It comes from an indomitable will.'

clement ci - day 86 attempting abstinence, 5 from self

Wow, as a Christian, that quote in the thread starter scares me a little. I'm sure most people are thinking about Ghandi, Jesus, Nelson Mandela. But doesnt that also equally describe Hitler, Stalin, Osama? I'm not doubting the quote, but to me it seem only 1/2 the story; the other 1/2 seems to me to be TO WHAT is that will ALIGNED? Goodness? Yes? And who's definition of Goodness? God's? If not, then the only other answer i can see is SELF, and i think that's how the bad guys come about. Anyway...

11:58pm : super bowl party is over, and i'm still an addict and my drugs are procrastination and relying on self.

H.A.L.T. - Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired. If you are any of those, HALT and reconnect w/ your Higher Power. That's what they say in AA. I'm not any of those. I'm not tired, per se, but i am fatigued and feel spiritually worn down. So i'm going to nourish myself (I can tell this is a behavior grafted on to me by God) by

:) read bible
:) pray
:) thanksgiving
:) 15 points for the [person who is addicted to relying on self] to consider when confronted with the urge to [rely on self and not God]
:) bed

12:37am : It's been 2 min since i last went off plan. But i do not rely on myself, so i dont feel guilty and my failure has nothing to do with future success, cuz that depends on God.

"Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the turth with his neighbor, for we are all members of one another." - Ephesians 4:25

This verse is very consistent with AA:

  • "We speak about our own experience..."
  • "We share our own experience, strength and hope."
  • "The opinions you hear are those of the individual who gave them. Take what you like and leave the rest."

1:01am : it's been 25min since i last went off plan. And i just did everything on my list. If this were me 1 year ago, i would look at me today and think that's impossible. But it happened--God did it.

@Clement, re: Gandhi quote

I found the original document that the quote was derived from. I wanted to see the context.

He was saying that there is a moral strength in the integrity of Love ... that cannot be defeated by brute physical strength.

In the same document as that quote, he says:
"the conquest of physical might by spiritual strength".
and
"The dignity of man requires obedience to a higher law -- to the strength of the spirit."
and
"With enlightened forgiveness must come a mighty wave of strength in us"

In a separate document, he said: "Truth (satya) implies love, and firmness (agraha) engenders and therefore serves as a synonym for force. I thus began to call the Indian movement Satyagraha, that is to say, the Force which is born of Truth and Love or non-violence"

And another document ... "I have also called it love-force or soul-force. ... what appears to be truth to the one may appear to be error to the other"

It is interesting that he sees a close connection between "soul", "love", and "truth".

To sum up, the "indomitable will" in the thread-starter quote ... was referring to following a moral integrity based on Love and Truth and Forgiveness. And it's not about judging or condemning others.  It is about experiencing the inner strength of a loving stance.

The strength of the soul.  (as contrasted with the "physical capacity" of militarism).

So as not to distract the forums with off-topic political/religious meanderings, I will email you a link to the original document so that you can read it in context.

P.S. regarding the quote you cited: "Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are all members of one another." - Ephesians 4:25 --

In my opinion, Gandhi would have agreed with that quote .. and also this other quote from Ephesians 4:32 "Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other."

Gotmusikk, your tag line is cool

Hi, and happy Sunday. I like your directive to do the healthy things, not ones that feel shouldy or escapist. I will let that inspire me today.

EleanorBE's Sunday list

Very pleased to read this from Ghandi as I can't seem to shake the last bit of a virus and was beginning to use that as an excuse not to tackle anything. As a result am feeling unwell /and/ anxious instead of just unwell! So from now - lunch time in UK - it's Indomitable Will over Physical Strength!

Basically all I need to do is four short tasks, then plan the next fortnight carefully, because after that I'm going overseas for a week for work and mustn't delude myself that I'll get much research or admin done whilst I'm there. I don't even know if I'll have wifi. Actually must put  that on a list to find out about.

- Write J's reference

- Send ref to J

- Look over C's new plan

- Write to C to comment on plan.

Make soup for lunch
