He's promoting that film. He's here probably because second only to the US, we produce the most crap into the atmosphere. Our PM couldn't give a rats *rse about the environment. We have a great economy and he's too afraid to shake it up a bit in the short term for that long-term gain.
Al Gore struck me as just what you said - smart and honest. Genuine and a real person. And yes, knows what's important. Instead of trying to rule the world, he's trying to save it. I like that :)

My attitude exactly. He used to say that all the time. But just recently he started saying he wouldn't rule it out (halleluyah!!). I think he just didn't want to run if he didn't have a chance, but his poll numbers are very strong now - I think he could win.
Besides being smart and honest, he can be very funny. He has a dry sense of humor. He did an absolutely hilarious "State of the Union" address on "Saturday Night Live" - a classic.
And speaking of not giving a rat's a** about the environment... There's no one worse than George W. Bush. He's the earth's worst nightmare (in every way!). Right before Bush was sworn in, Clinton quickly pushed through a whole bunch of irreversible environmental initiatives because he knew what was coming.
Did you see Gore's film, by the way? It's pretty good. I saw a piece on global warming on CNN that was more effective in some ways because they went to affected places and interviewed people, but the data he presents is very compelling (not that I needed convincing, but apparently some people do).
And do you recycle? And use energy-saving bulbs? I always rag my mother for talking the talk but not walking the walk. I went with her to see Gore's movie and she was cooing about him all the way home, but when I talked to her about recycling or using energy saving bulbs in her home, she flatly refused. Hypocrite.
Enviro stuff
We could see he was funny. He was interviewed by my FAVOURITE Australian interviewer, Andrew Denton (who is hilarious but also draws amazing, heartfelt stories from everyone from celebrities to average joes).
We do recycle! As much as possible. We have gotten to the point now where our recycling each week is consistently larger than our trash.
We try to cut down on electricty use as much as possible (DH is always making me go the the toilet in the dark - he says I don't need to see to wee!). We don't have energy saving lightglobes everywhere in the house yet. We use solar power to heat our pool 8). I use too much with our airconditioner - I don't like being too or too cold. It just gets so hot here!!!! And I hate being cold with a passion so I often have the heater on all day during winter }:). So I try, but am not quite good enough at it.
DH is HUGE on saving electricity. I always thought it was because he was cheap ;) but one day he explained how it all contributes to global warming.
I think it's not so much convincing that people need, it's just education. Once they have the knowledge, they won't need convincig (unless they are stupid, selfish politicians or mulit-nationals).
No, we haven't seen the movie yet. But we will!
