i have joy today.

got stalled in task at work, but easily came here to refresh. But the longer i'm at this the more it seems like it was my attitude that allowed me to come here to get refreshed, when at other times, i dont have such a hopeful attitude. So thanks to god for my + attitude today :D

Checking In at 8:50 am

Last night pushed to get chores done by 2:30 am and then managed to not get to bed till 4am - tend to slow down at the end and sitting down on computer is just asking to doze off.

As usual, I compromised between catching up on sleep and getting up early. The gardeners come by first thing Tuesday mornings and I force myself to get up before they start. That actually works out since I have a regular Monday evening meeting - it makes me get back on schedule after the late evening.

Some important work issues today, so I need to move fast to finish handling essential home chores and get out the door.

I've also got a big slate of personal tasks - a couple are time sensitive and will need immediate attention. As for the others, it's been over 2 months since I've updated my organizer and I need to sit down and reconstitute my 2do list from the pile of sticky notes that have accumulated like so many weeds in my mental garden. :-) I'm hoping that when I get that list together there aren't too many uh-ohs over badly overdue tasks.

Update 7:00 pm

"Essential Home Chores" ran late as usual. Keeping those on a reasonable schedule is a major issue (may post on this later).

So as usual, was late to office.
My main issue today was an important meeting with my boss which I'd been dreading.
Good news is that I spent a few minutes beforehand making notes on points I wanted to raise and it really helped.
For PA purposes I should note that at one point during this meeting my boss - who normally keeps his frustrations to himself - spoke up with entirely valid complaints about my schedule and my productivity. I'm aware that this is only part of the ways my procrastination has hurt everyone around me. Moving beyond regret and finding ways to make amends is a serious issue (and I note it's part of the 12-step program) but the answer necessarily lies in the future - amending my behavior and using the past to learn from, not as a place to get mired in regret.

Now that I've said all that, I also note that I've been looking over the site guidelines on bookending and it looks like I'm guilty of being too chatty in the daily check-in threads, and too vague about what tasks I'm bookending. The chattiness here is because I seem to be hesitant to starting new general topic discussion threads. The lack of task specificity is partly because I'm leery about making yet another set of lists (my hodgepodge of to-do collecting points is yet another topic); and also partly because I have trouble identifying the real Most Urgent/Important Tasks (MIT,MUT) - what I actually have to spend time on - until they are there in front of me (or lodged in my brain) demanding to be ignored no more.

If I'm honest with myself, I usually know at the start of the day
(1) what I jolly well better get done (MUT!), and
(2) what I'll work on if I know what's good for me (MIT!).
That's a longer way of saying "Urgent" and "Important" but it helps me form the mental image, and pick which tasks I'm really going to address TODAY from my overflowing task list. Those few are the ones to address in the daily CI.

So in the interest of making this a real CI and not just another long essay, here's my earlier list (expanded slightly) in actual list format, with current status:

MUTs:
- Morning chores - DONE
- Work: Meeting with Boss - DONE
- Personal: Webpage Update - PENDING (urgent due to time-sensitive content)
- Evening Chores - REQUIRED tonite

MITs:
- Data Analysis on Project #1 - PENDING (one of my tough-to-get started jobs)
- Planning for Project #2 - PENDING (the other toughie)
- Update Tasklist - PENDING

Right now this is still a bit broad. Still grappling with how to express daily tasks in bite-size chunks.

Update 4:00 am Wed

Got through Evening Chores + dinner and fell asleep at my computer.
Definitely need to get my schedule turned around to some sort of normalcy.

For now, a few hours sleep in my actual bed and then tackle Wednesday's goals.

Well, it has not been a very good couple of days on the procrastination front. Surfing the internet, and not doing much else--except beat myself up! My wife says that I attach a lot of emotion to just doing simple things. I think that she is right.

Journey 9 am &

Good morning!  working from home today, I've been to the gym, stopped by the grocery store and dropped off car for inspection, oil change, and to figure out why the !@#$% check engine light is on.   My bday is Monday so I need to get my tags asap!   This is another thing I always put off to the last minute like taxes, grrr.

I feel like I'm coming down with a cold too, so I'm taking Airborne and hoping for the best.   I don't get sick much so I can't really complain (much!)  but it's really annoying to have a cold.   The good news is that when I stopped by the drug store they had a vibrating lumbar support pillow on sale for 9 bucks and it's awesome.  

I'm going to change clothes now and make my todo list for the day.  Well, first I will send a reminder about a meeting this afternoon and THEN I'll change and make my todo list for the rest of the day.  I feel a bit goofy today . . .

UPDATE 10:30 meeting agenda sent but then found out meeting had to be reschedule.  It's scheduled for Friday.  I'm actually off on Friday but I said I'd still run the meeting, it's only an hour and the boss said he'd be doing most of the talking so it's not a big deal.   I figure I'll use up the hour dealing with car stuff today and tomorrow anyway.   OK, NOW I'm changing and making todo list for the rest of the day.

UPDATE 11:30 how did it get to be so late and I still haven't made my todo list lol!  somethign came up about Project T and also had a couple phone calls, so I've been working, but the day is getting away from me . . . taking quiet time now and then planning the rest of the day or what's left of the day!

Journey 4 pm

Got a little frustrated because I couldn't work on the stuff I planned to do, because of a technical issue.   I was able to recover after not too much wasted time, and made some notes about exactly what I'm planning to do when I can get back on the server.   I'm now switching gears to another project.  This one is just starting up and it's hard to figure out exactly what needs to be done, this is a difficult time for me and I often fall off the procrastination wagon on this part of a project.   I did the easy stuff, scheduled a meeting, and sent some emails.   Now I need to dig into my part of the technical stuff.   I know it will be fun once I get past this initial stage of not knowing what to do, and having to ask for help/opinions.   I just gotta tough it out.  

I'm going now to research some system prep that will need to be done . . .I'll go back to meeting notes and online documentation, review what we know and figure out where to look for more info.  There.  that won't be so bad, will it?  Here goes.  I'll do this for an hour then take a break.

lol my car from the late 80s just failed inspection. i was 6 mo late for the inspection, and have 1 month to get it fixed, and now that has expired. I am trying to imagine what i would say to the police officer if i got pulled over.

Overdue anything - The Procrastination Tax

Oh, the Motor Vehicle authorities (and other taxation, as well as commercial accounts) are very understanding about procrastination. That's why they have that elaborate late fee structure all worked out (and in many places, printed right on your bill for you!). They almost certainly have very reliable statistics about how many people are how late and have those numbers worked right into their department budgets.

Looking at it as glass-half-full there are "benefits" for everyone:
- Increases revenue to the payee
- Gives the payer a reason not to procrastinate

The goal for us as procrastinators is to use this incentive and not fall into (or, to get out of) the demographic paying this "procrastination tax." That can be easier said than done (I know this is a serious issue for many of us and certainly do not mean to make light of it), but that's the goal.

I realized showing up here is always my first step of asking for help from the universe. Reading a book, Ask and It Is Given, same ole same ole with a different spin. I am grateful that I can come here and it is so reliable to do every day. I know my thinking needs to change, but it is never automatic. Soooooooooo here I am again. I will start by asking for the willingness to be willing. Thanks for being here.

Lucky CI

Rotten day at work, too much to do to meet a big deadline today, took an overlong lunch break when I should have taken a short one, and now feel awful. I'm noticing that I stop breathing a lot. It's not hyperventilating, I just keep realising that I haven't breathed in the past few seconds and I'm running out of air. Should go outside for a few minutes to break my mental state, but don't feel able to justify taking another minute off work, so continue to sit here and procrastinate.

Having read that, I think I will go outside.. see, this is where PA is helpful :)
