Just in from work and trying to get some stuff done, but not sure where to start- I am going to try to focus on priorities during 10 15 min sessions today. I will check in after 5.
J and I drove 3 hrs to his dr appt this morning and he had a mini crisis (all ok now)- but now he can't drive home and I was planning to work in the car. :-( I have a major work deadline at 0430. What to do, what to do?
I think that praying the Steps, Serenity Prayer and AA's Step 11 prayer most days diligently, pays deposits against days like this. Even though I failed to pray as we dashed into this day, I got help when I ran into that awful procrastination-prone wall of fearful indecision. It occurred to me that we usually stay overnight at a lovely hotel with great staff, who perhaps would let us "camp" in the lobby until I get past this deadline even though we are not staying overnight with them this time.
It was scary to ask (J wouldn't even come in until after I asked lol!) but they were delighted to be helpful, and so here we are! I am just posting this now to share the experience, strength and hope, and now I am off to work on the project due in 1 hour! Blessings to all. Thanks for sharing the journey into recovery with me today.
So far I've set up practice prelim, had prayer time and gone to mtg.
Now I need to have lunch, send a couple emails do some last minute studying for practice prelim, and give practice prelim 2-3:30ish. Afterwards I'll take notes on what went well and badly, make a study plan, clean up bench, set up expt and return libary books. This evening I'll do some more studying, following my plan.
Had a good laugh yesterday while I sat at the pool watching the kids play. I had found on the web some worksheets used for OA and thought I'd revise them for PA. I did this back in March 2010.
One was a worksheet called "The ABCs" A = Abstinence (where you write out your abstinence),
B = the plan (write out the plan or powerful took to aid you in attaining your goal of sustaining abstinence for life) and C =
Compulsive (honest appraisal of trigger procrastination behaviors that lead you to "pitiful and incomprehensible demoralization."
So I read it all over and what I wrote. I also reread what the abstinence was to be. It said "an abstinence that you can sustain throughout your life with all life's challenges until the day you die. Make it livable, attainable and sustainable, i.e., something you are able to commit to now.
What did I write back in March 2010? Something I couldn't stick to for a week. It had such thinks in there like "get to work by 6:30 am every day"; "stick to my daily schedule"; "no chatting at work for more than 5 minutes"; not spending more than 30 minutes a day on the internet/TV/personal emails/writing my blog (combined). Oh and more that I won't go into.
My perfectionism, my wanting to be very productive all the time, my other need to control my day -- all are refective in that.
Still working on an A that I can do every day till I die whether I am sick, my kids are sick, whether I am stuck in an airport for a day or on a soccer field all day for a kid tournament or stuck in some work meeting that goes 3 hours longer than expected.
I redid "A". 1. It is now "use electronics moderately" - email, Internet, TV, etc." [old brain says NO internet for 30 days - not realistic since I need it to work :)]
2. plan to plan daily - even if for 1 minute. {This doesn't mean writing the plan -- which I may not get to, just planning to plan as I think I could do that every day no matter what. The plan can be a tool but I know it will need to be flexible and I will also want to build in as many routines as I can since that helps me but those are tools for me and not Abstinence.]
3. look at my calendar every day - even if for 1 minute.
4. thank the universe every day for being alive and be grateful for my life even when I don't feel it. [luckily I am a pretty positive person except when it comes to critiquing all my shortcomings]
thanks Edge for the inspiring starter! i had a couple of good days lately. there are a lot of things i'd like to do today and time is short so checking in to get organised.
