, and I realize it isn't what I expected, or I realize there is something more important I should be doing, or I don't need it, or whatever. The logical thing to do on such an occasion would be to abandon it and simply "move on." But often I don't want to do that, so I keep at it until the end.

Like TV shows. If I've watched about half of the show, I feel obligated to watch it until the end.

New Here --- For the 2nd time

Good morning,

I discovered, joined, and posted on this site in December 2008.  Like many, I was overcome with relief learning that other people were suffering from chronic (and clinical) procrastination and were experiencing the same challenges and obstacles as was I.  Unfortunately, for whatever reason, I lost interest and haven't participated since (at least until now).
