Procrastinators Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from chronic procrastination.
As part of nourishing and rebuilding my personal integrity, I commit to:
* Postponing any consumption of fiction until after 18:00 and 20 minutes of kitchen work
* Before 18:00, doing at least 30 minutes of job work before doing any of the following as a reward:
Checking personal email
Taking photos (timed 15min max)
Changing or uploading photos as a reward
Coloring (and after coloring one item, I will do at least another 30 minutes of job work before coloring again)
Okay, so I made good progress last week. The weekend was a bust workwise. Too tired and had a number of non-work issues to deal with. Felt very stressed and frustrated yesterday, and continue to feel under pressure today. I have a major presentation Friday that I am far from ready for, and it may coincide with (or be pre-empted by) my first hurricance experience, depending on the track of Irene. Between those two and continuing to try to catch up at work, my mind feels very jumbled and unfocused.
I am resolved to try to spend 4 hours per day the next 4 days on putting together a good presentation for Friday. I have no control over the impact of the weather, but I clearly don't want to wait and try to concentrate when everything around me is in tumult. Ideally I might get it done by Wednesday night and then see how it plays out. Of course, I have to stay the course on other things too. I feel myself wanting to put off the meeting prep and find the path of least resistance.
I am going to try something new for the meeting prep that I have never done before; namely, try to use the 30 minute block approach, alternating with other work. In the past, I have approached presentations by procrastinating as long as possible then setting everything else aside and frantically working to get it done, maybe even with an all nighter at the end. Typically, the presentations come off reasonably well, at least not embarrassing, which is a relief, but probably reinforces the pattern.
Unfortunately, it comes at a mental and physical cost I have too long shrugged off as the price of "doing business" as a head case. Then I am left to once again pick up all the pieces that I have dropped in the manic run-up to the "event". Always behind, always stressed to catch up. It can't be healthy. What if - I can cobble it together by working steadily over several days? Only one scary way to find out.
Goal 1: Work on Friday presentation 8 x 30 minute blocks
Goal 2: Work on 8 cases for 30 minutes maximum at a time
Goal 3: Leave at 8 PM.
Goal 4: Go to the supermarket, buy a few gallons of water, a couple of days' worth of nonperishable food items to stock the pantry, just in case. (Tomorrow I also will pack a bag, since I am in a potential evacuation zone.)
Goal 5: Personal time 9 to 11 PM.
Goal 6: To bed at 11 PM.
It's a good plan. Can I follow through? Back to report.
I feel tired from the night shift Saturday night but it really helped to get my todo list done last night, and be ready to start on the first item as soon as I arrived in the office. I will try to do that more often, as I can spend eons and ages making a todo list. I am definitely not a morning person. I get up early, but I don't like it.
I have been to the gym, read email and completed my first MIT for the day.

Bookending...I finally got the health insurance app done. Fingers crossed I can get new coverage that is decdent and costs a lot less than I have now. These premiums are killing me. Otherwise, not an awful day, although again I spent far too much time wasted in online political discussions. Oh, well, it's hard to be perfect.
I've just had two weeks holiday staying at home, and had lots of things I needed to get done, not least because we've just moved house. But 1) I procrastinated dreadfully and 2) I feel stressed out because I hardly got any relaxation.
Now I'm back at work so have to do all the catching up, and I have no idea where I'm going to find the time, let alone making the phone calls I was putting off last week. My procrastination mode is already kicking in big time and I've only been back 4 hours!
OK, start gently by writing up this mornings reports.
(10 mins later) ok, afternoon screwed up already - just found I've been scheduled a meeting with my boss in 2 hours. Going to have to prepare for that first, then back to reports.
Got half way through first report. Then got a whole load of other stuff to do which sort of took over but was all worthwhile doing. Stil ldon't know when i'm goignt ofinish the reports though
