Hypatia's check-in

I feel like I don't know if I'm coming or going!  I set out a plan to deal with reports as they came up, but the work is coming in too fast to turn round in a reasonable timescale.  And next week's admin time has disappeared into two hospital appointments (one for me, one for husband) and a training session I've been waiting for for ages.

I'm about to meet one of my junior staff to help her write a report, so I suspect I'm only going to have about an hour today for my own reports.  I've got 15 minutes now, so I'm going to spend that trying to stop my office looking like a rubbish tip (there are piles of records everywhere).

If I have time after I've seen my junior I'll come up with some sort of action plan.

Meeting over at 1610h.  I've got an hour left.

  • finish tidying office
  • make phone call
  • file client letters

READINGS FOR DAY

Procrastination Is Not Fun And Does Not Create Fun

Some of us may have used procrastination as a way to build in time for "fun" and have looked for excitement in the things we were doing. Some of us may realize we actually procrastinate on true "fun" things like sports, hobbies, meeting friends, etc. and instead when we procrastinate we are doing low level "distractions" rather than fun.  For years, we may have associated procrastination with fun and thought that if we don't procrastinate our work or studies we will not have any fun.

What we need to remember constantly is that uncontrolled procrastination is no longer fun for us and will not let us have fun, but a trip into anguish.

All of us have unpleasant memories of painful procrastination experiences, which began as attempts to avoid the pain of doing something difficult or unpleasant through a small indulgence of putting off our studies, work or projects.

We need to put these memories to work for us by associating them with the first compulsive procrastination act. The idea that starting something later or putting off an unpleasant task or act will bring us fun and pleasure is an illusion. We know this in our heads, but we need to feel it in our guts.

To experience real happiness we need to be able to achieve one's potential and use our own personal gifts and talents.  This will allow us to open ourselves to richer interpersonal relationships, to aesthetic experiences, to sports and hobbies and work well done. Many of us focus on whether we are able to engage in "work well done." Abstinence from compulsive procrastinating liberates us to know that we will still have "fun" when our work is well done and give us the time to enjoy other activities guilt free.

Meditation for day: Thank You for the fun and joy that abstinence from procrastination brings.

Journey 6:45 & update

Good morning!  another work from home day.   I did ok yesterday, not great.   Had to drop off my daughter's car at the shop at 5:00 pm so it cut the day a bit short.

I almost finished all the prep for this weekend's install but I still have about another hour of work to do on it, and I didn't get anything done on the horrid documentation project.   I'll get started on the final prep for this weekend now, and when it gets light outside I'll decide if it's too cold to run outside - if it is I'll do an exercise video inside.   I'm a big weenie when it comes to cold weather!

Update 9:30 I did run outside but it was cold for me.  Now it's ok, about 53, but when I started it was 48 degrees which is way cold to me!   You northern people are probably laughing, and I saw my neighbor out feeding his horse wearing shorts and a t-shirt.   I had on sweatpants, underarmor shirt, a hoodie, and earmuffs; and I was freezing.  But I'm glad I did it - it's a beautiful sunny day and I enjoyed getting outside and soaking up some nature and visiting the neighborhood dogs and horses.    I always carry a pocketful of mini dog biscuits and baby carrots so all the animals love me lol.

OK, so I made todo list and read email before exercise, but I haven't plugged my todos into my schedule so I'll do that now.  Then I'll plug away at the items on the list, coming back here if I get stuck or distracted.
