11.10 pm. A very late check-in.
Got myself into my client's office today - went OK - did some work and talked with some people.
Now just need to get off the computer and into bed.
The chat box made a big difference to me getting my last report done.
9:58 PM: Back at work after an unrelaxing dinner break. Managed to tackle exactly one tough case, and 4 easy ones, then fell completely off the wagon and spent the entire afternoon and evening procrastinating online. Frustrated and unhappy; did I mention stressed? I have played this part before. This.must.stop. No use continuing to flail tonite. The damage is done. But tomorrow the workday *will be* virtually internet free. Check in and check out here, no casual (ab)use. Any attempts to procrastinate will have to be faced without distractions, staring at the pile on the desk. Time for the cold turkey.
Seen the doctor this morning and I am well but very tired after a viral illness. I've been with a friend for most of the day and am now exhausted and need to sleep
12:29 PM I am feeling a bit of concern today. I awakened feeling a little down, and I arrived at work about 15 minutes late (9:15 AM). I had a conference call until 10:15 AM, and spent from then until now answering a couple of phone messages, eating breakfast in the cafeteria (I no longer eat at my desk), and...messing around with email, online news, and handling personal bills.
I know why I am procrastinating, at least partly. I have several cases from last week to review that are complicated and daunting, and I don't want to face them. In the process, however, newer cases are backing up. This is what got me into trouble at my last job. Anxiety about cases and the fear of making a mistake lead to my putting off making the hard decisions. I procrastinate and my productivity tapers off. At some point, I either decide to tackle the hard cases, or 'skip' them to get easier, newer cases 'out of the way'.
So I end up with kind-of-late easy cases and very late hard cases. This sank me, and possibly derailed me from my career track, at my last job. I have to, have to, have to tackle these hard ones. I have to, have to, have to *learn* and *adopt* a first in-first out, let the chips fall where they may approach, which should work for 90%-plus of the cases I face.
There will be the occasional case that requires additional research and legitimate delay, but if the problem is actually lack of steel in my backbone, putting the decision making off won't help. My experience and judgement will not increase by ignoring the case. Ironically, the converse is true. By forcing myself to make the hard decisions, they may come more easily next time. At least I will have a track record to guide me, and a retrospective sense of whether or not I was right.
The idea of mistakes (and being criticized) just frightens me too much, out of proportion to the possible consequences. Well, let's try a 20 minute dive into one of these.
Goal 1: 12:50 - 1:10 PM Attack 1 tough case. Back to report.
Yah, been struggling in the offline world. Need to get re-grounded. Don't want to keep reliving old scripts. That's why I am back. Hope you are doing well.
Didn't get to bed till 3:30 because I've been working on a project that I hadn't worked on as hard as I should have....Still proud of my progress, though, because I didn't wait till TOTALLY the last minute to work on it, and I have worked on it in multiple steps, not just one big rush at the end! Little victories, right?
Today:
Finish staining project #2
Evaluate progress, make new to-do list.
Will check in later.
Project #2 has reminded me again how much our procrastination affects our families and loved ones. I am very thankful for my father, who has graciously given up his ENTIRE weekend to help me in the wood shop with my sculpture.... he fullyl acknowledges that I got myself into this mess, but he kept a positive attitude, which kept me from getting down on myself and losing momentum.
Most of today will be taking the dreaded physics exam. EEK. I'm smart, but I'm very nervous as I hate doing badly. But it is exciting that it is almost done.
To Do Today -Vitamins2 antibiotic/1 BP/1FE -3 Sets of pills -Review test 4 -Look at learning objectives -PWN test -Call pediatrician, reschedule appt -Call lactation consultant, cry -Email school -Tutoring essay thing
more later, I'm sooo out of it.
I can safely say than I can definitely cross off PWN test instead of just taking it. Yay :D

OK, here I go! starting with antibody order and embedding and checking on expts, to be followed by staging.

So, a shortened list with small tasks:
Start DNA extraction (working on this now)
Order netbook + P's pres.
Half of staging (working on this now)
Schedule Install filter
Mail est. tax stuff + other check
Nevertheless, I am here, and I went back to the gym today after being away more than a week. I picked a bad day to return, but what the heck, I had decided to go back today so I did. I am also working on getting up early again, now that my 8 weeks of working weekends is over for a while. I did really good getting up early today, not so good at getting ready and out the door on time. I was up at 5:20, but didn't leave the house until 6:35, and got to the gym at 6:50. I did have a shorter than usual workout, so I was only 10 minutes late to work and everybody else is late too because of the weather. BUT tomorrow I will set my clock 5 minutes earlier, get up at 5:15 and try to be in the car at 6:00. If I can do that, I'll be at the gym at 6:15, have a one hour workout, quick shower and be in the car again at 7:30 and at work by 8:30 which is my goal.
Calendar, email, todo list now. I have a holiday party at lunchtime today, otherwise, my calendar is empty! so email, and todo list, and see ya later.
