Salamander's check in - Tues 11 Sep '12

Thanks to Mole for the delightful haiku! Today, I am remembering 9/11 - a truly dreadful day in the history of mankind.

Today the hot water is off/broken and the shower isn't working. The shower hasn't been working for ages (it leaks everywhere, and seems to like light fittings in particular) but it's been one of my biggest procrastinations, so I am thrilled the water doesn't work today and I reported it immediately to the landlord. It means now both of them will be attended to - and hopefully by winter I will have a functioning hot shower that's safe in my home. Looking at the WHY (and hopefully identifying why I procrastinated) is something I haven't a clue about.

So a few tasks this evening:

  • Wash up
  • Open post
  • Phone hospital to reschedule ENT appointment
  • Prepare next load of washing for when hot water is back on.
  • Prepare gym bag
  • Make dinner

Later/tomorrow

  • Sign and prepare to post documents for accountant
  • Change cat tray
  • Dust sitting room
  • Cut fringe
  • Read book in bed
  • Email AA

NB Buy more cat litter on Wednesday!

"And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom." (Anais Nin)

Good morning. I'm up

Good morning. I'm up before noon. I plan on making a repeat of that! Laughing

In the spirit of continuing the abolishment of procrastination - or should I say instead, celebrating the victory of getting things completed (yesterday was a big day) - this is my list for today:

(Carry-overs from yesterday)
10:30 Call bank
10:30 - 10:40 Pay bills
10:40 - 10:50 Balance checkbook

10:50 - 11:00 Tranisition/prep for next set of 3

11:00 - 12:00 Photograph earrings
12:00 - 12:30 Stop for Lunch / Take meat out for dinner
12:30 - 12:45 Load DW
12:45 - 1:00 Tranisition/prep for next set of 3

12:45 - 2:00 Make price sheet
2:00 - 3:00 List on site
2:30 - 2:45 Put earrings in storage
2:45 - 3:00 Tranisition/prep for next set of 3

3:00 - 3:30 Take pup outside
3:30 - 3:45 Clean off desk in BR
3:45 - 4:00 Vacuum
4:00 - 4:15 Change slip cover on couch
4:15 - 4:45 Call D.
4:45 - 5:15 Email S.
7:00 - 7:30 Call C.

What I honestly want to do today is to work on my to do list for Wednesday, because it doesn't include phone calls!

Show up (done), calender, exercise.

First I want to pray for those still in pain.

we pray, very simply, in remembrance.

We remember: all the lives that were lost, the martyrs who were born, the heroes who did what no one thought possible. We remember.

We remember sacrifice.

We remember courage.

We remember greatness…”

It's an inside job...

Kodos 5:55

Early day today.

6:30-10:30 work

10:30-11:30 come home, eat and nap.

11:30-1:30 write

1:30-4:30 Get e-mail down to ZERO, go through paper pile and get down to manageable bits

4:30-5:00 library and gas station

5-10 Tuesday schedule, but instead of e-mail/paperwork, organize something in the house

Have a great day, everyone, no matter how productive.

Kodos--2:00

Whoops. Got home late, and then the eating/napping lasted until 2:00. So here's my revised schedule:

2-4 write/call Rhonda

4-4:30 library and gas station

4:30 start Tuesday schedule, with half an hour more for e-mail

Let's see how it goes...

Kodos--3:30 checkin

Argh. Not going very well today. It took me an hour and a half to make a few phone calls and get settled at my computer, so I'm going to readjust and write until 5:00, 4x20 min. bursts. Hopefully that will get me over the hump.

Hypatia's check-in

Not much free work time today - enough meetings to keep me going for ever.  lsast night I feel asleep listening to the radio about 8pm, woke at 2.30am to clean my teeth and went back to sleep in my day clothes. Got up at 8am this morning.  So much for getting anything useful done last night!

work:

  • write report for Thursday
  • in-tray
  • lunch
  • meetings
  • write up CSA report
  • meeting

evening:

  • tai chi
  • unit 8 revision notes
  • do washing

Somuchmoreispossible (PKA Somu_Sible...get it?)

At school in the 1970s, lessons were 45 minutes. Taking off five mins for start/end faffing, that was a maximum 40 minutes to endure with one's least favourite (and usually poorest) teacher. Today, to prevent time-bingeing once started on something, and avoidance of things not started, I (1) divide my work-day* priorities into nine numbered headings; (2) committ to working on one priority at a time for 40-minute sessions; (3) use an online random number generator (RNG) (http://www.mathgoodies.com/calculators/random_no_custom.html) to decide for me at the end of each session which priority to tackle in the next 40-minute session.

As a result, I find myself working on nine different projects/tasks simultaneously, one consciously and eight in the sub-conscious (where all one's best work is done) at any given time. This is no different than having English, French, Geography, History, Music, Maths, Chemistr, Physics and Biology all on the go. At the end of each session, I no longer have to make the decision (or, more likely, dither and delay) which project/task to address next; my RNG-fairy does that for me. If she picks something I don't want to do, I choose to do it anyway because I know I only have to endure the displeasure for 40-minutes before moving onto a more pleasant (I hope) topic.

Today, my target is to complete 10 x 40-minute sessions; so far, two down and eight to go.

Best wishes to all.

*PS Stage 1 is attacking procrastination where it's most acute in my work life. Stage 2 (to be introduced next week) will bring in home life and just-me priorities too, such as home-admin, exercise, meditation, reading, recreation-planning, gardening and housework.

Somuchmore... 2100h UK update

Completed 9 x 40 minute work sessions today. At the end of each one, I'm actually enjoying the anticipation of which area of work my RNG-Fairy will choose next.

Tomorrow, planning 0600h start (instead of 0830 today) to complete 10 x 40 minute sessions plus a meeting across town that'll require 90 mins including travel.

Bring it on.
