Anybody who posts spam in this forum will be permanently banned, and the spam messages will be deleted.
Furthermore, I will post the email address of anyone who does this, in hopes that they themselves get what they gave. (The best way to get spammed to death is to put your email address on the Web where a spambot can harvest it.)
If anyone sees a spam message on this site that I have missed, please use the Contact form to notify me of it (include a link to the message) so I can take appropriate action.

A couple of spammers have tried to get into the forum in the last few days. Spammers - please stop. Go away! Plague another forum.

I recently let someone into the forum who may be a spammer - not sure, but I gave the person the benefit of the doubt. If you see spam in this forum, please email me right away. I'll delete the spam and ban the spammer.

Sorry I wasn't able to take care of this until this evening. I was traveling today (which the spammer knew - he'd been a member for two weeks before vomiting all over the forum, and I posted I'd be offline for most of this week).

automated spammers
Our spammers lately (I just deleted another batch of garbage) are using automated programs to post. I want to add a "type what you see in this graphic" requirement for posting to prevent this. I'll add this when I have the time - not for the next week, unfortunately. Which takes longer... periodically deleting this garbage or installing an add-on to block it?

Why not moderators?
All big forums have moderators to keep the forum clean from spam and everything else not suitable (for 12 step recovery). It is not good to have only one person, pro, tode the cleaning because pro might be away for a week or so. According to 12 step we should all serve in our turn.

Today's spammer was particularly obnoxious. It was an automated program, apparently, and a ton of spam messages were posted. Happily I found a way to delete many at once. The spammer has been banned, and a new rule added to the access list to try and keep it from happening in the future.
I'll never keep them out completely, but I can make it difficult.

eastern european spammers
I've noticed that all our spammers are from Eastern Europe (I can tell from the domain) - Russia, Ukraine, Belarus (near Ukraine). We've never had a single legitimate member from these countries, but tons of obscene and obnoxious spam. I'm thinking about simply banning these country domains. It would save a lot of aggravation.

I logged in this morning to see more trash posted. I deleted it, and found a way to block this particular person from doing it again (even under new email addresses).
Why do they do this? Is anyone really stupid enough to click those links?

Email address: mynameis@mail.nnov.ru has been permanently banned from this forum for posting messages consisting of nothing but links. I suspect this is the same spammer as last time - just with a new account.
I'm trying to decide whether it's more trouble to take steps to tighten up the posting authorization, or just delete the posts when this guy from Russia decides to spam us again. Drupal does not have good anti-spam controls, but I'm good at editing the database and modifying programs, so I can get around it.
One thing I could do fairly easily is moderate the posts of all new members. I may do that. Right now I have to go out.

joe-the-web@mail.nnov.ru has been permanently banned from this forum for posting messages consisting of nothing but links to online drug companies. I'm deleting the messages.
I've found and deleted three so far. There may be more so I'm checking the whole forum. This is really pissing me off. If anyone finds any more of these spam messages that I missed, please use the Contact form to email me the links. They're unmistakable - posts that contain nothing but links to this guy's scam sites.
Back from scouring the forum... I found at least six more spam posts.
I really hate spammers. Writing to the spammer's ISP can often cause them to lose their account, since spamming is against most standard account agreements. This low-life is in Russia - not sure I'll bother.
