Wednesday March 26 2008

So let's set about creating ourselves for today, a step at a time.

c ci 10pm

weird day.  productive.  but unpleasant.  thanks to this forum i was able to force myself to do a lot of things i think i would normally have procrastinated about.  But it seems the result is that i feel like i had to spend all day forcing myself to do things i didnt like.  Ironic, huh? And i am left with emotional drain, not a sense of accomplishment.

anyone else ever feel this way?  This may have been the first day i've ever had this much success fighting those avoidance impuses, so this might be new ground for me.  which i guess is a good thing?  It doesnt feel that good.

I have to do my status report.  It's been a good week according to the measurment i'll be reporting, and i think normally i'd be looking forward to it, altho usually i put it off til midnight or 1am.  Now it's 10pm, and i'm getting to it pretty much when i planned, but i'm much less happy about it.  There it is again.  What is this?

Maybe i need some time w/ my HP :)

c ci 1:30am

status report done.  2ook me like 2.5 hrs.  bed.

Yay!Congratulations on a

Yay!
:D

Congratulations on a productive day! Be sure and spend some 'HP' time or time with friends tommorow... ;)

(Which I already linked to)

You have reserves of willpower, it might have been kind of draining - but think of it like exercise, it'll get easier in time. This is the aches and pains of new muscles.

Have some food (get your blood sugar up), get some sleep, watch something funny, and most of all, feel proud of your accomplishments!

fascinating

So "it just so happens" that his theory perfectly aligns with my experience.  It's as if i read his article and then wrote my post.  I exercised more self-control than i have in months, and i'm exhausted--just as if i had run more miles than i'm used to, i'd be exhausted.

The idea of training ones self control as one trains muscies is...well, fascinating.

In my spiritual thought life, i tend to tie self-control up into following the HP, idea being, one must have self-control to deny oneself and follow HP.  How does this new science inform that spiritual phenomena?  Fascinating.

do i have enuf self-control muscle left to not jump into working these ideas thru?  I guess i'm tired enuf that i just want to get back to my status report and finish it, watch TV w/ my SO, have my quiet time, and get some delicious sleep.

Falcon CI -- Deadline commitment

Hi all,

I'm checking in to keep a promise to myself.  I need to get an annoying insurance thing taken care of.  Because it has no external deadline, it's easy to put off forever -- which is bad, because I could be getting reimbursed for a substantial amount of money.

So I'm creating and committing to a deadline:

I will have the annoying insurance thing sorted out, done, and in the mail by Wednesday, March 31.

Hope everyone is having a good week!  We're over the hump & on the way to Friday!  Good night,

Falcon

annoying projects

I don't know why, but I do seem to make some progress on annoying projects in the chatbox. I know, I know, I keep plugging the silly chatbox, but several folks have found it to be a transformational space for yucky tasks.

transformational space

can you buy one of those at Ikea?  i love that phrase.

lol clement

lol, you may be able to, but I don't speak Swedish: it is probably called a 'förvandlingen utrymme'

no deadline--difficult

Oh man, those no-deadline things plague me too.

Good for you falcon.  Do you want us to send you annoying reminders as the day get closer ;)

Thanks, clement!

Thanks for the offer!  But believe me, the insurance thing is quite annoying enough all on its own!  Tongue out

Falcon

lol

Recycler CI 7:40pm EST

Hi Pro Buddies! :)

Wow, I am really impressed with everyone's lists and progress today :)

I have had a regular day: walk, gym, work, walk home, neighborhood walk, start a load of clothes to wash.

Tonight:

brush teeth & floss
pack mini-bag for in the morning
Do yoga session at home
Take melatonin
Go to sleep at reasonable hour ;)

Good luck to everyone with their projects! :)

Recycler

Thank you, gals & guys, for being here! :)

e's its-almost-Thursday check in

I am grateful today:

I started off today here, but somehow nothing got posted. However, some good things continued to happen, thanks to setting up a paypal account so I can make minute but monthly contributions here (hats off to Pro). I have been paying enormous transfer fees each month to send money home to cover bills. Each time it has cost upwards of $100. Apparently paypal will allow me to deal with transfering money internationally without the big fee!

I started on a mini-project my boss has been procrastinating on: it is small, but important and so I went ahead and drafted it up for her and forwarded it for her review. Things will be in place tomorrow and I can tell she was relieved.

Due to conversation with husband around fiscal things, he went to a new bank today and found another alternative at a place that won't go on strike, that is closer and doesn't have 2 hour long lines!

There were sufficient leftovers in the fridge that I did not have to cook!

I took the opportunity to clean out the fridge so now I know what is in it and can menu plan

I went to the doctor and was able to communicate adequately even though he did not speak English.

I had an opportunity to eat lunch with a friend

I value the work that I am doing

my closest friend comes back from maternity leave tomorrow

I had a great heart to heart phone call with a friend from home

what is on my mind that I must-NO-Want to do: taxes! research! email to N, practicum work

before bed: 5 minute straighten of the bedroom, teeth, face, reflect on the day, 12 step readings

gnight!

Sweet dreams, e

good to hear all that good stuff

Grail CI, 9.50am (Thurs)

Todo's at work:
For one project - 1 long unit, 5 shorter units.
Evaluate status & todo's of other project (at least 2 units?)
Leave work by 5.30pm, so I can...
Afterwork:
Go see a friend who is back from overseas
Put a load of washing on at home
Do pick-up in my room for 5 minutes

Grail CO, 7pm (Thurs)

I got all 6 units of project 1 up to date.
Got the 2 units for project 2 done.
Got another 11 units of project 1 dumped on me, completed 10 (1 may not have to be done at all)

According to my timelogger, actually got approx 8 hours of work in! *Whew*.

That basically means I'm up to date with the really necessary stuff... and got nearly a day's work done in a day. Now I just need to catch up on the backlog.

It is 7pm though, so i'm running significantly late for meeting the friend (not just me alone fortunately, we're all meeting at a cafe).
I'll take my victories where I can...

kaoba 4pm

I'm back from:

(X) drive child 1 to class

I can see that there are things here that I will not get to today. And that's fine. I need to learn to schedule *less* not more.

( ) write to Cy
( ) declutter 15 min
( ) taxes with husband
( ) assist child 2 with homework

scarlett CI 12:30 pm EST

Hey y'all - been gone a long time.  I was out of time, and now I am struggling to get back on a schedule and face all the work I have to catch up on.

Today I have ONE goal - to update my master to do list and really look at everything I've got to do, without fear or judgment.

Here goes.

Become aware of resistance, and let go.

Sounds like a good plan!

(nm)

let's hope so!

Become aware of resistance, and let go.

welcome back. good luck.

welcome back.  good luck.  You're on the right track.

thank you.

Become aware of resistance, and let go.

kromer 8:55 (PT) CI

Busy day today!
Already done: Took brother to school, cleaned kitchen, emailed A, then got distracted for a bit.
I have a long and somewhat overwhelming to-do list, so I'll just post the first few things.
*Write a rough bio of myself, explaining why I want to work with Cytoscape this summer
*Figure out how to contact developers DONE
*Choose 2 projects that most interest me DONE
*Implement expr filtering for senior thesis
*Tidy room (make bed+put away laundry) DONE

kromer 10:20 CI

OK, made some progress (including some good progress on Cytoscape project proposal+bio)
But now I'm panicking, both about the Cytoscape application and the senior thesis stuff...Cytoscape because I feel totally unqualified, and senior thesis stuff because (due to procrastination+insane grad school visits) I haven't worked seriously on it in a few weeks.
Deep breath, I'm unqualified in some ways but overqualified in others, and my thesis is close enough to done that two weeks off won't sink me.
I'm going to go out running to work off some of my nervousness, then come back and implement expression filtering.

kromer 2:30 CI

OK, going quite slowly today, but I've made some progress.
I went running, had a (reasonably) healthy lunch, and finished my bio/expln for why I want to work on Cytoscape.
Now I *really* need to do this expr. filtering thing...being stalled out on my thesis is a bad thing, I need to get over it.
When I've gotten expr. filtering working, I'm going to:
*Find a list of Cytoscape plugins
*Download Cytoscape source
*Finish up taxes.

I'm dreading this expr. filtering thing, so I'm going to talk myself through starting it in the chatbox.

I finished it!

Yay! Filtering by gene expression is done! (well, I'm going to see how it changes my results tomorrow, but the icky part is finished)

I need to leave to pick up my friend in 15 miutes.
In the meantime, I'll find a list of Cytoscape plugins and tidy up my room.
After dinner with my friend, I need to finish up the rough draft of my proposal to work on Cytoscape and post it on the Cytoscape devel list. I'll check in with a more detailed plan when the time comes.

Reframing (kromer)

I really like how you reframe your thoughts. It sounds like you were talking to a friend, which happens to be yourself!

you're managing it

you sound like you're managing your procrastination today.

About applying, i have been thinking that perhaps nearly all the applicants that a business or school considers have strengths and weaknesses.  And mine are just one particular mix.  This helps me not over-emphasize my weaknesses and under-emphasize my strengths.

Karen's CI

Today has a bit more on the schedule.  I didn't accomplish studying yesterday.  I still have problems getting geared up for that in the evening.  I think I'll have to come up with another plan of action.

Here's my plan:
Hang up laundry
Pick up prescriptions
Price compare & purchase Turbo Tax Premier
Take styrofoam to Publix
Pick up milk at creamery
Go to church
Complete Unit 1, if possible.

I hope I'm not overdoing it again.

Peace,
Karen

milk at creamery

sounds yummy.  good work so far today!

kaoba 10am

Some further progress:

(X) assemble and mail newsletter
(X) talked to my mother (she called me)

Now starts the hard part ... the calls ... I'm going to have a bit of a snack first and then I'll tackle those.

( ) call Ia
( ) call Go
( ) call Cg
( ) send invoice for March consulting
( ) clear desk 15 min
( ) write to Cy
( ) declutter 15 min
( ) take a 30 min walk on the hilly course
( ) do the plantar fasciitis stretching routine (it's working!)
( ) shower
( ) make and eat lunch
( ) drive child 1 to class
( ) taxes with husband
( ) assist child 2 with homework
( ) keep sink empty and dry through the day

bookend starting menial boring task

d knows how i feel...

finished

i guess i should have called it *long* boring task.
nearly 3 hrs. some interruptions.  maybe 50% on task.  I could have *easly* just postponed it for 3hrs, so i guess i'm happy.  relatively speaking.

bookend pa.org :)

15 min was spent here.

Journey 9:30

I'm sort of in "vacation mode" today as my daughter's surgery is tomorrow, and then I'm in class next week - so I don't really want to start on anything, I just want to hang out in the break room and drink coffee and chat.

I really pushed yesterday and got a lot done on the project that's lagging.  I made some written recommendations to the slow-moving project leader and asked my co-worker to keep it going while I'm gone.  So I feel good about that, and there's not much else I can do except hope for the best.   They are probably glad I'm gone for a few days :) as I have let my frustration show a bit.

First task is to get the status report out to the team for their input.
