Introductions and Procrastination Discussion

If you're just joining, please introduce yourself here. This is also the section for general discussion about procrastination topics - articles you've read, questions, thoughts, insights, etc.

A change in the way I feel

I'm posting this for two reasons:

1) To inspire and motivate those of you who are just beginning to address procrastination (I started seriously in January, and had been working my way up towards it for about a year or two before that);

2) To remind myself of this in case things go all pear-shaped again. I've recognised a pattern of procrastination/anticrastination in me - fortunately the procrastination phases are getting shorter and the anticrastination phases are getting longer. So if Future-Norm is reading this - REMEMBER WHAT THIS IS LIKE! You can make it happen again, Norm!

Reinforcing procrastination

I just posted a reply to Pro's bookending and it prompted this insight. We aren't doing ourselves any favours. We are constantly reinforcing our behaviour by rewarding it.

We reward ourselves for procrastinating. Pro was using TV as an excuse not to do something, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS BEING RECORDED! Pro, not meaning to single you out but I'm sure everyone does it :)

So, Pro was getting rewarded for procrastinating. And so what happens? Pro's first instinct next time will be to procrastinate because there is a payoff.

We need to change this behaviour pattern. We need to re-train ourselves to only play after work, and not play to get out of work.

Newbie with a question....

Hi all,

Might I say I love this website! I feel at home :)

My procrastination has plagued me all my life. Here's the punch at the end of a long story. I am a PROFESSIONAL ORGANISER! :jawdrop: Yes! So we are human after all...!

My procrastination manifests itself in an inability to complete things. I am okay starting things (and often do with gusto!). I am not a fan of the ADD tag, but I will say that I present with all the symptoms of adult ADD. I won't label myself that because I don't beleive in it as a disorder (no offense to those who do, it's just a belief of mine, I could be wrong!) just as a personality type.

Hi and Getting Things Done (GTD) question

Never posted here before... maybe it's just another way for me to procrastinate. ;) Then again, maybe some folks with experience can help me. Found my way here via the procrasination book on wikipedia and was looking at the article on time bingeing and thought it fit me to a great extent. Actually, for me I think the issue is a combination of procrastination and escapism... they always seem to go together for me. It's a chicken/egg scenario. I might try the bookending thing too... I kind of do that myself sometimes but with no audience, there is no sense of accountability.

Now too, I was wondering whether any of you had any thoughts on the GTD book. I read it 6+ months ago and was following many of his suggestions but fell off the wagon after 2-3 months. The thing is, I was accomplishing more but I constantly felt like even though I was doing more, I was also constantly stressing about the things that weren't getting done. I also felt like I was getting lots of little items checked off at the expense of the big picture. It got to the point that I almost refuse to look at my PDA because it makes me sick to see all 3 million things I need to do in one place. :barf: I couldn't really concentrate on where I was or what I was doing because there were so many other things I felt like I should ALSO be doing.

Schoolwork Solutions

Does anyone want to contribute to a list of SOLUTIONS that have worked for you to not procrastinate on schoolwork?

new and grateful!!!

I'm so glad I found this site! Procrastination is destroying my life. Poor job performance, bad credit, incomplete projects, incomplete home remodel that'we're living in, constant stress and self hate . . . it's terrible, as I'm sure you understand. Maybe there's hope after all. I can't get my self to do much of anything, unless it's really urgent.

Does this group incorporate the 12 steps at all?

Any suggestions on where to start?

Anyway, thanks for being here!

Angie

Can you tell when you're procrastinating?

I don't mean the sort where you suddenly catch yourself and realise you've been at it again. I mean do you sometimes think "I don't know if this is procrastination or if there's another reason why this thing isn't done yet?"

A couple of things recently have brought this up for me, and it was my accounts and tax that sparked it off today. I'm very close to finishing my accounts and tax form for the last financial year (to April 2006).

I'm not quite sure if I've been genuinely too busy to finish them off and submit them - I have certainly been 'busy', but I don't know if I've genuinely been 'too busy'. Or is that just an excuse and I'm doing my usual trick of stopping at 98% of the job done?

Devintownsend Shout Out

Hi devintownsend - thanks for your PM!

Sorry to have to reply publicly, but you're not set for receiving contacts, and anyway a few people have contacted me with similar questions so hopefully this may answer other people's questions too.

So for other people's benefit the question was is there a group of techniques on the site, or did I group them together from what other people have listed.

I was fortunate in that this site was very new when I was looking for such resources on the net. I read all the Articles which is where I got the original ideas, and I tried putting each of them into practice, one at a time. As other ideas came up in other threads (I think there's one somewhere on 'what works for me' or something similar) I added those too.

Flylady; GTD

Does anyone FLY w/the Flylady website?

Does anyone implement GTD (getting things done philosophy by David Allen?

what next?

What caught my attention about this site was the fresh-to-me idea of procrastination as another manifestation of an 'addictive personality'. I'd previously never categorized myself in this vein and it initially shocked me, but upon deeper reflection and considering my other behaviours I realized this may be a truthful correlation.
So now what? I think of myself as an addictive personality, wondering what other behaviours I'm prone to. Then what? Am I really going to find myself in a twelve step program? The stereotypes and cliches running through my head are overwhelming and really are hard to get over, but I must. Is anyone else at this point? Is a procrastinator going to fit in at an AA meeting or other addictive personality group meeting? Now, I guess I'm wondering, in my own independent way, if other procrastinators are or have done some soul searching/twelve-stepping on their own, and what their experience has been. How did you not just put off such a difficult task? What else can this site offer in terms of solutions and insights from others with the same problem- resolved or not? Thanks in advance for the responses.

Old problem, new to site

Because of procrastinating, I have:

Hurt my credit (just didn't get around to those bills although I had the $ to pay them)
Lost friends (I'll call tomorrow...)
Hurt my career (can't find that vital info, too much clutter, don't get around to clearing it out, I can deal with that problem on Monday)
Missed deadlines (plenyatime)
Gained weight (I'll start exercising tomorrow)
Irritated my spouse (when are you going to take care of that...?)

What is the best book, therapy, tape, practice that any of you have found to help with this very real problem?

I live in So Cal, any groups to go to?

New here

I'm new here and so thankful for the site. I need help - procr is taking away my life. I'm a student - for years and years. Any students want to book end? Where should I start?

Why support groups may help procrastinators

I just read this on the Yahoo Group The Now Habit that flexiblefine told us about (I hope no-one minds me quoting from another site). I think it answers part of the reason why I've had so much success in addressing procrastination this year - this is the first time I've actively sought support (via the internet in my case). It also addresses lonliness issues. > Just thought I'd point you in the direction of a rather good Podcast from > "The Cranky Middle Manager Show" featuring a guy called Mark Goulston. > http://cmm.thepodcastnetwork.com/2006/01/08/the-cranky-middle-manager-show-30-ma\

MosheFH are you there?

HI MosheFH
I just now checked the chat box and you had checked out just as I checked in!
Oh well. I looked at the chat logs and it does not appear that many people use it but it would have been fun.\
Welcome to the board.

How procrastination costs you money.

Yesterday I missed a credit card payment by one day. Ding!
they rolled back the late fee but I am sure my interest rate goes up.
Today I got a late notice from the DMV. Because I have not got the registration in for my old clunker that I have procrastinated on selling the fee went from 29 bucks to 89.
I have paid more in registration fees than I will ever get if I sell it.
I sell a homemade product and if I cant get the order out in time I sometimes have to give a discount to make the customer happy.
I procrastinated getting my invoices out and so people are paying me late. My fault and now I may be bouncing my rent check. I have over draft protection but once again I will get dinged.

Anything but what I need to do

I'm wondering if this is even vaguely familiar to anyone else. I've been to psychiatrists and they just say "That's interesting, never heard that one before." And then have no clue.

Essentially I can do almost anything OTHER THAN what I need to do. Even when the tasks are things that I really enjoy and would get a lot of reward for doing it, I'll find something, anything else, to occupy my time. It's gone on since childhood and of late gotten much worse. I present well at work and speak well. No one has noticed that I've done almost no productive work in a VERY long time. I can quickly get together some material and appear knowledgeable for a meeting, am very intelligent, and look successful.

What is time binging

Definition of time binging????
Thanks.

Scheduling just doesn't seem to work for me

I've been a procrastinator all my life. I do know why I do it (mostly perfectionism and not having a scheduled time that I have to work), but it's not helping much. I'm good about the little things, it's the big ones that I keep putting off.

I have 3 big projects this weekend: grade papers, huge, incredibly important work project, and clean. I thought I'd try spending a 1/2 hour on each, then take a break for the 4th half hour. But the problem came when I realized that if I did this, I would *only* get 2 hours of work done on the project if I followed the schedule for 8 hours. If I just worked on the project, I could put in a whole 8 hours.

Top or Bottom of the Hour? Doesn't matter anyway :)

Ok, first check in. I finished all on my first list. Not perfect, but completed. On to my next hour (after I sit for 5 minutes and drink a cup of water and a glass of iced coffee).

See ya at the zoo!
