Choices: by Dr. Stepven R. Covey

I was teaching the 7 Habits at a professional gathering last week when I experienced something remarkable. While I spoke about Habit 1, Be Proactive, and some of the principles for being responsible for your own life or carrying your own weather and choosing your own response, a gentleman from the audience stood up. Right before this big audience, this man stood up on his chair and essentially said the following (I’m paraphrasing):

“Last week my wife left me. It was totally unexpected. I have felt a mixture of feelings from being hurt, feeling anger, betrayal and embarrassment. But listening to this today I have decided to not be angry anymore. I am going to choose to be happy and not be hurt or embarrassed any longer.”

I was so taken by this man’s sense of humility and courage, and his desire to be the creative force of his life rather than being victim to his circumstances or his relationship with his wife. I’m sure he was in a lot of turmoil and feeling like the world had crashed down on him. But he gained the self-awareness that he could still choose his response to his devastating personal challenges. He saw that he could act and not feel acted upon.

I commended him for his decision and affirmed that he can choose to let the anger go, to forgive and create his life. This is often a hard thing to do especially in painful situations like his.  The audience applauded him. I applauded him. I had never seen anything like it.

When I think of this man, I don’t know what will happen to him and his wife. But I do know that if he will grasp onto the principle of being proactive and seeing himself as the creative force of his own life with the choices he makes, he will find meaning and fulfillment in his life—he will eventually find peace of conscience.

Can you think of a situation or relationship in your life where you can choose a better, more effective response? Choose it now!

Thanks Vic for starting the thread and reminding me that I am in charge of my own life.

Late today checking in but have already done:

  • answered 4 short emails
  • half hour bike ride
  • talk with son re car

Still don't know if these were procrastination for paid work which is a high priority, but still they needed to be done.

Goals for today:

  • 4 hour + billable work Smile Smile Smile Smile Smile - I am going to put up smileys for each 1/2 hour (thanks for that idea tracy-la)
  • be ready for trip tomorrow without working after 9 pm
  • make phone calls x 2 :)
  • appointment 1 pm :)

Some of this really didn't work out so well. I did not meet my goal - disappointing - and I am not going on my trip tomorrow because I am not ready.

I hope I can move on tomorrow - I know I am doing a lot better since I started posting here but sometimes it just doesn't seem enough. Change takes time I guess.

myy day 9

Tired. Didn't sleep well and had to get up early for an appointment.

Done:
- met my billable work quota (||)
- sent an email about a bill. Usually I would have ignored this task for as long as possible. I deserve a nice cup of tea for this :)
- took care of my home by doing chores

tracy-la tuesday morning

Good morning,

 Checking in / Showing up.

Have to run out the door so I'll write more later.

Affirmations today: I love being productive. I can finish anything I begin. I am becoming more productive every day.  I always finish what I start.  As I get ready for work today (or any project), I let go of feeling I need or want to do anything else.

Going to use Smile for every 1/2 hour I do on a project:

1. Son's schoolwork and related kid issues: SmileSmileSmile [need to count this since I always act like it doesn't count]

2. Things to do today:

Office admin matters (ordering new Blackberry, emails, etc.] - SmileSmile

Project G Smile [almost finished - waiting answer];

Project P  11:00 -  Smile [finished - waiting for response]

Project H - 11;30 - 12 pm Smile [finished - waiting for signatures]

Project M - delegated and reviewed documents. Smile

Project C - I promised to do this as a favor. need to learn to say no but need to do it. Promised it yesterday - and only deadline is my promise. So gotta get it done. SmileSmileSmile DONE. Next time I shouldn't say yes so quickly.

Project S - make call. did it. - not 1/2 hour project (yet). Sent email relaying contents of call. Smile

Small matters; Project M (done); Project K - Done; Project P - Done  Project P2 - got assignment; still need to do. Smile

Journey 10 am

Wow Great starter Vic!

I got up at 5:30 (good) and was at the gym at 6:45 (bad!) but I made up some time at the gym.  Gym was pretty empty this morning and I went right through my routine without dawdling or flirting between sets.  So I did make it to work on time after all, but it was close.  I can't seem to make any progress on getting up/ getting to the gym earlier.  I think I'm going to abandon this goal until December after my big project is complete and I'm no longer working every fricking weekend!

I have a stressful meeting at 10:30 for my top project, then I need to prepare for another important meeting tomorrow about same project.   After lunch I will do some little stuff, then work on my 2nd priority project.   Sounds like a plan!

*Lots more things actually but don't want to overwhelm myself. I keep putting off contacting people for fear of uncomfortableness.
*"Came out" (for lack of a better phrase) to another friend about what's been going on. Was really really scared to. But I did it.
*FINALLY done with notes. yessssss
*Good news is I cleaned out the trunk though its eleven at night here. It's done. But it was painful. Lots of old stuff and old memories. Hence why some stuff is extra hard to get done.

Just an odd question but

Just an odd question but how do you cross things off on your list?? I can't find the key and crossing things off always makes  me feel so goTongue out

How to cross off lists

findingaway

Make sure you are in the view with the icons displayed, not the html view. Sometimes I need to click below on 'disable rich-text' to change the view.

Select the text you wish to cross out. Then click on the ABC icon on the top line, 4th from the left, next to the underline option.

Hope that helps!

PS Welcome! Good to have you here!

I'm just showing up this morning and asking HP to guide my path.  Need to focus on sorting through pile of tasks to choose what 'needs' to be done today.

May I choose to dare today...

Show up (done) Ask God to direct my thinking, especially asking that it be divorced from self-pity , dishonest or self-seeking motives.

I have been up for 3 hours and did not get much done. So it is going to be hard but I will choose to not beat myself up, one minute at a time and use more recovery tools in my tool box.

Thanks for being here. May we all find the wisdom , courage  and most of all the gracefor the willingness to "Keep On" today. It is not "automatic"
