Yay! We've made it through half of the week in one piece! It's all easy downhills from here!

MD - Explaining old news

Well folks, after a decent Monday and first e-check-in, things got predictably unravelled last 36 hrs, but then again they did not (urgent medical appts and ensuing priorities)

So despite this posting being "old news" and easily dragging me down ("oh I have to iron out those old tasks," in this case, "old" being a wed 23rd post), I feel weirdly COMPELLED to explain myself re: last 36 hours.

MUST DO AND I DID: -- get son's fractured arm in cast, arrange follow-up, explain reasons to him on missing some fun thing, take him out of school for a while for a special treat since he's so dejected, and figure out game plan to tape the cast and have some fun rest of this wk.....I could count these as separate or as big-lump-sum (and I know THAT does not matter.....as long as it was done....WOW....that pleasant realization is suspiciously weird to me)

MUST DO AND I DID:  -- convey and summarize a necessary self-medical history that was not easy....

MUST DO: but DID NOT (1) those darned bills.....and wouldn't you know it, last night the electrical power went out for 4 hours in neighborhood, so I actually had A LEGIT REASON in not being able to do call in OR check-in OR billsso as to do candles/air-conditioner checks/etc .......and THAT put me in unproductive spin (2) order tires (3) get email files for job hunt prepped (4) do dishes (wife picked up the slack....as always)  (5) follow-up with realtor (6) settle laundry/clothes (7) sleep at reasonable time

WHAT I DID - NICE BUT NOT VITAL (1) healthy email language banter with colleague & new friend on our organization & issues of the day and humor (2) attend an appreciation luncheon (for me and others) to recap school year and my/our contributions (3) wrap up some later-in-the-week-due tasks to not make next 48 hours so pressured (even though no logical reason they should be...BUT they are) (4) follow up to  organizing a support group meeting (scheduling has been a challenge) as it might impact this week/weekend (5) reshuffle dental appts for kiddos this wk and (6) initial thoughts for summertime move

WHAT I DID NOT AND RIGHTLY IGNORED: (1) gym/pool class since just could not get there (2) sweeping floor (3) detailed job hunt plan (4) writing down medical history to help articulate it

So I was productive but frankly it did not feel that way since much was ad-hoc!... I can't figure that out. (In the past, I would have been gloating over myself.)

Trying to find my way (in multiple senses of the word)

For the last couple of days I have been trying the "Pomodoro Method," which someone mentioned somewhere on this site.  It is definitely helping me to get something done, though my 5-minute breaks keep turning into - well, longer ones.

It's already late afternoon, and I *have* to make more headway before knocking off for the day.  I would like to FINISH (the hardest part of any project for me; much harder than starting) the following things, which I have already spent WAY too much time on (partly because leaving things in the middle and coming back to them results in the need to re-read/do the same work over and over again):

  1. Grading JW's final
  2. Writing JW's eval
  3. Re-reading JS's work (for the thousandth time)
  4. Writing JS's eval

I'm going to resist the temptation to list all of the tasks for the rest of the group: they are not doable (before I go to bed tonight); these are.  I can do these four things.  Starting...NOW!

I really should either transfer my to-do list to paper or try to read this page more often. Hopefully I don't regret the fail of today.

Scribbler feeling old

Hey now watch it, I'm two years older than you!  We can't be feeling old yet!  :D  But it's very true that I also feel the need to savor every moment.  My mom always said 'Don't wish your life away.'

Agnus checking in- and out

Good morning! Thanks  for yet another smile-making thread-starter, Goal_Allegro! There used to be a morning radio show here where every Wednesday morning, the woman deejay answered a door knock and was promptly attacked by The Hump, very funny theatre-of-the-mind.

I've been absent more than present here on PA for awhile and my problems are mounting up and becoming "astonishingly difficult to solve" (Alcoholics Anonymous, The Doctor's Opinion).  I was doing alright for awhile but then started the wild swing between bingeing and slacking.  So I will, with God's help, resume PA recovery today. Here is my plan du jour:

  • Call db
  • Call kr
  • edit ppt
  • resolve ppt upload
  • primer progress made, more to go
  • 1pm lunch
  • :15 minutes on personal backlog
  • 2 pm resume work
  • file overdue May rept
  • genbrg
  • software promo, wrap
  • 4:30 shop for class
  • 5:30 sewing class
  • 7:30 dinner and clean kitchen
  • 8:30 chill
  • 9:30 prep for bed
  • 10pm bed

I did not procrastinate today, thank God...but I also had more work than it is possible to do in one day, and I took a much-needed nap mid-afternoon. Then more work came in at 4pm that must be done by tomorrow afternoon, so there went my sewing class. I am disappointed, but this rush of busy-ness won't last forever.I'm focusing on gratitude that I AM busy, makes up for the huge debt-inducing slack time I suffered through the winter and spring. g'night!

kromer 9:05 CI

Yesterday was a bad day, I'll try to make today better.

I have a mtg 4-4:30ish and a seminar 11:10-2ish. And I want  to go dancing tonight at 10.

Other tasks I want to get done:
*Genotyping (startedabout 2 hrs hands on work, with some incubation time in between)
*Go over old research
*Clean slides (45 min)
*Finish text part of conf report (2 hrs)

Step by step for this:
*1)Write up devel stuff
*2)Diagram of pathway
*3)Write up expt. stuff
*4)Non-genomic action, action of non-RA, now many primary targets? (working on this for a few minutes now)
*5)Acting ind of ligand
*6)Cell/tissue/dose specific

If I have more time, I'll work on my quals proposal for an hour or so.

Journey 8:30

Still recovering from my little illness (I had pneumonia), I go back to the doc at 3:00 for a recheck so I'm going to work from home until then, and after the doc, nada.    I'm not feeling well today, so I think I might have overdone it a bit yesterday although I didn't get much done.  Oh, well, these things happen and the good thing is I don't feel doubly behind because I know I've been working hard and not procrastinating (much).  When you've been procrastinating on getting your work done and then an illness or accident puts you farther behind it's very stressful.   I was planning to head back into the office tomorrow but I think I'll milk it a bit longer and tell them I need to work from home tomorrow and maybe even Friday.  So, today's list:

  • Get cleaned up and dressed in 'work from home' clothes - ~30 minutes
  • Continue working on outstanding Project V Problem ~2-3 hours
  • Project V - Procedures C1 and C2 - work on outline - ~ 1 hour
  • Project Z - verify PM access and look for examples - ~ 1 hour
  • Team meeting - ~ 1 hour
  • Doc - ~2 hours
  • pick up something for dinner
  • dishes - ~ 1 hour
  • chill on the couch until bedtime (man I'm getting sick of TV!) ~ 3 hours?

hope4meandu checkin 8:18AM

Hi fellows,

Last night was a bust, because me and Yoffee ran into people and dog friends and there the night went. Guests are coming Saturday, so it's going to be a crazy Thursday and Friday, as usual, cleaning & cooking at the last minute and killing myself. No cleaning tonight, as I'm in the City.

Anyway, thank you Goal Allegro for the starters and thank you ndb (Nicole) for your help at the beginning of the week, it's changed the way I do things using the egg timer. Also, I was feeling kind of lost on this site, feeling hated (which is my past, but still my present some times) and there you were Nicole, so you helped in more ways then you can know.

List:
-order Yofee nail clippers & toothpaste (Friday)
-getting info on call woman re: $
-order meds (Friday)
-call women re: job
-call Vermont Dr. and see if he'll prescribe Yoffee's antibiotics
-pick up her meds from the City?

♥Prayers & guidance needed & appreciated for my Yoffee's healing.

Thank You for sharing your sucess- your joy is our joy, this program is amazing!!Vic

Congrats on thesis

That's got to be a weight off. My ex-wife, a person of iron spine and mind-melting productivty, never finished her thesis, which suggests to me that getting one done is a serious puzzle indeed. You da man! Scribbler

Big Hooray for Tuffl!

Tuffl,

congratulations! My dissertation process was the most painful time of my life I think and it was such a relief to be through.  Be proud that you stuck it out and FINISHED!!!

But, no, it definitely doesn't mean that procrastination is finished as well. From what I can tell so far from my journey and observing other's journeys it will be a continual battle, though it might become easier over time to resist.  But, you've already started some great habits that will move you along that continuum.

So excited for you and wish you all the best on your job search!

Congrats tuffl!

That's a huge accomplishment! Congrats :)

wow tuffl that's GREAT!

Finish cleaning and clearing in kitchen and throw some stuff out
Look up legal info on the web as I think I've thrown out the leaflet

Okay, let's try again. Monday was quite productive, yesterday was horrible (partly due to the fact that I had to travel 4 hours to a not very productive 2-hour meeting), so today should be better.

My todo-list is rather long, so I'm not posting it here, but I'll update on my progress during the day, just like I did on Monday.

Woe to the Pendulum of Extremes!

Sigh... I'm half way through this rainy Wednesday and I've wasted half the day just randomly surfing the net and catching up on discount promotions. In other words, recharging behaviour. Such a far cry from the productive day I had yesterday :(

I think I'm discouraged from my missed opportunities and just a bit physically and mentally tired from the day before.

Thanks Moving for reminding me re-focus on my balance, in more ways than one!

I want to find a more sustainable "happy pace". I guess the only way to learn it is to live it!
