Friday 9th November 2012
Between stimulus and response there is a space.
In that space lies our freedom and power to choose our response.
In those choices lie our growth and our happiness.

@clement re: phrasing abstinence
Appreciate what you said:
It's not so much the number of minutes "on plan"
(i. e. not procrastinating) ... but rather ...
"it's the idea i'm phrasing it in a way that implies that could be the last time ever. The past is the past and i set forward from this moment on plan. I intend to never go off. And if i do, i simply reset and try again. For the rest of my life."

Great quote, Jack. Just what I needed to hear today. Just wasted half an hour on the Internet. I'm pretty good most of the day, just when I wake up. Must find another choice in that space, some satisfying substitute (or set Freedom the night before).
Odd day today; here it is:
8:15-8:30 get dressed, etc.
gas station,8:30-9:00
commute
9:00 drs appt
10-11:00 call M; buy lunch; SJC?
11-3 work (notes for N)
3-5 write
5-7 meet B
7-10 dinner, clean, shower, lang, read
The return of the missing Journey
Hey y'all, how you doin'?
I've missed you - I spent a few months with the Zen Habits group but I think I have gotten what I need from there and don't want to pay for it anymore. I will instead increase my donation to PA and come back here.
One thing that I learned at Zen Habits was to work on building one habit at at time, generally 30 days, and track that habit voraciously every day for the 30 days, and give myself a reward for sticking to the habit 90% of the time. I built the habit of daily meditation that way, and worked on building some other habits.
This month I am working on adding more fruits and vegetables to my diet, but I had a bad cold last week, didn't get to the grocery, and lived on peanut butter and whatever my husband felt like bringing home, so I'll refocus on that habit starting tomorrow.
I'm going to use this forum to post my success/failure in the habits I am building and not so much as a todolist, unless I'm really struggling with my work tasks. I've pretty much learned to keep my todo list on paper or in Evernote, although I still struggle with setting too many tasks and then not completing them.
Anyway I am happy to be back, welcome to all the new people, and greetings to my old friends.
Jo

clement ci - day 2 abstinence
i was abstinent ( on plan ) from when i woke up, 8:30 til about 8:50.
It's been 1 minute since i've been off plan.
I'm not shooting for any kind of high number, record, of being on plan. Rather i have formed an intention of living my life entirely on plan.
so...
quiet time
plan tasks
do tasks
9:15.
it's been 2 min since i last went off plan.
so... it's not the "2 min" that's important. it's the idea i'm phrasing it in a way that implies that could be the last time ever. The past is the past and i set forward from this moment on plan. I intend to never go off. And if i do, i simply reset and try again. For the rest of my life.
936am
it's been 24 min since i last went off plan.
"In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"
This helps me as it reinforces the reason i work. Not to accrue accomplishments. But to serve God, my family, my fellow man.
9:43am :
oops, i went off plan. It's been 30 sec since i last went off plan. back 2 it.
10:33 am :
i went off plan for about 4 minutes. i've been on plan for 30 seconds now.
I have 1 MIT. Ok ck wk email for any other hi prio items, then do the 1 MIT.
1:47pm
it's been 2h 14m since i was off plan. my mantra for today is
Stay on plan. Dedicate tasks to God at the start.
I had let down after my meeting. That does not get me off plan. That's just my nature. So i came here to check in. That's the on-plan way to handle my anxiety. Well i guess i could pray too. Maybe i should. Ok i just did.
ok i have a task for 10 min then some other tasks i have to do. fewer choices. easier.
1:53pm :
i was off track for about 10 sec. so start a new clock. i do feel guilty about this one, but it is great awareness how it happens. it's ok. my nature.

EleanorBE's Friday list
Jack that is a fantastic quotation, thanks. I once saw a very moving documentary about kids in a detention centre being taught contemporary dance - and it made a huge difference to their behaviour in the centre and actually brought their re-offending rates down! It was because they were being taught that space, I think, in the discipline of having to prepare themselves momentarily for each movement in dance. Anyway, I find that through being here I am discovering that space too. I find myself thinking 'oh, I'll put that off...' and then I pause and wonder - well what if I just did it now? Or if I decide not to, what if I decide when I wlll do it, and write it dow, rather than just pushing it away? And it really is turning my life around.
So, Friday.
