Agnus checking in

I've been rehearsing how long things take me, because Wednesday I start an 8-5 office job after 8 years of being a home-based and traveling consultant. So this is bound to be a bit of a culture shock.  I'm sure it won't always take me 45 minutes to prepare and pack the day's food and 50 minutes to shower, dress and primp...but that's what it took this morning. Sigh.  Then I have a 45-minute commute each way.

By the time I add J care, pet care, recovery commitments and exercise, I'll need to arise at 3am to get to the office on time!  How do other folks do this?  Any and all timesaving/life-managing tips are welcome!

Good luck with new job Agnus!

I'm bad at mornings - my best suggestion is develop a routine so that you don't have to make any decisions in the mornings.  Like Hypatia said, decide about clothes (including accessories!)  and food the night before.   Set things up for yourself so that you just go through a set schedule in the mornings.   It's the only way I can deal with it because my brain does not start working until about 9 am.

Embrace the suck!

thanks journey!

Good advice; I'm taking this to heart.  Clothes and food ready for the morrow!

"My boundaries enclose a pleasant land." Psalm 16

morning routine

All the best with the new job, Agnus.

When I used to preapre my lunch at home, I'd make sandwiches with somethin easy, like cheese, peanut butter or sliced meat, chop up some carrots and celery and add radishes and tomato.

I gave that up when I had to spend up to an hour getting my husband up in the morning, and opted for something that didn't require any preparation and could be kept at work.  So now it's a can of good quality soup heated in the microwave at work, a yoghurt (kept in the fridge at work) and a piece of fruit.  Occasionally if I have a proper lunchbreak I go to a cafe and have a cooked meal, so I don't have to cook at night.

The shower, dressing and primping will speed up with time.  Just make sure you've decided the night before what you're going to wear, so you don't have to spend ages looking for something that has been ironed (my current problem).  It's also worth thinking about having a shower before you go to bed, and skipping the one in the morning sometimes.  I reckon it takes 30-45 minutes to get myself ready in the morning.

H.

hypatia, great thanks

These are great ideas.  I do need extra time in the mornings to make sure my husband is stable - or get him stable - before I dare to leave for the long day.  I really like the idea of having some packaged food on hand at the office, for the days when his caregiving needs exceed the time available in my morning routine.  Showering at night hadn't occurred to me; I'll give that a try!

"My boundaries enclose a pleasant land." Psalm 16

Saving time in the morning

We have a little fridge in our office, and I keep lunch supplies there; that way I can wash my fruit and make my sandwiches in my lunch break rather than having to make time in the morning or get organised the night before. Could you do that?

sure could, elvira

Sandwiches aren't on my menues, but I could sure put some fruit, veggies and protein in the fridge at work every few days, and assemble a meal during my lunch hour to save time in the morning - thanks!

@agnus

Can you hire someone to help with cleaning and pet care, and perhaps assist J?  Occasionally?

Can you honor your own recovery by letting your sponsees know that you cannot be as available as you used to be -- and give them option of finding another sponsor?  This could be a good way of modeling selfcare and recovery to them. You can acknowledge that you are not god -- and therefore cannot be all things to all people.

One thing I used to do when working long hours was ... eat half lunch during my paid 15-minute morning break.  Eat other half lunch during my paid 15-minute afternoon break.  During my unpaid lunchhour, I would LEAVE the premises, go to a park, and sit in car or on grass (depending on weather) and nap and meditate, -- or go for a walk outdoors doing a "moving meditation" -- and completely release all control and worries and thoughts, and just BE ... in presence of higherpower, grateful for natural world.  This was very restorative.

@ movingalong - thanks

What healthful counsel!  thanks, movingalong. My daily sponsee calls already had dropped from 6 to 4, then to three...and this week I cut back to 2 sponsees plus my own daily call to my sponsor.  I love, love, love the idea of spending generous time really "checked out" in the middle of the day!  I'm going to seek out all the park areas within 10 minutes of the office and make a plan to enjoy them as you suggest.

Lavida (formerly Progress) CI Mon. 7/30

Good morning,

I felt like changing my name so Progress is now Lavida :)

After a rough weekend emotionally, I am still kind of down/low-energy but I'm doing okay. I already attended UA meeting & completed rewriting an article this morning by 10am. It is now 10:30.

Today I will try to write 10 articles. It is now too late to pay my rent on time, so I'm accepting I will owe a $65 late fee. Oh well. I'll do the best I can this week to catch up.

I don't know how much energy I'll have today, but as a minimum I'll

  • empty the dishwasher
  • rinse out all the plastic containers ready for the recycling collection tomorrow
  • wash some more clothes
  • contact the builder about the wall
That last item really scares me, because it's a big decision involving someone else and spending a lot of money, so I've been putting it off for a long time; and now I'm afraid he'll be annoyed that I haven't done it before.

Oh dear, here we are at 18.40 BST and I've done none of those! Better get down to the kitchen NOW!

Done the top three and now it's nearly time for bed and  my stomach is just tied up in knots at the thought of doing the last.

I am quite delirious, because I've done it! I've done it! Smile I feel like running rund and round outside waving my arms and shrieking!

congratulations Elvira

That is quite an achievement.  Well done!!!!
