Making Choices Impairs Subsequent Self-Control

this article says that the act of making choices depletes the same psychological resource we use to stay on task.

I certainly find that i am face with an overwhelming number of choices every day. Sometimes i feel like everything is a choice and nothing is a forgone conclusion.

And i feel that is exhausting. Maybe these researchers are onto something.

I am a Chronic Procrastinator - Part I

Hi,

I'm Alex and I'm a chronic procrastinator.  I just got fired from my job on Monday, due to what I'm gradually coming to recognize is problems with extremely chronic procrastination.  I work in finance (doing budgets and analysis), and I'm realizing that I may have picked a very bad career for a chronic procrastinator.  (How I got THIS far is a bit of a surprise).

Self Imposed Expectations -- Friend or Foe

1/3/09 Tomorrow will mark the end of my 20 min task list used to keep me from watching TV all week. It worked, I was very motivated and focused however, I am not quite satisfied with what the final results will be. I did keep moving and I did accomplish more then what I have in the past. However:

Fear of success

New Member Intro

Hi,

New member intro

Hi Abel  here.

I have been a procrastinator for as long as I can remember.  I remember struggling with homework since grade 4.  It was the bane of my existence.

I was always told I was bright, and put into advanced classes.  I always did well at things at the beginning but it would always eventually degrade to a kind of bland mediocrity and everyone around me (parents, teachers, etc) would be disappointed.  I  tried various sports and the result was similar.

I Need Help ASAP!!!

I don't know what to do. I'm panicked, I feel horrible and I think I've ruined everything for myself. I don't know how to describe what it is that I do, but the short version is that I am a junior in college and have received excellent grades for most of my life, but ever since sophomore year I've been bombing at school. I put myself into this zone where I don't think about my school work, and by the time I finally have to confront the work that I've been missing, it's almost always too late to fix anything.

message from Lark

Lark asked me to post a message for him. I don't know why he's not able to log in. I can log in with his username and password, but he cannot. It is a mystery.

In any case, Lark has not been able to log in since November (for unknown reasons) and he would like the friends he made here to know that he thinks of them often. In other words, he's not disappearing because he doesn't care, but because he can't log in.

Overcoming "fake helplessness"

-
In the 12-Step sense of Step One, I am powerless over my addiction.

However, in this message, I'm writing about something different.

In this message, I'm writing about "fake helplessness" and not actual "Step One Powerlessness".

In the past, I've felt "helpless" to change. I didn't feel that I was able to do the tasks that needed to be done. I doubted my capabilities and strengths.

help required

Hi,

I am so _______

Fill in the blank. Its a seven letter word. Rhymes with rude, which I'd be if I actually used the word.

I have two essays due tomorrow. I haven't started either of them. I've decided I'll start it RIGHT after I eat dinner (same ole procrastinator mentallity).

Hopefully it will snow/sleet bad enough that my school will close.

I have to start applying to colleges. I've hardly filled out a college application. I don't feel like doing it.

Hello - New Member

Hey Everybody,

Social anxiety?

I'm curious if anybody here has SAD. I do, and it connects to my procrastination a lot.

I'm a chronic procrastinator with no idea what to do

Hi all, I got a link to this site through one of your members on www.olganon.org.

Hello

I'm Vince and I believe I am a procrastinator.

Ready to fix this once and for all

Hi all,

Let me get the dorkiness of my user name out of the way: I chose Peregrine2009 because I want to fly high in the next year, just like a peregrine falcon. I swear I didn't realize how dorky it was until I started writing this post.
