Site Questions, Problems, and Updates

This is where I will post information about site outages and updates, fixes, new stuff, etc. If you're having technical problems, post them here.

brief outage

Our Web host decided to reboot the database server, knocking the site out for 10 minutes or so. :( We're back up now.

ChatBox "NOFLOOD" problem

I see from last night's logs that people are getting kicked out of the chatbox for "flooding" when they are not flooding. This seems to be a new problem with v1.2. I'm going to check in the phpFreeChat forum for information about this and a possible workaround. Sorry to anyone who's been inconvenienced.

How to avoid timeouts in the chatbox

I've noticed that after I post a certain number of IMs in the chatbox, I don't get timed out. If I log in and just post one or two messages then go idle, I'll get timed out. But if I post a lot of messages and then I'm idle for a while, I don't time out, even after a long time.

Sorry about the timeout inconvenience. It's a problem in the phpFreeChat module itself - not something I can fix.

CHATBOX IS DOWN for a little while

I'm fixing something - or trying to. I ended up breaking it and I need to take it down completely. I'll post another message when it's back up.

Printing Out Comments

I like the printer-friendly format for original posts. But when I use it (mostly for articles like the Time Bingeing one) COmments don't come with it. I sometimes like to print stuff out and put in a reading stack for when I'm not at the computer. Is there a way to print out comments (other than straight from the browser, which tends to squeeze columns very narrow)?

board for 12-step discussion

I edited the descriptions in the 12-step section of the forum to clarify that one of the boards is for discussion of the steps. That wasn't explicit before. The forum structure hasn't changed - just the descriptions.

chatbox problems

i can't get it to run today... Have reloaded the page 3x.

What to do when you get the urge to procrastinate...

I found this here: http://theserooms.blogspot.com/2005/03/what-to-do-when-urge-to-drink-hits.html

It is written in terms of the urge to drink, and getting drunk, but i can easily replace
urge to drink -> urge to procrastinate
coming off a drunk -> the feeling of knowing that i've wasted the last X hours or days.

Someday if i get time, i'll format this better.

This is reported to have been taken from an old AA pamphlet that was scanned and placed on a web page.

do the sidebars float up too high?

I'm using large fonts on my computer (just installed), and the site doesn't look quite right. The sidebars float up too high. Is anybody else seeing this?

MySQL server maintenance with no warning

If you were logged in 5 minutes ago, you may have noticed that the site was replaced by a message about not being able to connect to the MySQL server. Our Web host had to do some "urgent maintenance" (so they told me).

CHATBOX NOW HAS AN "AWAY" BUTTON

I added a button to the chatbox (on the far right, looks like a door) that allows you to set your status as "away". Click the button again and you'll be back.

The purpose is to let people know when you are logged into the chatbox but not at the computer.

This isn't bullet-proof, but it seems to work. Let me know if you encounter problems with it.

The reason you're seeing old content listed as "recent"...

The tool I use to split and merge threads (when moving stuff to the new forums) changes the date stamp, so things I moved appear in the boxes as new content. That will scroll off again soon and new content will again be on top.

NEW FORUM ORGANIZATION - check it out!!!!

We had enough content in the forums that it was getting very hard to find things. I also realized that we had a need for a new type of check-in board for special projects - major, multi-day projects like back tax returns or a thesis. The new board is also a good place for master to-do lists (e.g. a list for the week or the month), New Year's resolutions (that don't get lost), and other things that span more than one day.

I've also added separate forums for online meetings, phone meetings, and face-to-face meetings, and a new forum on therapy and coaching.

IRC?

Is this chat box available via an IRC server?

forum software upgrade

I'm thinking about upgrading the software that runs this site - not only for the chat, but so I can install modules that enhance the forum administration features, which are dreadful. I really want to be able to split and merge threads.

On the other hand, I don't want to break what's already here. For example, the themes in this forum I wrote myself, and I don't know if the format breaks with an upgrade. I'm looking into all this.

cron jobs

I'm posting this new topic mainly to test the topic notification feature, which I just enabled by enabling the cron job.

The cron job also purging the chatbox logs.

New "resources" section

I added a new "Resources" section to the Web site - one for books, and one for coaching. I hope you like it!

chatbox

Pro, is it feasible to set up the who's online box so that we can see it while we are signed in? I often see people on my way in, but can't tell if they are still their when I am here. It would be helpful in terms of trying to use the chatbox.

For anyone interested, I am trying to make it a habit to sit in the chatbox while I am posting: if you would like to say hello, see if I am there and say something: I am hoping the monitoring box will poke me to let me know to say hey.

fixed "can't stay logged in bug" - how long was it happening?

Our Web host upgraded the server version of PHP, and this broke Drupal (the piece-of-crap content management system that powers our site - wish I hadn't chosen it). If you tried to log in today (or the last couple days), you would have found that as soon as you switched to a new page, you would be logged off again. This is fixed now.

If you experienced the "can't stay logged in" bug, could you tell me when it started?

Some cannot access this site

Some people have not been able to access this site since Nov 14. I'm working on the problem Sorry!
