It's Tuesday!!!

Good luck getting through today :)

Sammy ci :: 01/25/11

Mentally exhausted today! Got up at 6, showered, class 8am to 1pm, work 1:15 to 5:30. Got home at 6ish, spent some time chatting with my roommate, lots of time surfing the web, and some time on the phone with my parents. Now I need to buckle down, and get a few things done, so i can get in bed, watch a iittle tv, and get some sleep! Need to pick up a few things at walmart in the morning, so I'll need to get up in time to do that before class.

To Do:

Review assignments for GD2, and submit by midnight.

Review supply list for tomorrow's classes, and compile a list of what to buy at walmart.

Lights out at 11:30.

Crazybug CI

Really struggling today for some reason.  Foggy brained and unfocused. I have two hours left in my work day. I pray that I find the strength to use them in a positive way.

(Crazybug)

Hang in there! You could have not posted at all, but you still did! :)

thanks katia!

I appreciate the support. I'm learning that even the smallest things can make a difference. I'll keep coming back and keep taking baby steps toward progress...and reminding myself that just because I didn't have a stellar recovery day today doesn't mean that tomorrow can't be one! :)

I continue to learn and be inspired by all who are here...thank you.

Sharpening Our Tools

What
we do each day is not as important as how we do it. If we are
abstaining, working the program, and staying in touch with the Higher
Power, then whatever we do during the day will go as it should.

When
we get careless and sloppy with abstinence, neglect to use the tools of
PA recovery, forget the Twelve Steps, then we may expect trouble. When
we are out of touch with our Higher Power and our PA friends, then
nothing seems to go as it should.

If you feel yourself becoming
careless, then make that neglected phone call, read and re-read the
literature, go to a meeting today. Listen within yourself for the quiet
voice God uses to give you enthusiasm and direction.

We may each become God's tool if we keep ourselves in good working order through this program.

Make me an effective tool to do Your will.

Happy Morning (Not)--Comments requested

I came into work this morning to find the following:

A big curved mirror had been affixed behind my desk, like the kind you see in a store aisle to spot shoplifters.  It gives others a clear view of my workstation.

A printout that I left on the printer about something not related to work was lying on my desk.  My boss had scrawled across the page, “Why are you reading this on my time!”

I am embarrassed and ashamed.  This is a very sideways way to reprimand me, with no contact with him after an hour and a half.  Frankly I don’t want to speak to him, and have avoided passing his office so far.  I don’t know what to say.

Obviously the other people in the office are aware of the situation.  When I first saw the mirror and asked, “What’s this for?” to someone else, he said “What is a mirror usually for?”  I don’t know if I’m being reprimanded or being made fun of.  Neither one is particularly friendly, although not unexpected with this hardball crew that I work with.

Ok, so my boss just deigned to speak.  He said to one of the other guys, “I can’t tell what she’s doing—all I can see is the back of her head.  At least I know she’s in there.”  To the guy who put the mirror up, he said “You nailed it!”  And they had a nice laugh at my expense.  So I just stuck my head out and said, “Good morning to you too!”  More laughter.  What else can I do?

I could take the damn thing down, but honestly maybe it will help me be more accountable and do my work.  I need to be humble enough to admit that I can understand my boss’ frustration with me, and that a sideways reprimand meant to be somewhat lighthearted is better than what I deserve (which is to say, severe consequences for poor performance).  I think I will leave the mirror up, decide not to harbor any hard feelings, reject the sense of shame, lift up my head, thank God that I still have a job, and ask Him to help me stay on task today.  Thanks for listening.

The scoop

Turns out it was all a joke, top to bottom--they were pulling my chain.

Acceptance, forgiveness, no hard feelings--thanks to the program and all of you for listening.  I can choose my attitude.

re:the scoop

I'm glad to hear it was a joke, although it was a hurtful joke and in bad taste.  Still, that's better than a stealth reprimand I guess!

Acceptance

Thanks all, I was looking for solidarity and understanding.  And perhaps some pity, because I was feeling little.  (I’m standing tall now, with a slight limp.)

I’ve talked to my boss previously about my performance, and he knows I’m trying to do better.  But he does not understand, because he is an extremely high performer and workaholic.  He doesn’t expect that from everyone, but he does expect at least average effort.  And I am WAAAY overdue on a project.  He is frustrated that I continue to burn work time on the Internet, and he cannot understand why I can’t stop.

Also, he is not my supervisor.  He and I both report to the same supervisor.  When I say boss, I mean project leader.  He has authority over my day-to-day work, but not over pay and such.  I imagine that’s a difficult situation for him.  Our supervisor has no clue what goes on here and does not get involved, and that’s okay with me.

Were the mirror and note inappropriate?  Sure.  Did I deserve them?  Well, not really.  But the truth is, I deserve far worse, based on my past and continuing erratic performance.  And I have not had to meet those consequences.

It doesn’t do me any good to expect these folks to behave in ways counter to what experience has shown me is in their nature.  I cannot change them.  My interpretation is that the note started as an expression of frustration and anger, and the mirror was lightening things up.  I work in a very male world, surrounded by testosterone.   My boss flares up and cools down quickly, and humor is an outlet to keep it cool.  I got the message, and I know (now) that it was not intended to be mean.  True, they should not have done this, but it is not worth a confrontation, especially when I believe myself to be as much (or more) in the wrong, although not for the same reasons.

P.S.  The mirror is gone; the guy who owns it took it down.

P.S.S.  I am in the process of transitioning to a saner workgroup, but the deal includes continuing support for this current group, and completion of the overdue project.

@firefly

How horrible!  I'm assuming you work in a small company with no HR dept. because in a large corporation this kind of thing would not happen.  At least not in the US.

But, it sounds like you handled it pretty well, you laughed it off and took it as a joke.  Now the hard part, you should probably schedule a meeting with your boss and discuss it with him.

BIG HUGS to you

Dearest ((firefly))

I'm awful at giving advice, so please know I've been in similar situations, and you are not alone. Sending you an endless abundance of loving, affirming and protective prayers!!!

(firefly)

Don't put up with it! If your procrastination is affecting your work performance, force your boss to sit down and discuss it (painful, yes, but positive in the long run). Getting co-workers involved and making a joke of it at your expense is not okay, EVER!

It's so easy to let our own guilt push us down to the point where we think we "deserve" this kind of treatment. We aren't our addiction. You deserve better!

(firefly)

My comment: Take what you want and leave the rest, ony my personal opinion.

Your boss is the one who should be embarrassed and ashamed. esp at his stupid scrawl across the page. Mirror? Either everyone should have a mirror behind their desk or this sounds like you are being singled out.  Either fight it (is there anything you can do), really work your program to stay in an unhealthy situation if you have to, or start looking for another job.

Journey 9:30

Good morning and Happy Tuesday!   I got to the gym at 6:27 again today, so buoyed by that success I have set my alarms 2 whole minutes earlier.  Maybe I can make it at 6:25 lol.   I'm really excited about this slight improvement because I've been working on this for two months and couldn't seem to break that 6:30 barrier even if I got up earlier.

Traffic was really bad so I was a few minutes late to work but everyone else was too  so I won't worry too much about that.   As a matter of fact, 3 people still haven't made it in.

This is a busy week, so off I go to make my todo list.  Yesterday I was quite productive so I'll try to make it another productive day.

Have a productive and enjoyable day everyone.
