Welcome to Saturday.

So here's the situation. Everything in bold is still to be done:

* shower (15 minutes)
* balance checkbook (20 minutes, by a timer)
* pick up dog poop in backyard, change water in fountain (to keep fish alive) (1/2 hour)
* rake leaves on to grass (1/2 hour)
* mow backyard (which will pick up leaves) (1/2 hour)
* reading for lecture rewrite (1/2 hour)
*
fill dishwasher with dishes (20 minutes)
* write up spending plan (including whom to call) (20 minutes)
* wash dishes that didn't go in dishwasher (1/2 hour)

The lawnmower was cranky, but I finally got it going. It got 80-90% of the leaves, but missed the ones that were still wet, and therefore stuck to the ground. But that's a LOT less raking next Saturday morning. And it did get the grass down. It took longer than a 1/2 hour, but not much longer.

Anyway, the big three now are lecture prep, kitchen, and money. I am using lecture-reading as a way to rest physically, which I can feel I need to do. This is a tough flu! My wife watched a bunch of TV rather blearily, then drifted off to sleep.  She went to work 3 days this week, and that didn't allow her to really get better--so she is still down with it. Child being gone and wife being asleep help me get more done, at a pace I can manage.

But I'd really like to do something FUN with both of them tomorrow. One reason I procrastinate is that I don't allow time for fun--then I take it in ways that are supposed to be fun, but aren't very.

Thomas C.--Saturday check-in

Very slow going today. I have meditated and have eaten an unreasonable facsimile of breakfast and lunch (pizza and apple juice, and now a latte and cookies), but it's now 12:17 p.m. Part of it was catching up on sleep, part of it was procrastinating with the Web--online newspapers and magazines (I am increasingly enjoying Slate). But I have stuff to do, and the perfect situation in which to do it: sick wife, absent kid (with her best friend, whose mom picked her up this morning). Wife is watching TV; kid gets picked up later today, and if I have anything to do with it, much later.

So here's the list, along with guesses about how long each will take:

* shower (15 minutes)
* balance checkbook (20 minutes, by a timer)
* pick up dog poop in backyard, change water in fountain (to keep fish alive) (1/2 hour)
* rake leaves on to grass (1 hour)
* fill dishwasher with dishes (20 minutes)
* write up spending plan (including whom to call to make arrangements to be late) (20 minutes)
* mow backyard (which will pick up leaves) (1 hour)
* wash dishes that didn't go in dishwasher (1/2 hour)
* rest?
* rewrite lectures

I am putting the times because I re-read pro's post about exactly what a check-in is--it has not only a commitment to a specific list of things to do, but a specific time commitment; in that post, it was a clock time, but right now, as a procrastinator who estimates time pretty badly, I should at least try to estimate how long they take, and compare later.

So far this is what I've done:

* shower (15 minutes)
* balance checkbook (20 minutes, by a timer)
* pick up dog poop in backyard, change water in fountain (to keep fish alive) (1/2 hour)

All together it took about 5-10 more minutes than I thought--not bad.

I'm still not fully recovered from the flu, and raking leaves seems hard. But here in Northern California it is threatening to rain in an hour or so,and if it does rain, I won't have another chance to get the lawn done for a week. We want our realtor to come over and tell us what needs doing next Saturday, and I want to eliminate the obvious (like an untended lawn covered with months-old leaves). So here's the plan:

* rake leaves on to grass (1/2 hour, if I can pull it off)
* mow backyard (which will pick up leaves) (1/2 hour, likewise)
* rest--I'll need it (1/2 hour?)
* fill dishwasher with dishes (20 minutes)
* write up spending plan (including whom to call to make arrangements to be late) (20 minutes)
* wash dishes that didn't go in dishwasher (1/2 hour)
* rest some more (1/2 hour)
* start reading for lecture rewrite (1/2 hour)

Of course, that's puts it into the evening, so the rewrite reading may not happen. And I can accept that.

Hey y'all.

That's a lot of sewing and my hands tend to start hurting, so I think my strategy is to watch movies and take breaks to do other things.
