Convalaria in trouble on Saturday.

I informed the person in charge that I will miss the hard deadline on Monday. I do not know what the consequences will be. I am feeling anxious.  I missed the soft deadlines because of my procrastination and avoidance of professional tasks and I missed the hard deadline because of my mothers illness and my involvememnt in her care. What will be will be .....
I do have a task to complete for Monday and I have spent the last 2 hours playing solitaire.....The task is within my possibilities.....and requires maybe 4 hours work. I also need to do my mothers laundry and prepare dinner by 6pm for mother andpossibly my son and me.

It is 4.19 saturday afternoon and I want to

  • respond to e mail from person in charge
  • cook dinner
  • clean up kitchen
  • locate the work I need to do in THE BACKLOG pile
  • deal with laundry
  • feed mother dinner
  • read and correct the work .....expect about 3 hours
  • quick check of another piece of work for that level
  • modify on line reports
  • call friend
  • walk dog
  • brush teeth, medicate and be in bed by 12 midnight

re: convalaria in trouble

Surely you will get a break due to your mother's illness, but whatever the outcome, you were honest with your project manager, and with yourself.  That can't be a bad thing!   You can't change the past, but you can learn from it and move on.  I've found that when I admit my errors and shortcomings to myself, HP, and other people, the better things go for me.   You'll be in my thoughts and prayers today!

Convalaria, I hear you!

Just want to say, it looks like you are making a good start, just by making such a good well thought out list and checking in. Well done. It's amazing what can be gained just by writing down what the real tasks are.

But I know exactly what you are talking about. I can't tell you how much solitaire I've been playing because I'm so anxious about this job I'm doing. Yep. I definitely lost at least two hours to it before my deadline last Monday. I have another deadline this Monday, then in 2 weeks the whole piece must go to the printer. Someone told me that pattern (solitaire binging, for instance) is checking out when overwhelmed, and it's a hard one to break. But not impossible to get through, right?

Progress can be made in inches, they say. Let's keep taking one thing at a time. Take care of yourself!

I did my 20 minutes as soon as I finished dinner, and it was nice.  I fed the birds, watered the plants, played with the dogs, put a load of clothes in the dryer.  I'm going to check out the grocery ads briefly and then . . . guilt-free play time!

Hi Yoga Buddies & Pro Buddies! :)

Today: stretched, work, completed deadline projects, bought gifts for young cousins, rode train home, monitoring news on my other Internet group ;)

Tonight: am I going to do anything? If I do, I will edit my post, but may just rest.

Have a great evening, everyone! :)

Recycler

Thank you, gals & guys, for being here! :)

Journey 4:30

Fairly productive afternoon!  I'm working on a project I enjoy, so although it's new and a bit scary, I'm moving along ok.

This has not been my most productive week ever.  Still better than when I first joined this forum, though.  Not having any pressing deadlines, and having a houseguest, are both keeping me less than optimally focused.  I'm working on the new project for 45 more mins, then I'm outta here for the weekend!

I'm taking home some reading material on the new stuff, maybe I'll actually look at it over the weekend.

Hiyall! Hope you are feeling grateful for the kind of day you're having. If you're even reading this, you're trying to recover. And if you're posting, you are recovering! All addiction including my procrastination is progressive in nature. So here at PA, at least we are all progressing in the right direction, however haltingly...

My day started with last night's procrastination about bedtime (sigh), then oversleeping this morning (grr).  I took a sponsee to a 7am meeting, visited after. Home: laundry, major pet care (fleas bigtime), missed a conf call due to computer probs (grr), checked email, more 'puter probs. Next up: prayerfully review my to-do list for current MITs.

Rita 3:10

Wow this is like a record-slow starting day.  Here are the Top 3 MITs:

  1. Keep my word! - Update KS and VA and email EP
  2. Act on RIG proposal and email Gordon/Kim some ideas
  3. Post office

Next MITs: Call for haircut - Buy ankle wrap for me, flea collar for TJ - Listen to the webinar EP suggested before preconference - Check system - Online lookups:  tips on pricing ins   power cord -DWS Job Prep - Review PEP proposal - Read Nancy’s letter and reply  -Return call to DY

The first MIT is already 2 hours later than committed, which tempts me to feel fatally flawed and waste yet more time - yet I plunge on. The next 20 minutes are for that and that only. I will check in when done with MIT1.

hooboy 5:37

so much for "the next 20 minutes" - 1hr phone call with EP happened instead but everything I've been doing for the last 3 hours is related to MIT1 and a Big Event that happen Mon-Tues. I missed the post office, haven't thought about RIG, did call for haircut. Still time (thanks to zones) to address the RIG so staying true to that for next 20 minutes. Will ci @ 6pm ET.

ci 6:27 & 7:30

stayed on it but then had a phone call interruption. Emailed team: can we still make this deadline? I've done all of the work so far but more is ahead that needs team effort, and everyone is stretched. Decided not to wait on their reply to do the next steps because even if this one doesn't pan out, the next steps will be generally applicable to future projects of a similar nature that our team wants to do. So, back to it. Bookending another 20 minutes of focused concentration on estimating proposal.

That was productive...went for another 20, and another. No response yet from team so I'll close this out now and go get the ankle brace and flea collar. Then its play time til tomorrow. Thanks for being here, PA pals!

Rita plunges on!

Keep on keeping on, we'll get there!

Journey 1300 updated 1340

Went out for lunch so now I need to do another 20 minute start up.  After lunch is a tempting time to fall into the well of procrastination and it can take all afternoon to climb back out.

Bookending 20.

Update:  done, 40 minutes later :)

kromer 11:15 CI

Did numbered tasks from my 8:20 CI...now I need to:

1)Gather papers, pack lunch DONE
2)Go to lab DONE
3)Go to lab mtg DONE
4)Spend 45 min brainstorming about algorithm DONE

kromer 2:25 CI

Did all of the above, plus emailed sysadmin about broken work computer. (Good thing everything was backed up and that I have my laptop at work today!)

Now I'm going to:
1)Spend anther 45 min. brainstorming about algorithm.
2)Figure out what's wrong with STRING graph and what I need to do to fix it (30 min)
3)Fix STRING graph (30 min)
4)Calculate degreen and compare to BIOGRID graph (10 min)

When I finish all the above, I'll be done with my MIT's for the day (well, except for going to the surprise party ;-) )

kromer 5:10 yuck!

I didn't do the above...instead, I downloaded datasets (which needed to be done, but which wasn't as urgent, and wasn't what I said I'd do...grr to me!).

I think I've figured out what needs to be done with STRING graph, working on that now. I think I can at least get that done!

cl ci

i got back on track yesterday. "Giving up" and placing it all in HP's hands worked. I didnt need to feel a connection to HP. I just needed to trust. Of course i felt like all was lost, so what else was i going to do.

Now to hit that MIT again this morning, now.

Hang in there, Clem :-)
