Reaching Out

After wasting most of my afternoon, I find myself here. I started coming to this site last week after I had a day similar to this one. Sitting around and waiting for the "special moment" to get going on my work again.

My procrastinatin is taking a serious mental toll on me right now. I recently graduated from grad school and miraculously found a job in this economy. But I'm doing nothing to prevent myself from getting let go. Is the job difficult? Sure, but not impossible work. Stuff I'm familiar with at the very least. I now I can do it but I choose not to.

Taking a break: what works for you?

Some of us have been chatting about this. How it's hard to know when it's right to take a break, or when it's goofing off.. and what kinds of break serve recovery. So here's a place to share thoughts about that.

Thanks, y'all, for being here.

sort of my first post

Hello,

Hello, my first post

I just came across this website and something in me said "Today is the day".  I've just gotten tired of waiting until the last minute to do everything.

Everything is so cluttered for me (literally and figuratively) that I can never get started.  Or I get started and after a few minutes put things down.
I really want to change things around.  The quote for the website is so true: "Procrastination is the grave in which opportunity is buried."  I'm ready to live.

My wake up call

Some advice that helps me out (Where do I post this?)

Hi guys, since I am new here, I'd like
to contribute a bit.

This post is mostly about discipline,
but I will talk about other things as well. I read this in
“Meditation for dummies” by Stephan Bodian. I will put this into
my own words so I don't break the copy right law.

Task tracking systems away from the computer

When I'm working--which is usually at the computer--i've used MS Outlook with mixed success. The success is when I've used the tools it offers, organized in a way that I find helpful. Mixed is when I've not had the sort of support that I find here and get off track. But that's not Outlook's fault.

Glad to hear that I am not the only one.

Hi I am 20 and been procrastinating on my Education since High
School. I went to 2 different high schools and graduated from a
charter H.S. when I was 18 and got my H.S. Diploma, not a GED.

New member - former(?) procrastinator turned chronic liar needs help (LONG)

Hi there,

here's my story. I'm 30, and currently still in college and living with my family. I spended 7 or 8 of the last 10 years in a weird state, basically paralyzed, wasting my days doing abolutely nothing and periodically lying about the state of my life, my studies, and my relationships to anybody who dared to ask. My academic life was struggling terribly: in 8 years I attended approximately 12 exams out of 26 I was supposed to pass (in 5 years, btw).

When work distracts you from work

One of the most insidious ways in which I can procrastinate on urgent matters is to get side tracked by future important work.

I'm working on project A. Meanwhile, I got a call related to project B--a much longer deadline matter. Call over, I ruminate about Project B, perhaps send ideas to my Project B collaborator, etc. etc. etc. Before I know it, I'm way off track from my goal of working on Project A, which is due very soon.

The First Entry Shmuel

Hi,

My real life name is Shmuel, I am a man-26 and I live in Israel and am a terrible procrastinator. In addition I have ADHD, and am suffering from panic attacks and this has caused me much problems in my life.

I want to go to University next year to study drawing, writing and animation and bring the world of Fantasy and Creativity that lives in my head out-make it a reality and one in which I can support myself financialy.

To do this I have to stay on task, and I think Procrastinators Anonymous can help me with that goal.

how do you break the cycle?

I have a bit of a cycle, where if I don't want to do something, I tend to "take a break" i.e. procrastinate, instead of just doing it and getting it started.  How do you guys recommend breaking the link between "i don't want to do this" and "take a break"?

CNN article

Forgive me if someone already posted this but CNN published this nice article about procrastination last month.  There is also a website discussed in the article that might be useful to those of us who need to "externalize" personal goals.

sick and tired of being sick and tired

hello and thank you for being here!

well just wanted to say a quick hello -

Iam soooooo happy to have found this website and it is amazing to know I am not the only one who can't 'just get on with it'. i am amazed at how much insight i have already gained from peoples comments on here.

this is the first step, isn't it...

it is 1130 pm Sat night, Jan10, 2009

Can yo believe, I am procrastinating going to bed?  Course, I have to finish my glass of wine....

I sit here, and look aroung at my messy living room, and think of my dirty kitchen, and all the laundry to be done....

my husband angry because dinner was late because I was on this stupid thing for too long...the kids asking me for clean underwear and pants (which is folded and sitting in laundry baskets in my room)

Question about Affirmations

Do any of you use affirmations?   If so, can you describe how you use them?  I've tried several times to use them, I believe that there really is something to the power of positive thinking.   BUT, it seems that I have so many faults that I want to make an affirmation about each one, the list gets too long and too hard to remember, and doggone it, I just feel silly.

Any advice or discussion would be much appreciated!

Jo
