Yay, holiday weekend is starting now for me :) Will be off from work on Friday :)
Today: walked, stretched, work. Finally used half of giftcard from December (lol). Rode train home, fixed & ate dinner. Checked Internet sites. No one mad from me "telling it like it is" on my other group yesterday, which I don't do often; but when opinions are shared, sometimes I want to chime in with mine! ;)
Tonight: my goal is goofing off, but I might do a little around the condo. I'm supposed to do "a lot" tomorrow ;)
Bummer, I got off to such a good start this morning with a healthy breakfast, and then writing out my goals, and then went careening off the tracks into 2 1/2 hours of internet surfing. This is my one area I'm always stuck on. But onwards!
Finished Chapter 13, and an unexpected Appendix, had lunch, and am ready to continue on. Cramming for finals is a little stressful, but it feels good to be so close to the end and to have to have such concentration and focus.
Very busy day here, which is good in a way, but people are here. With each person added to my day, the chance of a screw up doubles. Nearly all are from my 12 step program, which is okay, but when a non 12 stepper is around, I sometimes try to protect my anonymity (depending on the person, naturally). Stress, stress, stresss! In any event...
To do:
(X)morning
(X)spiritual time
(almost)finish main project
(X)put helper to work, far away from me (more on that later)
(X)take care of project B
Good morning, friends...After actually getting 8 hours sleep (yay!) I woke up thinking about this site and thanking God for you-all - truly one of the bright spots in my life. Working at home, for someone as powerlessness as I am over compulsive procrastinating, was like a death-trap for my spirit. The 12 Steps have been part of my life for 28 years but I have never had much hope, nevermind serenity, about my "time management issues" until now.
I've taken Steps 1-3 on procrastination now. So to live with my decision in Step 3, I am committing to daily prayer, continuing in the Steps, and practicing the Tools especially regular check-ins here. I am overwhelmed with gratitude that there is a solution, and that I am not alone. Thank you, thank you!
Today's MITs:
Finish and send the rig proposal outline (1 hour)
Call G's bookkeeper and schedule time to decide how to respond (10 minutes)
Take time to think and respond to G's bookkeeper (20 minutes)
update all State Status and send to team (1 hour)
Spend one hour on overdue tasks (1 hour)
(pause, breathe, pray, eat, adapt as needed) (45 mins)
Spend one hour on anything about money (1 hour)
12-Step meeting tonight (Call D to see if ride-share)
Thanks Edge and Jo, and amen to that amen! For some reason I can't edit my checkin today, so following up here.
The rig proposal is done and sent, but it took 3 hours not 1. I'm noticing that most tasks take me about 3x as long as my orginal estimate. So I'm going to track that for a few more days, see if it's true across the board. If so it calls for some new acceptance and self-honesty about my life and work. Potentially some core revelations under there...and I'm not sure I'm going to like them!
It is now 2 p.m. and I planned on being much further along. Trying not to be discouraged. Some emails came in about the course modules I thought I finished editing yesterday, so I need to digest them. Any work on that will take priority over the other MITs I scheduled today. So, off to it...
Actually the course-edit follow-up did not take long - AND (drum roll)...I actually did one hour plus of money-related stuff! This is huge for me. I usually get tummy-twisting, dry-mouth panic attacks just from logging onto my banking website. Today I actually managed to do some work on it, pay bills, update some financial profile stuff, print out a budget to think about- unbelievable for me. Thank God and PA!
Rest of the day was anticlimactic, small stuff but worthwhile - catching up my Inbox, swatting some pre-publication flies on the DIY, GED and DWs projects. Only "lost" time was a long personal telecon during which I played some Free Cell while "listening." ::evil:: Now, I'm off to play, relax with family and read a good book on a long holiday weekend. Even tho no MITs, I will check in (except for Sabbath when I e-discon) to keep my Step 3 commitment. Fond g/nites to all.
Good morning! Yesterday was a work-at-home day for me, after taking the giant itchy dog to the vet. I avoided getting on my personal computer so didn't check in here yesterday, but still didn't really work more than 5 or 6 hours yesterday. Not bad, but not great. My company is considering allowing more telecommuting due to the high gas prices, so I need to really improve in this area. It's hard for me to concentrate on work when I'm at home, especially with DD and the sick doggie at home. I have reorganized a space in my bedroom so that I can work in there with the door closed. That's supposed to be a signal to myself and the fam that I'm "at work". The dogs don't quite get it though :)
So, back at work today with a backache from dragging around a 90 lb dog yesterday! It's so cute when she tries to hide behind me at the vet's lol.
I am early to work today, so I'm going to allow myself to go for coffee before starting to work promptly at 9 am if not before. First item on the agenda is to follow up on a conference call from last night, then set MITs. There are no big deadlines looming or pressing projects right now, so I need to dust off a non-urgent but important project, and also do some really boring but also important documentation. These are the times I am really tempted to goof off, so I must be extremely diligent today.
Back at about 9:30 with MITs in my hot little hand.

I went out for a HUGE lunch with friends today. I'm stuffed and sleepy now. It was fun though. It took me an hour to get back on track after lunch, but MITs 1-4 have been done. 5-6 need to be done before I leave today, and anything else is gravy.

All my MITs are done, and I organized a messy shelf. I think I'll reward myself by leaving early. Seems like everyone else has the same idea :) There are only 3 people left on my whole floor. Have a great weekend, and for those in the US, I hope you have a holiday tomorrow and a wonderful 3-day weekend.
Jo
"The sooner you get behind, the longer you have to catch up." - Steven Wright
Have been falling somewhat behind lately...deep breath, being a bit behind in my work doesn't make me a worthless person, nor does it mean I should just give up and stop trying.
I'm going to spend a good chunk of the morning working from home, as I have a long list of things that can only be done here. Then I'll plan on getting to lab around 11.
Tasks to be done at home:
*1/2 hr looking into research rotations
*Gather data for 4 saturation curve expts.
*Check significance of TF cluster->coreg connections (Done)
*Post cranky signs around house
*Tidy room (Done)
I'll start by cleaning up my room so I can think, then I'll check signficance.
I want to do one more thing with clusters (check connections of TF clusters to known clusters), then gather data for the saturation curve expts. The data-gathering is not a task I like, so I'll take care of 2 expts and then take a break.
Checked connections of TF clusters, and gathered data for 2 expts. By that time it was 10:40, so I decided I'd better go to lab.
Today in lab, the main thing I'd like to do is continue chipping away at this TF clustering problem. That means
1)Highlight TF activation array spots in clusters (1-2 hrs)
2)Check between v. within cluster KL div. (30 min)
3)Research distance measures (1 hr)
4)Talk to KM about clustering problem (30 min)
Whenever I need a break from this clustering problem, I also have some reading I need to get done
Read paper on STRING database
Review network flow notes
I'm going to start by highlighting TF activation array spots in clusters. This is a pretty boring task, so I'll take it in 30-min chunks. After my 1st 30-min chunk, I'll check the KL div, then do another 30-min chunk, then check back in.
I worked for 1 hr on highlighting TF activation array spots...however, I realized that this task would probably take a full day, so I don't think it's worth doing right now. (I think here it makes sense to procrastinate ;), since I'm not 100% sure I'm going to need it).
I'm feeling like I'm sort of drifting, so I'm going to take a step back, do some reading, and think about what I'm working on. Specifically, I'm going to go review network flow notes. I'll get through 10 pages (out of 20), then check back
I didn't read the network flow notes...I did read some papers on STRING, which needed to be done, but wasn't what I'd planned. I'm having an *awful* time focusing today.
Oh well, I've had a productive stretch of a few weeks, some procrastination was bound to hit soon, I just need to get through it. I know I've been doing pretty well overall, one bad day isn't going to sink my career.
I'm going to get away from the computer and just *think*. I think a lot of my problem focusing is lack of a concrete plan/timeline for finishing my project, so I'm going to go work on hashing that out. Back when I have a plan for that.
Taking some time to think/plan has cleared my head...I think I'm ready to focus again now. I've decided on 3 big goals for when I next meet with my advisor (Mon or Tues):
1)Have good TF cluster and coreg function data
2)Have concrete algorithmic ideas
3)Have a report on STRING data quality+some fuzzy ideas about how to incorporate into interactome
I feel like I have an overwhelming amount to get done in the next few days...step by step, whatever I get done is better than nothing!
The first step for accomplishing (1) is to meet with KM--I've set up a meeting for later in the day. This meeting will require about 15 min of prep.
The first step for accomplishing (2) is to review network flow notes. This should take about 2 hours.
The first step for accomplsihing (3) is to make a clear list of the types of evidence in STRING database. This should take about 30 min.
Right now, I'm going to prepare for my meeting with KM. Then, I have a lab party at 3:30 :) After the party I'll meet with KM, then make a list of evidence types, then review network flow notes.
Done getting list of evidence types (a bit slow, but oh well)
I'd really like to make progress on Network flow review before I leave lab...I'm going to try to get through the 1st 10 pages at least. Back when that's done.
Made it through 10 pages of network flow notes, then took an hour walk, then had dinner and read/talked to friends for a bit.
I'm leaving for the long weekend around 9:30...I need to back before then (and gather up a little bit of work to take). Then, I want to do a bit of work...I have a new idea for clustering TFs, and I want to try it out. The code will take a while to run, so it would be nice to get it running sometime this weekend.
Probably won't be checking in too much over the weekend (though I'll probably pop by)...have a happy fourth, all!
It was a good day yesterday, except for bickering with the children: sometimes I can be just as petty as they seem. So, for today, I want to let go of my desire to control and work the 12 steps.

Nothing diminishes anxiety faster than action - Walter Anderson
Nice work, Edge!
You've got a long sit of MITs and Others, really glad to see you knocking them down one at a time...give's me hope for my 'long-list' days.
Thanks, Wolf! =D
Thanks for the encouragement, Wolf! I don't always manage to cross off all of my to-dos, but making some progress each day is better than not ;-)
