Okay, I am wiped out, I need to take a shower and lie down.  And rest for two hours maybe.  I feel tired.  Idid not get the sleep I need; and this started because I came home and did not take a shower, but kept NOT taking a shower.  And I did that, b/c I felt guilty about not brushing my teeth, and I did that b/c I knew that by going to sleep I wouldn't be exercising before bed, which is what I feel like doing to feel good and right with myself, and I wish I could've done it, but instead I obsessed about it, b/c I kept obsessing about what people in the meeting said about exercise.  I don't relate with their viewpoints about exercise or food.  I actually look forward to and WANT to do exercise.  I don't relate with people who do not.  I derive a great deal of joy and personal serenity from doing it.  It's my form of meditation.  And I felt threatened in that vein last night, which is probably a symptom of my paranoia brought ont hrough lack of sleep.  And I get paranoid that if I don't exercise before bed, even if tired, then I'm just not going to do it, ever.  - Because I'm a procrastinator, who has not followed through on certain promises to myself.  But I guess a promise is something you carry out.

READING FOR DAY

New Memories

If certain times of the year and certain activities are associated in our minds with procrastinating, we need to create new memories to blot out the old ones. If we are hung up on past failures, overdue projects, loves, hates, and hurts, we need to let go of them so that we can live in the present.

Old procrastination habits keep alive old wounds and frustrations. Even after we have maintained abstinence for a significant length of time, we may be troubled by unresolved conflicts from the past. The fact that we are abstaining from compulsive procrastination gives us a chance to see the problems more clearly and to then walk away from them when we have done all that we can do to resolve them.

The past and the future are in the hands of our Higher Power. If we work our program now and live the best we can today, we are creating good memories, which will sustain us in the days to come.

Take charge of my memories. Lord.

* * *

This reading hit a cord since I had read in another book (Procrastination by Burka, et al) the idea that in the brain, repetition means that we lay down "mental tracks," which, once established, "tend to become self-sustaining" and increasingly difficult to get out of.  It takes a lot of conscious awareness and effort to interfere with old habits, to break recurring neural networds, but it can be done.

The brain is always changing.  This is called "plastic paradox."  The classic metaphor to getting stuck in old patters is sledding down hill in fresh snow. The first time, many routes available. The more tracks you create and deeper the tracks, you will go down quickly but you're in a rut.

One of my goals is to increae my conscious awareness of what I am doing and why I am doing it when I put things off, so I can help my brain shift out of its ruts.  Using the steps and tools for taking action can help me break out of my old neural patterns of delay and develop new patterns of getting things done on time.

have a great day everyone,
