UGH!!! I can't stand myself.

UGH!!! I can't stand myself.

I should have caught up yesterday, but this one problem frustrated me and I wasted HOURS doing totally random crap. I'm even more behind than I was before. I honestly might need to take this weekend to catch up. WHATEVER it takes, I'm going to catch myself up for the tests that I missed and go try to take those tomorrow, I will see what happens.

Internet news is the bane of my existence. I'm seriously considering completely prohbiting myself from it, and only reading news papers. Or setting a STRICT limit of 15mins a day. Back to work...

totally random crap

how many times have i wasted a day doing totally random crap! that's a really good description of it.

And the thing that gets me, is i, me, myself consider it less valuable than what i wanted to do that day. yet that same person (me) is choosing the less valuable thing.

There are people here who've tried web moratoriums. It has worked for them. There are others who do timers, like InstantBoss which gives you a time to work, a break time, and keeps cycling that way.

The latter avoids time bingeing. This article on this site No Time Bingeing: Key to Ending Procrastination explains about it. Norske, i had to face this yesterday. I was under the gun with 3 projects. And i just spent 1 hr on each one, in turn. It felt very scary, because ending my hour on one task feels like i'm never going to get back to it, so that's the end. I failed. But it's not true. I'm going to get back to it! Because i'm NOT going to time binge on the other projects. It worked. I got one done, and made good progress on the other 2. I mean, i'm not any productivity-god or anything, but for me, it was good progress.

Other people get help by reporting their lives and tasks on this forum (as you did). Speaking it out loud (so to speak :) to yourself and others helps people. And then checking-in to keep ourselves on track. And there's the chatbox that people talk themselves out of distractions and back on task.

There are many tools here. And people who have been going thru what you're going thru for years. Welcome to the club :)

re: totally random crap

We feel your pain! I can easily get lost in web surfing or video games when I'm avoiding doing something else. It has helped me to use those things as a reward for working on my task. I set a timer for 30 minutes, or even 15 minutes if I'm having one of those days. When I complete that interval, I take a 10-minute web surfing break. I get a lot of work done, AND I get to surf the web and actually feel good about it.

Good luck Norske. Did you talk with your professors? I feel sure you won't be the first procrastinator they've worked with.

don't beat yourself up too much

I know how you feel, Norske. I really do!!!! Been there, done that.

 But don't beat yourself up too much. And don't try to put yourself on too strict of a "time diet". Figure how what's getting in your way, then take a step - one step at a time. Make it realistic.

you guys are my heros!

Geez, you all seem so organized, with your to dos, and check-ins!! :-) I'm very impressed!

My head is spinning, it's been such a crazy day. I guess it's been productive, but the idea of recapping right now is more than I can deal with! Maybe later.

Azya - any idea what happened?

Azya, in the comment you posted (that I'm replying to), do you see a smiley or a broken link?

Did you do anything special in typing your message? I can't reproduce this.

testing smiley problem

Maybe it's because Azya didn't enable rich text? Here's the smiley again:

smiley problem

I see a smiley problem. I'm on the case...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Procrastination is the grave in which opportunity is buried.
there's something funny going on with smileys
On my test installation of Drupal, I don't get the block of smileys in the right sidebar (though it's configured to appear), but I do get a clickable list of smileys above the edit box (clickable only if tinymce is disabled).
Here, the block of smileys does appear on the right, but the clickable list won't open. I see the word "Smileys" in blue, but I can't click on it.
Meanwhile, I can't figure out why Azya's smiley comes up as missing. When I type the same thing, I get a smiley. But in her message it comes up missing. I looked at the path and it's pointing to a different place - very strange.
Here's the same smiley Azya typed: :-)
fixed one smiley problem...
The clickable list of Smileys above the edit box is now clickable. I'd changed the version of JQuery to fix another problem, but it broke this so I restored it.
You won't see the fix unless you first clear your browser cache (delete your temporary files), then close and reopen the browser.
I still don't know why the box appears here but not on the new installation (though I should be happen that the problem is only over there!).
And I still don't know how Azya managed to get the old path in her smiley.
we're heroes! lol
I'm not often accused of being organized lol, but the checkins really do help a lot.
Journey 8:45
I'm early to work today, through no fault of my own :) Traffic was exceptionally good today.
I'm supposed to have a "progress report" type meeting with my boss today, but he's out today so I can skip that thank goodness, since I'm not ready for it. I will prepare for it today and then reschedule at his convenience. He won't remember to reschedule - I think he's one of us lol. I'm going out to lunch with friends today, and that will be fun and something to look forward to.
I've checked email - didn't have much since I was the first one here this morning! I'm going to get some coffee and then set my MITs for the day. Back at 9:15.
Journey 10:00
Did I say I'd check back at 9:15? I'm a little late lol.
So far today, I have
- been to the gym
- read my email
- straightened my desk and my mind
- set my MITs for the day
- did a little reading about the OPM project
I'm going to work on OPM for the next hour.
Check back at 11:00
journey 1:30
took a nice long lunch with an old friend. That was fun. I haven't laughed until I cried in a long time. I don't have close friends like that here at this job. Course I worked at the old job for 22 years, maybe that has something to do with it!
Anyway, back to OPM. Check back at 2:30, by then I should have scanned the entire manual and figured out where I was with the install when I stopped working on it a couple weeks ago.
journey 5pm
Well, the afternoon did not go as planned. We had some network issues on the system we're building so spent the afternoon working on that with a couple of coworkers. No time to procrastinate, but didn't get much work done on my own project. I'll spend the next half hour doing my time sheet and setting everything up so I can get to work on OPM first thing in the am.
Tonight, spend half an hour on dishes and laundry, prep for tomorrow, and pick up the library book that I have on hold.
Movingalong needs to focus, today Thursday.
Hmmm.
I couldn't post an image in today's thread starter.
I wanted to post the "Wake Up to the Truth" image
because I forgot about an important deadline at work ...and just remembered it. :O
Well, I guess it will be another "No Frills Thursday" unless pro can fix the image.
[Edit:
Well the graphic just appeared while I was typing this.
So I guess Pro fixed it. Thanks, Pro! ]
I have Important Tasks and More Important Tasks and MOST IMPORTANT TASKS today.
Sigh.
Will need focus on that which is most important today.
Will need to count backwards:
Paper to P. by 4PM
Balance by 3:30 PM
Get list from N.
Input results into spreadsheets
8:30 input data
8AM Quick check of SL And EA
I can't come to this website from my workplace, but hopefully just typing this here will remind my subconscious to focus!
=================
Movingalong, mid-day check-in
I am at internet cafe for lunch.  Just have 5 minutes.   Checking on my list.
Hmmm..  I'd better speed up if I want to make my 3:30 deadline.  I wasted too much time on unnecessary details.
Okay, back to work I go.
I fixed the graphic and fixed tinymce
I backed out the change I made that was supposed to allow me to set rich text as the default for everyone. That didn't work, and also apparently it broke stuff. Gone now. Maybe I can find another way to do it, but my focus now is fixing the chat problems, which really bug me. I want the chatboxes to display in the sidebar (how many are chatting in different rooms).
If also fixed your day thread starter, as you notice. :)
tinymce buttons are back
The problem wasn't the new version of JQuery. It was something else I did.
Thanks Pro!
We have formatting options. Yay!  :grin:
WOWSERS!
tinymce (rich text) missing buttons
I'm still having the missing button problem in tinymce, though I restored the original JQuery module. Probably it's necessary to clear the cache and it may be necessary to close and reopen the browser.
kromer 7:40 CI
Slow start this morning, but now I'm ready to buckle down.
To start the day:
*20 min studying cholesterol synthesis
*1 hr finish studying spanish
*Pack lunch
*1 hr walk to class
*Spanish exam
*Write sci/non-sci. abstracts for my bio thesis
kromer 11:40 CI
Studied spanish, took exam, had packed lunch.
Ended up cleaning my room rather than studying cholesterol or taking the long way to class...but that's something I've been putting off for a long time, so it's OK.
Now I'm goofing off, and I need to write the abstracts in the next 2 hrs.
I'd also like to *email some questions to my house and *email LR about mtg *return library books (they're super-overdo :( )
Update 12:15--OK, I've gotten moving, I'm about a third of the way done with my scientific abstract
Update 12:30: Half way done with sci abstract but feeling really unmotivated, so I'm going to move onto my non-sci abstract for 20 min and then come back.
