Readings for Day

Talent--I don't know what that is. It's will. You dream a dream and then you build it.
  —Philippe Petit

Even the most accomplished pianists begin at some point by playing simple
scales and exercises. With daily practice, their hands learn to find the
correct notes and become limber enough to play well. They learn each
new piece of music very slowly at first, until, with study and practice,
they can play almost without effort.

In the beginning, the pianist only dreams of being an accomplished
musician. This dream helps the artist through many hours of practice and
study.

Talent is really the combination of a dream and the time spent building it. We develop our
ability by devoting time to the skills that interest us. Like the
musician, we become talented through daily practice - the daily building
of a dream. By developing our talents, we develop who we are.

Who am I becoming today?

No Doormats Here

When we work the Twelve Steps, we grow in self-respect. Abstaining from
compulsive procrastinating gives us new self-confidence. We no longer need to
feel either inferior or superior, but we can take our proper place as
an equal to those around us.

Many of us used to let ourselves be manipulated because of a lack of
self-respect. We may also have tried to manipulate others. Once we have
taken an inventory and gotten rid of past guilts and defects, we embark
on a new way of living. Just as we do not try to control the behavior
of those we live with, we also do not permit them to control ours.

We are responsible to our Higher Power and responsible for our own
actions. We look for opportunities to serve and to give freely of what
we have been given. We respect the new life that Higher Power has chosen to give
us, and we intend to use it as He directs. Saying no to requests and
demands, which interfere with and jeopardize our program is sometimes
necessary for our recovery.

Thank You, Higher Power, for self-respect.

Scribbler's Week-ending CI 10:40 a.m.

I'm starting late due to sleeping after driving back from an out-of-town show last night and so getting to bed very late. Lots to do, including some deadlines and scheduled meeting, and I'm qutting early because my kids are with me this weekend. I got some happy-sounding news yesterday: My one-time best client may pay the $10,000 they owe me before too long. Of course, talk is cheap, but it's better than being told to give up hope. Thanks to all for reading and posting. It really seems to make a difference to have an audience of nameless, faceless people as I go about my day. That is probably crazy, but if it works I'm going to work it. And now...

Putting the day into gear

Okay, have managed to waste some time on the internet looking at news that doesn't interest me and fritter away some more time reading email. Time to get started.

Goal 1: Continue to try to grind away 15 minutes per task at a time (have some required office paperwork and billing things to handle today, besides regular cases)

Goal 2: Stay focused, no non-work internet or email until 6 PM.

Goal 3: Try yet again to leave by 8 PM.

Back later.

internet frittering

Thank you for admitting your internet time waster. I also waste time reading articles like how many twitter followers Ashton Kutcher has. I am going to try and change my browser settings so my home page goes directly to google search or my email then maybe I won't be tempted?  UGH

Vic 5/13/11

Show up (done) called program buddy in pm when I was stressed and negative, She reminded me that "gratitude" is a short cut to HP and to take a "praise" break- it worked!! Then I saw the article below:

Science is showing that gratitude isimportant for how good we feel psychologically and socially. It increases howmuch positive emotion we feel and decreases negative emotion. It raises ouroverall satisfaction with life and helps us have an overall positive outlook. It has also been shown to reduce health complaints and help us cope withdifficulties. It even seems to reduce the importance we place on materialgoods. And contrary to what we may think, it also appears that it couldincrease our ability to achieve our goals.

Why does it work? We have a naturalfocus on what goes wrong in our daily lives often going over and over thesethings in our head. We are quick to notice even the smallest of problems, yetwe rarely spend any time at all dwelling on the good things. Things thatbrought us a quick smile or felt good are all to often forgotten or perhaps noteven noticed in the first place.

This action is simple but incredibly powerful. It's about taking the timeto notice the good things in our lives and get the more from these. What'smore, if parents remember to talk about the things they're grateful for, thiscan also help their children learn to think about the good things and hopefullyget the benefit of a gratitude habit for the rest of their lives.

Me: Maybe that is why Friday's seem better, we say "Thank God" it's friday. I wonder if I say "thank God" it's Monday what would happen?(ha ha ) hmmmmmmmm worth a try!

Journey 9 am

Feeling somewhat better this morning. The test scheduled for the weekend has been cancelled, because some people didn't have their sh*t together.  Not my group of course, we were ready!   The test will be rescheduled but I'm glad I have the weekend off to recover from this cold.  I am working from home today and still not completely well, but I want to put in a full day of work today.   I wasn't up to going to the gym, but I am going to take a walk at lunchtime.

I've been dawdling around and feeling sorry for myself for the last hour, but now I'm going to make my todo list and get to work.   I will not expect to get mountains of work done but I will plan to make a reasonable dent in the mountain anyway.  Back with todo list shortly.   I'll check in frequently today as I'll be very tempted to get off track today.   I will commit to making a reasonable todo list, finishing it, and then stop - no more work when the list is done even if I finish early.

No meetings today at least!  /me hates meetings.

Journey 10:30

Thanks Hope!

I have my todo list, and I've read and responded to email and taken care of several small todos that showed up on today's email.   Now I'm going to do my time sheet for the week and figure out how to report my sick day.   I'm starting instant boss and I'll be checking in frequently.

Update 11:00 time reporting stuff done, now work on security rules for script.

Positive thoughts

Beaming you a mental TaB as a pick me up.

Journey 11:40

Thanks for the TaB I needed that!

Security rules done, now I'm going to try to set this script to run on a timer and see if it works.  After that, I'm taking a lunchtime walk which will be my exercise for the day.

Update 12:30 I set the timer and I also issued a command to run it NOW and it says it ran with cc=0 but I don't see the correct results.   anyway, I did what I planned on this today and I'll troubleshoot it on Monday.  Now I'm going for a walk.

1:45 back from walk, I can tell I'm getting in better shape because my normal 1-hour walk took only 45 minutes!  Or maybe it was Ke$ha on the mp3 player (key-dollarsign-hah if you're a Gleek).  Anyway, it's hot out there and I need a shower but I'm going to work on a really awful administrative task for 30 minutes and then reward myself with a bath.

2:30 worked on admin task, not finished but I did what I planned for today.  break time

4:25 had a nice bath, realized it was payday so I took care of some personal biz and paid the bills.  Now back to the work that pays me the money so I can pay the bills!  I need to figure out who to invite to  ameeting to discuss next weekend and find a time that the people in India can attend.   I'm running out of energy, so I'll probably work one more hour or so.

4:40 meeting scheduled.   All MITs are complete.  I have two more tasks that I wanted to work on today, so I'll give them each half an hour then call it a day for work and go make dinner.

5:30 I spent an hour doing that last half hour's work, so I'm just going to 'touch'the last item and make a note of where I am and what needs to be done next, then I'm stopping work for the day.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Hypatia's check-in

Happy Friday everyone!

I couldn't join yesterday's thread as our work software decided to declare it "potentially offensive".

This morning has been disrupted as my disabled husband had a fall just as I was about to leave for work.  We had to get our emergency support team out to get him up, and then I had to do a major clear up as he had the fall on the way to the toilet.  He's got a massive lump on his thigh which I think is just a haematoma,.  I've taken carer's leave for the morning to keep an eye on him, and will go in for the lunchtime meeting.

This afternoon

  • yesterday's reports
  • AH forms
  • clear in-tray

This evening

  • ring bungalow vendor
  • Maths revision
  • work on new OU course
  • ironing
  • make pastry

2 pm

Thanks for the starter lennon.

I have really stuffed up today Embarassed. My plan was to go in to my client's office to work, which I try to do regularly on Fridays. Around 11 pm last night I was pretty much ready, had even packed up some things. Then I started looking at stuff on the internet until after 3 am. Then I admitted to myself that I would be too tired to get up at 6.15 am and drive (safely!) for 45 mins, work effectively for 8 hours and drive home again, so decided not to go.

Slept in till late. I can do some of the work from home, but so far haven't. I can see this is to do with some bad feelings I have about my work situation, but can't see how to resolve things yet.

Need to commit to going in on Monday as a substitute for today. It does help to go through the motions.
