weird day. productive. but unpleasant. thanks to this forum i was able to force myself to do a lot of things i think i would normally have procrastinated about. But it seems the result is that i feel like i had to spend all day forcing myself to do things i didnt like. Ironic, huh? And i am left with emotional drain, not a sense of accomplishment.
anyone else ever feel this way? This may have been the first day i've ever had this much success fighting those avoidance impuses, so this might be new ground for me. which i guess is a good thing? It doesnt feel that good.
I have to do my status report. It's been a good week according to the measurment i'll be reporting, and i think normally i'd be looking forward to it, altho usually i put it off til midnight or 1am. Now it's 10pm, and i'm getting to it pretty much when i planned, but i'm much less happy about it. There it is again. What is this?
You have reserves of willpower, it might have been kind of draining - but think of it like exercise, it'll get easier in time. This is the aches and pains of new muscles.
Have some food (get your blood sugar up), get some sleep, watch something funny, and most of all, feel proud of your accomplishments!
So "it just so happens" that his theory perfectly aligns with my experience. It's as if i read his article and then wrote my post. I exercised more self-control than i have in months, and i'm exhausted--just as if i had run more miles than i'm used to, i'd be exhausted.
The idea of training ones self control as one trains muscies is...well, fascinating.
In my spiritual thought life, i tend to tie self-control up into following the HP, idea being, one must have self-control to deny oneself and follow HP. How does this new science inform that spiritual phenomena? Fascinating.
do i have enuf self-control muscle left to not jump into working these ideas thru? I guess i'm tired enuf that i just want to get back to my status report and finish it, watch TV w/ my SO, have my quiet time, and get some delicious sleep.
I'm checking in to keep a promise to myself. I need to get an annoying insurance thing taken care of. Because it has no external deadline, it's easy to put off forever -- which is bad, because I could be getting reimbursed for a substantial amount of money.
So I'm creating and committing to a deadline:
I will have the annoying insurance thing sorted out, done, and in the mail by Wednesday, March 31.
Hope everyone is having a good week! We're over the hump & on the way to Friday! Good night,
I don't know why, but I do seem to make some progress on annoying projects in the chatbox. I know, I know, I keep plugging the silly chatbox, but several folks have found it to be a transformational space for yucky tasks.
I started off today here, but somehow nothing got posted. However, some good things continued to happen, thanks to setting up a paypal account so I can make minute but monthly contributions here (hats off to Pro). I have been paying enormous transfer fees each month to send money home to cover bills. Each time it has cost upwards of $100. Apparently paypal will allow me to deal with transfering money internationally without the big fee!
I started on a mini-project my boss has been procrastinating on: it is small, but important and so I went ahead and drafted it up for her and forwarded it for her review. Things will be in place tomorrow and I can tell she was relieved.
Due to conversation with husband around fiscal things, he went to a new bank today and found another alternative at a place that won't go on strike, that is closer and doesn't have 2 hour long lines!
There were sufficient leftovers in the fridge that I did not have to cook!
I took the opportunity to clean out the fridge so now I know what is in it and can menu plan
I went to the doctor and was able to communicate adequately even though he did not speak English.
I had an opportunity to eat lunch with a friend
I value the work that I am doing
my closest friend comes back from maternity leave tomorrow
I had a great heart to heart phone call with a friend from home

I got all 6 units of project 1 up to date. Got the 2 units for project 2 done. Got another 11 units of project 1 dumped on me, completed 10 (1 may not have to be done at all)
According to my timelogger, actually got approx 8 hours of work in! *Whew*.
That basically means I'm up to date with the really necessary stuff... and got nearly a day's work done in a day. Now I just need to catch up on the backlog.
It is 7pm though, so i'm running significantly late for meeting the friend (not just me alone fortunately, we're all meeting at a cafe). I'll take my victories where I can...
I can see that there are things here that I will not get to today. And that's fine. I need to learn to schedule *less* not more.

But now I'm panicking, both about the Cytoscape application and the senior thesis stuff...Cytoscape because I feel totally unqualified, and senior thesis stuff because (due to procrastination+insane grad school visits) I haven't worked seriously on it in a few weeks.
Deep breath, I'm unqualified in some ways but overqualified in others, and my thesis is close enough to done that two weeks off won't sink me.
I'm going to go out running to work off some of my nervousness, then come back and implement expression filtering.
