forum software upgrade
I'm thinking about upgrading the software that runs this site - not only for the chat, but so I can install modules that enhance the forum administration features, which are dreadful. I really want to be able to split and merge threads.
On the other hand, I don't want to break what's already here. For example, the themes in this forum I wrote myself, and I don't know if the format breaks with an upgrade. I'm looking into all this.
I also need to do this at a time when people aren't logged in because the forum will break for a while. It won't be today because I have social plans.

The edit box at the bottom where you type your messages? That's where you type "/join check-in".

chatbox about to become much easier
I just discovered that - even if I can't figure out how to get the default channels to open automatically (and I think I may be able to), I can create links that will open them so people don't have to know what and where to type.
This works in native phpfreechat, anyway - I'll soon discover if I can do it from within Drupal.

I still haven't figured out why certain parts of the chatbox aren't working (default channels not created, sidebar blocks not displaying info), but I have been able to add links to the chatbox page so at least you don't have to type the /join comment - just click on the link.
I'm still working on the other problems.

it looks like this chat doesnt work thru my company's vpn &/or firewall. stepchat didnt either.

Love this new chat! I came home for lunch and tried it out.
(I can't come to this website from my job. Not allowed to come to ANY websites from my job -- not even to just read these forums -- so it doesn't matter what software there is.
I am theoretically technologically able to come here, but not permitted by my manager, so I don't try it.)
So, I drove home at lunch just to check it out
Love that you set up two chats .. one for checkins and task-doing support ... and one for more formal meetings ... plus there is option for private chat.

chat frozen?
the chat box seems to have frozen. My posts are not appearing. No one else's are either, but that could be because no one else (ie kromer) is typing.
I'm going to /leave and re /join and see if that fixes it, then try closing it and re-open ing it.

when i nav away from the chatbox for, say, 10 min, when i come back i have to /leave and re /join to be able to see others' posts and see my own. I can type them in, but i can't see them.
This is not a big deal.

pro, i heard the bleep when kromer joined the chatbox today. It's just one data point. but it did work this one time.

i've been hearing sounds now for 10 min when people join and when people type when my window is not visible.
my sound card has problems
I think it may be the sound card on my computer - or rather the driver. I have some compatibility problems and it sometimes crashes.

FORUM SOFTWARE UPDATE COMPLETE
We are now running Drupal 5.7 (versus 4.6.5) against a MySQL 5 database (versus MySQL 4).
And we have new chat software. It doesn't open the channels automatically (annoyingly), but it's not hard to do. I'm still investigating that.
Needless to say, there are no log files. Also, it doesn't refresh in that irritating way, and there are colors.
When I first installed it, the sound worked, and now it doesn't - don't know why.
I apologize for losing another day of posts. It would have been too much work to clean up a second database.

I got a report from someone that she can't see the rich text editor. She's using old browsers, though. Can you see it?

pro, default no rich text
this text typed w/o rich-text. Then i hit enable rich-text. looks different. The rest is styped in that box.
I do not see a "link" widget.
I do see "remove formatting" that's great! ie for pasting bold fonty stuff from other sources.
Oh wait! now i DO see the link. did it just appear? Or did i have perceptual blindness before?!

You shouldn't have to click "enable rich text". I made it the default. Something else to look at when I'm back from work.

rich text - you must set the default in your profile
I read that updating the version of JQuery would allow me to make rich text the default for everybody. I tried that, and it broke parts of tinymce (the rich text editor). So I've backed out that change - should work again now.

rich text in profile
in my profile it's called "TinyMCE rich-text settings" right under the password change boxes. I had to click on it to make the enable/disable appear,

I didn't realize it was "rich text" that was missing for me. No wonder I couldn't find any colors or fonts or image thingys when I tried to type a message.
So, under this message reply box, I clicked on "enable rich text" and it worked great! Yay!

and now it's here by default. I had it enabled in my acct previously, and i just re-enabled it now. At least that works (can't speak for site wide default).

crossed threads - I did it by accident
I crossed those two threads myself when trying to figure out how to use a plug-in called "comment mover". There's no database corruption. (Phew!)

Not sure, but this MIGHT be caused by an add-on I'm using that moves comments. I tried it and didn't know what I was doing - might have moved something by accident.

NEXT TIME...
I should have done this in a test area first. I had no idea there would be so many problems and I'd bring the site down all day. If I set up a test area, I can do it slowly (over a few days) and it's not a disaster if the site crashes.
I posted messages on Drupal about the database errors I encountered. Drupal is very badly written and badly documented - miserable package.

SITE UPDATE FAILED
Sorry - the site update failed, and I spent 10 hours at it today. I'm in a pretty bad mood.
Millions of problems - database errors, broken themes, modules no longer working, couldn't reply to comments in forum - even our current chat stopped working.
I backed up before I did this, and now everything is back to how it was. At least I tried. Gotta go do something else now. I never got dressed today, never went outside, and never did anything but this. I'm feeling sort of miserable.
