Procrastinators Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from chronic procrastination.
Haven't checked in for a while, partly because I was so flat out doing things last week before I went away for a family weekend.
Mostly staying on top of things, worst problem has been procrastinating on going to bed in the part of the week when my husband is away and I'm here on my own.
Will go for my bike ride now, then do my lists for the week. There is lots to do, will need to set priorities.
Happy Monday! I'm still tired from working Saturday night and having the grandkids Sunday afternoon. I was very happy to see the kiddos though since I've been working so many weekends I haven't had them over in a while. I am going to make today a short day. I am 'on call' starting tomorrow so I can't slack except for the holiday on Thursday and I will still be on call then. It's a good thing, though, keeps me from falling off the edge in after-project letdown mode.
I have a new project starting up and it's stuff that I am unfamilar with, so there will be a learning curve and I'll be looking for ways to avoid facing the scary newness. Today is easy though, preparation for being on call - several requests to get submitted, reviewed, and approved.
Update 5:30 I didn't finish my MITs for today but I have a really good excuse! The building was on fire! Actually, it wasn't really on fire but we had to evacuate because there was smoke somewhere. After we got back in the building the boss said what the heck just go home. I'm going to work on the X request prep a little bit more and see if I can finish it this afternoon from home. It was quite a bit more involved than I expected, so if I can get it out of the way today I'll be happy.
While I'm in lab (Mon/Tues), I need to work mostly on microscopy. Also need to do c.m, hopefully meet w/ T., resuspend probes, and get set up to do computational work. And I want to spend some time on non-work stuff (church/community work, also need to go shopping)
Then on my days off (Wed-Sun), I'll try and do about 2 hrs a day of computational work.
For today, I want to:
*Do c.m., ask YC if he can help when I'm out of town (will do this soon)
*Orders (started)
*Email DP, T
*Careful study for identifying cell types, start looking at sections, take 5 sample pictures and email DR for confirmation
*Email about girl's group, brainstorm response to P email, figure out room reservation
*Email about s.
*Make a schedule for the week (including computational work)
*Journal club
*Prayer
*Exercise
(did some walking, at least)
Sunday had a big hunk of unclaimed time and it went mostly to "small" tasks. But small tasks can take more time than you expect.
Of these, the most frustrating: Put a bunch of time into finding info I had previously misfiled, for entry into online forms I'm required to submit by the end of the month, only to find out once I assembled it all that the submission website doesn't work properly and I couldn't login to submit the data. I spent enough at my end to satisfy myself that the problem wasn't my fault (or my computer's), at least nothing that would be easily diagnosed. Now I'm gonna be on a technical support line during the week.
Procrastination angles to this tale:
- Problem: Bad file organization (one of my serious procrastination side effects) made assembling the data way tougher than it needed to be.
- Good thing: At least I tried to get on the website before the due date. I found the problem with enough time to deal with tech support.
- Judgement call: Should I have stopped banging my head against a wall (the faulty login) earlier? Probably spent an hour more than I should have, motivated by the desire to get the task out of the way once I started (and not have to deal with tech support).
- Bad reaction: After giving up, was frustrated and pretty much unproductive the rest of the evenning.
Overall moral: The real time costs of a task are often in how we prepare for it and deal with the unexpected once under way.
Now time to rest and be ready for Monday, Once again the challenge is to put significant effort into the top priority rather than be dominated by immediate/urgent tasks.
I came up pretty strong this weekend, and did lots of things that I should have done a long time ago. I plan on taking that momentum into this monday and knocking out another monkey on my back while spending the rest of my time studying for my MIS and Stats tests.
(8-10) - Finish Super CEO
(10-11) - Make sure resume is uploaded into gateway
(11-1) - Lunch, F-Off
(2:30 - 4) - Study for STATS (EDIT: HOLY SHIT! I MIGHT BE ABLE TO GET EVERYTHING DONE! THIS IS HUGE!)
(930 - 12) - Set up MIS test final stuff.
Easy and very attainable. I'm pretty sure I will be able to finish the top two in way les than three hours, which gives me some time to be a bum before hitting the stat books hard for an hour and a half.
Jake
NOTE: I'm really not sorry that I didn't do the MIS stuff. I have been working hard all day long, and I deserved a nice evening. Also, I am gonna get a good 8 hours of sleep, and have another productive day tomorrow with some chill time. It didn't HAVE to be done today, and I really deserved this evening of screwing off.
tomorrow: -shower/hair/etc
