My Plan of DOOM:
argh

My thoughts/feelings:
By some miracle I got out of school without even asking today.  I really have to catch up, feeling depressed.  My college apps are going to be late.  I've ruined my future. great.

Katia...

Your lists are exhausting just to read. If I had to do all that, I'd feel very overwhelmed. Perhaps it would help to have a master list and a "today" list?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Procrastination is the grave in which opportunity is buried.
I am so sorry!  I am so
I am so sorry!  I am so behind with EVERYTHING that well. . . these things all have to be done ASAP.  I WILL have shorter lists once I get out of this hole I got myself into.
It is the same list though.  I've only make small dents in it.
And yes, I am very overwhelmed.  Last night, I just started sobbing.
Thanks for this wonderful site though!!!  I know it is hard being an adult, but you guys are so lucky you are not in high school.
Katia, please don't apologize!!
I was just trying to help - didn't mean to criticize. I know for myself that a list like that would get me totally freaked out. I keep two lists for that reason - a master list and a "today" list. Then when I get all of the "today" list done I can feel good about it, instead of having all the rest staring at me so I think more about what I haven't done than what I did. It's a technique I've read in some books - it really helps.
There used to be a thread with master lists in the forum - it's aged off, but you can create it again if you want. Then your master list is posted, but it's separate from your to-do list for the day.
You are right - I'm very glad I'm not still in high school. I have a niece who is 15, and I told her last weekend that I was so glad I wasn't still 15 because being a teenager was so terribly hard. You're trying to figure out who you are, and yet you have to make so many important decisions that will affect the rest of your life and you're scared of screwing it up. It's very hard! She agreed. I'm definitely glad that's behind me!
That said, you will get through it! I survived it - everybody survives it. You'll be okay. Just make a "today" list so your master list isn't always staring you in the face. It will help - I promise!
keep going katia11!
College apps are awful (my younger brother just finished his, and was pretty miserable all break).
Just keep on going and remember it's almost over!
I know it feels like "I've ruined my future", but it's not true. From the look of the places you're applying, you're qualified to go somewhere very good. Harvard v. Rice is not going to matter much in the long run.
However, colleges (particularly the really snooty schools, Harvard, MIT, etc) are pretty inflexible about deadlines. My advice is to focus all your effort for the next day or so on ones that aren't late yet. Rice is due today, right? I'd work on that, get it off in the mail today. Next I'd do CMU, becuase I'd guess that's most flexible about deadlines.
Best of luck, I know you can do it :)
That is all true.  To tell
That is all true.  To tell the truth I don't want to to go any of those except MIT, so I'll send that on in anyway, then go by what you said.  I'm already in at the University of Chicago, most are to please my parents, who think I've submitted all of these weeks ago.  Even if I haven't told my procrastination story, I think you can see that it's bad, even though I'm already in a top 10 college.
LOL "snooty schools"
Katia
Hey i want to chat with you over AIM or something because I totally feel for you right now. Congratulations on University of Chicago! I was too scared to apply. all those oddball essays and its notorious grade deflation. You must be a sav!
Send me a message with your screename or Facebook account :D
Nevermind, I decided to be a total creepy stalker and I tracked you down at the college confidential forums (i figured you'd be on there) and found the info there. HAHAHA ;D
LOL
Yeah, I'm pretty screwed everywhere else, but Chicago is where I want to be and I am INNNN!
Sent Rice in on Time though!  wooooo
How embarrassing though.  Yes CC is my procrastinator tool.  It is quite addictive.
I'm feeling better after this "nervous breakdown" thing (for lack of a better term).  However, some of my apps will be late, but hey, I'm in at my first choice, which not many people can claim.
Come on, I LOVE the oddball essays!  Mine was prompt 4 and it was SWEET!!!
Journey 10:30 and a confession
I swear I thought I posted this already but I must have forgotten to hit the post button.
Anyhoo, I didn't get spit done yesterday.  I played video games for hours, and barely got the minimum amount of housework and cooking done.  I did get to the mall to return an item, but otherwise I was a non-productive lump.  Back to work today, and back to productivity.
got off track a little but I have been working . . .not on anything I planned to do but on another one of those "emergency reports" that my new boss is so fond of.  I'm getting used to his evil ways though so it's no biggie.
Have another task to do for him, then get back to my real todo list.  Maybe I need to start working 16 hours a day, 8 hours to do my work, and 8 hours to do HIS work lol!
Well I'm leaving work . . .only got half of my stuff done.  I did have some unplanned work to do but I fell into web surfing in the time I did have to work on my projects.  I was doing real well before the holidays with avoiding the web surfing . .. gotta get back on the ball.  I will block the newfound surfing sites right now before I leave.
I'm off tomorrow, dh is having a colonoscopy so I need to be with him in the morning but the rest of the day will be free.
See y'all tomorrow
Good morning everyone. Nasty weather here this morning.My first thought was to put things off today because of the weather, but gee I work inside, and I have everything I need right here. Isn't it odd how our minds work sometimes?
Today:
 morning routine
 spiritual time (I'm reading "Drop the Rock".)
 focus on main work project
 make preparation for small work project later or schedule it first thing tomorrow
 general cleaning sweep through house and shop
 paint kitchen wall and smooth other wall
 check in later
kromer 8:05 CI
Hello all!
Back on the East Coast, jet lagged, and supposed to go to lab...I need this place to help me get going!
I'm going to take half an hour to unpack and clean my room, then go to lab. I'll check in when I get to lab.
kromer 9:30 CI
Unpacked, gathered up my old clothes to give away (a bit of a sidetrack but I needed to do it to have room to unpack!), and am now in lab a mere 30 minutes late.
Since I've been away for a week+, I'm going to take about 30 min to review my notes from before break. Then, I'll check in again and go from there.
kromer 9:50 CI
All right, that didn't take too long. Now I'm going to figure out how to use the human interactome. Not quite sure how long this will take, but I'm pretty sure it should be less than 3 hours. Since I'm a bit braindead today, I'll check in a lot. I'll be back in 15-30 minutes with a step-by-step plan of how to learn to use this thing.
kromer 10:10 CI
Step-by-step plan
1)Figure out what a NetworkX Xgraph object is, and how to use one (about 30 min reading+15 minutes playing around)
2)Do a small test project (1-2 hours)
-Find AMPK in weighted graph files
-Find/visualize 1-step-away proteins
-Find those w/in a certain dist.
-write up results
-automate this process
3)Figure out how the IDs I have correspond to IDs in the graph (1-2 hours)
-for coregulators
-for genes in transcriptional response
-for transcription factors
And then I'll go from there!
kromer 10:55 CI
All right, figured out what Xgraph means.
Now I'm going to take a 5-10 minute break (check email+read article on tracking resolutions), then get started on my small test project. I'll check in when I'm done with that (or when I'm losing motivation)
kromer 3:20 CI
All right, very tired and losing focus.
I made progress on my test project, then went to doctor's appointment, got groceries, walked home (had to let a friend in)
Now, time to grind away at the test project. Steps
1) Finish+test code for finding adjacent proteins (30 min)
2) Make a list of transcription factor geneIDs (1 hr, I hope, though could be longer)
3) Find adjacent transcription factors, map from geneIDs to names (30 min)
4) (If I can do it quickly) do a GO enrichment analysis on TFs (I won't spend more than an hour on this)
5) email advisor with results (15 min)
Whew! I'll try to stay awake for all of this. I'll check in after each step (and have breaks/caffeine when I need to)
kromer 4 CI
OK, finished and tested code. Found a bug in the data I was using, so won't be able to send off results today. I'll do step 2 (find list of TF geneIDs), then switch to working on something else.
kromer 4:45 CI
I'm having a terrible time concentrating, hence the check-ins every few minutes--sorry :blush:
Still haven't finished getting geneIDs, but my friend is stopping by soon and I need to clean up a bit for her. I'll check in when she leaves and I get back to work.
kromer 7 CI
Friend stopped by, I had dinner, and have now spent 45 minutes reading trashy advice columns online.:(
Here's my plan for getting back on track:
-I'm going to move up to my room, where there are fewer distractions
-I will work with a timer in 10 minute incrememts
-I will work on my serior project for as long as I can stand. When I stop making progress on that, I'll let myself do other useful things that require less thought (answering email, fixing clothes, organizing my room)
kromer 9:20 CI
tried to work on senior project and failed, so I cleaned out my email and cleaned out the kitchen. Now I'm going to have a snack and then work on my project.
kromer 11:45 CI
I just wasted the past 2+ hours surfing the web and overeating, now I feel really blue...
I'm going to spend 15 minutes working on my senior project, then pray and go to bed.
