Procrastination and Fear of Failure: Chicken and Egg?

Working Step 10, I've made these observations:

time-specific support request

A topic for anyone to use when requesting support at a particular time.

Introducing myself. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to do so.

Male 32 year old guy from Austria,
Europe.

I recently happened to read the
autobiography of a recovering alcoholic, who went on to become a
minor showbiz-celebrity in the U.S.A.

Nothing to write home about, really.

Fear of Failure?

I realized today that I dislike difficult challenges.  That is not the same thing as being lazy.  I generally work hard and am responsible.  But I take pleasure in doing things that I'm good at, that I find easy, and that I usually excell at.  When I do a good job at something that was not very challenging for me, people often notice how good it is, and this reinforces my sense of being a smart and important person.  I pat myself on the back, even when I didn't have to work all that hard.  I bet this is why I keep my expectations of myself pretty low.

Ritual Mistakes and Ritual Prevention??

I've been on this board a few times over the years and it always helped me.  Sometimes I think of schizophrenics who hit bottom and then take their medications to make themselves get better and then when life starts going well again they think they don't need the medication so they stop taking it and then it gets bad again...  That's me.

Well actually I guess not THAT bad.  But it's an analogy anyway.

Accountability in close relationships

I hit a new low yesterday, after a week of feeling quite good and doing "something" at least. "Something" means that I did every "around" the paper without writing anything. I am supposed to deliver this tomorrow, but had planned on delivering end of July. Yes, I am a chronic procrastinator.

Procrastinator's Laws of Inertia

Hi Mollie:

I don't know if this is any help to you, but I'll throw in an exchange I had in the CI forum a while back in which I likened procrastination to Newton's laws of inertia:

(I was quoted from an online chat; also see my followup reply to this posting.)

In summary: procrastinators at rest tend to stay at rest, those in motion tend to stay in motion (but beware of motion that is non-productive).

How to get momentum going?

Back to PA today after months away. During some of that time, I did incredibly well. But I have been really stuck on a particular project that brought me back today. And I did make more progress on it than I have in ages. Yet, I was unable to build any momentum. So the idea of working on it again now seems just as daunting as it did this morning.

I see that using a timer almost always helps me overcome inertia and get started. But once I stop, even briefly, the inertia is right back again.

sensory processing disorder?

has anyone here been diagnosed with SPD (sensory processing disorder)? some of the strategies from SPD treatment are helping me a little (especially when I'm at rock bottom). for example, i drink a hot tea, i bounce on a yoga ball, i chew gum while starting my work, i play the piano for a few moments. i am thinking about doing a couple of sessions with one of my specialists on it and try and see if it helps procrastination.

Introducing myself TJinWA

Hello,

I am hoping to overcome years of entrenched procrastination habits.  I recognize them but have not been able to overcome.  I seem to want the panic of waiting until it "has to be done or else" but I DO NOT LIKE IT.  So here I am.  I will be checking out the daily check in as I believe it is true if you tell someone else what you plan/should be doing you are more likely to do it.  I hope so.

Thanks for being here.

Luck of the procrastinators?

OUTLOOK lovers

Does anyone prefer to use Outlook to keep a task list?
I am looking for an accountablity partner. We could assign the task list to each other and send a task report to confirm if we have done the task or not.
Feel free to send me a message on  if you are interested.

Introducing myself

Hi!

I am new here, and I absolutely fascinated by this website, since almost everything I read speaks to (and of) me, somehow.

Hi and intro from new participant wrkinprogrss

Hi, All,

I'm new here--I've been looking for a good place to post my daily to-do lists, as I find that I do better at accomplishing things if I tell other people I'm going to do them and if I can claim public credit for getting them done.

New here and I want to start a meeting in my area

Hi Everyone!

Need Someone to Hold Me Accountable

Hi guys, I'm a 20yo m living in Toronto. I'd like to find someone to just tell what I'm doing every day with something like schedule phone calls. We can keep each other on track.

Anyways, The reason I'm posting my location is to meet with someone else who procrastinates online and lives in Toronto, and also works at home. We could work together and keep each other on track.

We can talk on skype if you live in a different country to talk free or something. Emails also work.

That is all.

Feeling overwhelmed

It's Monday morning and I've got the whole morning to myself in the office.  I've got a long list of things that need doing, with about 6 items on the urgent list.  The urgent alone will take all morning.  And I'm fielding various phone calls as well, as the only time people can get hold of me is on an office morning.

Compiling stories for our very own PA "One Day at a Time" book

Hi there - I'm thinking it would be a great thing to start to compile stories for a PA "One Day at a Time" (ODAT), or mediation, book.
You know, a daily reader on various topics related to procrastination.

I think a really, REALLY easy way to do that would be for people to post entries in one section on the PA site regarding this. I'm thinking that section could be here! :)
