clement ci - day 258 attempting abstinence, 178 from self

"self-love" makes me uncomfortable. Sometimes i have had a big ego. And the whole thrust of the New Testament of the Bible, Jesus' teaching, is self-SACRIFICE.

However,

Yesterday, after an off-plan binge, i was feeling extremely guilty and like there was no hope for recovery, it suddenly popped into my head, "how would i treat a good friend who was dealing with exactly my situation?"

Well, i would encourage them. Help them to start from here and look forward. I would not try to excuse or make light of mistakes in the past, but i would try to help them see that they are the past, they are not the future, and they are mistakes, they are not fatal, and there's a very good chance he can overcome them.

That is a form of self-love, or maybe self-care. And that makes sense to me.

Vic's post yesterday "Vic 7/25/13" http://procrastinators-anonymous.org/node/4935#comment-62659 was about self love.

And that, with the divine intervention from yesterday, makes me ready to do it today. So what would i say to a good friend who was going thru exactly what i'm going thru?

I understand how you feel. You're right, most of today is gone. There's nothing we can do about that. But life is not over. It's not the end. You have the rest of today. You have your family coming tonight, that should be fun. There's Saturday. And next week. You're on the path of recovery, and you've made great strides. There is a pattern of more and more recovery here. Yes, today may have been a setback, but if we view that set back in the context of increasing recovery, then the progress you've made over the last year is the big story, and yesterday and this morning are just a blip. This mistake is the exception for your life right now, recovery has become the rule. And that's how you know God is with you, because you are now doing things you could never have done before. And you can trust that he will Guide you in the future.

Wow. i actually feel a whole lot better. amazing.

Abstinence from unplanned time.
  • The one thing, the only thing, i can do impulsively is write something on my todo list.
  • The one thing, the only thing, i can do off plan is recovery, something to maintain my sobriety, when tempted. I have come to believe that it is more important to maintain sobriety than to get things done.

Abstinence from relying on self. AA Big Book says to rely on God. Quoted in my bookmarks : scroll down to "AA Big Book on fears : relying on God not self-reliance:"

  • I have come to believe that it is more important to maintain sobriety of relying on God than to get things done.
    • "15 Points" point 5 says:
      5. Develop and rehearse a daily plan of thinking and acting by which you will live that day relying on God, regardless of what may upset you or how hard the old urge to rely on self may hit you.

      My Plan is this:

      1. read "15 Points"
      2. Meditate for 5 min on the attributes of God

When we retire at night, we constructively review our day (BB).
  • Were we resentful, selfish, dishonest or afraid?
  • Do we owe an apology?
  • Have we kept something to ourselves which should be discussed with another person at once?
  • Were we kind and loving toward all?
  • What could we have done better?
  • Were we thinking of ourselves most of the time?
  • Or, were we thinking of what we could do for others, of what we could pack into the stream of life?

THINGS I AM GRATEFUL FOR (everything i "did well" comes from god, either thru gifts he's given me or the way he's transformed me)

KF check in Friday 26th July 10:30am

Late check in today. I let myself get sucked into non-chargable help for a friend. And I ducked out of running again today. Tut tut.

Had a great training day yesterday which has lead to lots of brain activity and ideas, but getting myself to concentrate on other things is a bit difficult. Will try and re-direct my enthusiasm a little.

Today I have already:

  • Put the washing on
  • had breakfast
  • had a shower
  • put washing on line
  • sent emails to my friend for his new business - work-related but not chargeable (yet ;-) )

Today I will:

  • Smile. I am a good person with intelligence. I just need to be kind with myself when my implementation is not great.
  • Plan for Silver
  • Reply to J
  • Email Silver with instructions for entering sales. JUST MAKE A START spent way too much time on this.
  • Silver Make a list of info/items needed. inc MLR
