How to create a Writing Portfolio

This question is mainly directed at Pro, because I think (hopefully correctly) that he's done some work in writing, but anyone else's contributions would be much appreciated as well.

How do you organise your writing clips/portfolio? I've been working as a freelance writer for a while, and I already have my portfolio prepared from a few years before, but it doesn't feel very professional to me. I've tried finding online how-to articles to show me how it's supposed to be arranged, but I haven't been able to find anything.

Anyone knows what to do? It's kind of urgent - I need to send it asap to a prospective employer, and they need it today :(

You may find misc.writing on

You may find misc.writing on USENET useful, probably.

Thanks, doitnow

Will check it out.

freelance writing

While it's true that I'm a writer, I don't have advice to give you in this area. I wrote for one publication for a long time, and I didn't have to do much in the way of convincing. The knew my work and they hired me. I probably should have done more pitching than I did. You might want to pick up a copy of "The Writer's Market". That has very good information on how to pitch articles. It comes out every year.

Oh I don't need help with

Oh I don't need help with the pitching :) It's not a magazine that I'm trying to get work with, but a multinational that's looking for people who can write press releases and web content and such. I already got one foot in the door this morning during my interview, but I offered to send them my portfolio to show them a sample of my writing, so now what I'm sending them is a few samples of my best work, but I'm not sure how best to arrange it. But if you've never had to create one, I guess then I'll have to look elsewhere for advice :-/
Thanks anyway, Pro :)

Actually...

Do you think it would be too much of a bother to check for me? Only if you know someone who's experienced in this sort of thing, of course, and if it doesn't take you out of your way. I'll go with what I have for now, but it wouldn't hurt if any info could be gained for the future. Like I said, no pressure :)

don't know

I don't know anyone who does that kind of work. Sorry.
