We've all heard the Woody Allen quote: "Eighty percent of success is showing up."

Last week I got third place in a 5,000-meter race. That's the only time I've ever won an award for running. The second-place finisher in my age group was nearly five minutes ahead of me. But there were only three men in my age group. Hence, third place went to me.

That award sits on my mantle to remind me that sometimes just showing up is all it takes. (Of course, I did have to finish the race. I guess that was the other 20 percent.)

Today, I'm going to show up. Hope you can too.

Ian's list and daily renewal, 11.1

Late check-in today, courtesy of about 1.25 hours of procrastination on saying, "Today, I will have a program and I will show up for it as best I can." (Scribbler — congrats on your race, and I agree w you re showing up. I actually think the percentage is much higher, at least in terms of what human effort I can bring to making the day a success. I think about 98% of my job is to show up and simply do the next right thing.

I feel physically tired; had a few beers last night and didn't go to bed quite early enough. That's an ongoing problem for me, and if I'm not showing up I'll usually drop my kids at school and then go back to bed for an hour or two, then feel ashamed about that and lie about it to my wife. Today I'm going to take a 20 minute catnap, no longer, and then go back to work.

Feeling grateful for
  • my children;
  • my long-exasperated wife, who for no reason I can account for is still here;
  • this morning's news that, despite all the craziness and broken promises I've demonstrated so far, my new client has decided to ask me to do more work for them.
  • the fact that although I have this disease (an addictive personality, obsessive/compulsive behavior, an underlying "hole in my sole"), I have professional talent and I do good work.

Here's my list:

WORK
- client #1: prototype of by-topic analytics
- client #1: weekly analytics report
- client #1: daily report
- client #1: invoice
- client #2: timeline revisions
RECOVERY
- prayer
- daily renewal
- meditation
- journaling
- call 1
- call 2
- call 3
- exercise
- meeting
- 1 hour stepwork
- readings
ERRANDS
- CALL RE MEDICINE

today:

  • post/email meeting notes - DONE
  • deposit checks
  • call about ins.
  • draft TM info

I think that's all I'll have time for today.  better get to it!

wishing everyone a day of progress...

Journey 9:45 &

ugh Monday!   I had an "octoberfest" lunch yesterday - it was sort of my Thanksgiving dinner because I'll be working every weekend in November so this is my last chance to have everyone over.  This was actually my daughter's idea.   It was fun, but now I am tired and don't wanna work!

Getting coffee and making todo list, back later!

UPDATE 11:45 Have todo list, will travel.  I have two critical things that must get done this week, and unfortunately one of them is something I don't have a lot of control over - I will have to do that "managing up" thing.   This is the part of project management that I hate - being responsible for stuff that I don't have authority over. But, I want to grow in my career, so I guess I'll suck it up - this stuff comes with the territory.   Off to Toastmasters now, see you later.

UPDATE 1:30 back from toastmasters and took a 30 minute lunch break.   I *really* don't feel like doing any work.  But, not working is not an option, so I will prepare for my 2pm meeting and then if I have time left I will prepare the environment to work on my 2nd priorityproject.

2pm meeting was stressful, we have some issues.  Did my budget for November (on work time!) and now working on my 2nd priority project for the rest of the work day.
