todayfirst 9:05AM EST

Got back from my trip. Actually was in the office yesterday but was in no mood to really work or post. The programming I was trying so hard to figure out before I left (and making progress on) was made completely unnecessary by a change in requirements while I was gone. :(

Woke up grumpy today but I'm working on that attitude thing and feeling a bit better already! Hope you all have been doing well and working on your goals!

DONE:
-workout :)
-checked emails

TODO:
-Project Y - task a through d
-Review materials from training I missed
-Weekly review
-Documentation updates
-one meeting

hi todayfirst!!

Fellow programmer - I missed you here!

>The programming I was trying so hard to figure out before I left (and making progress on) was made completely unnecessary by a change in requirements while I was gone.

Ugh. That would knock me way off balance. Good for you for bouncing back so quickly.

Welcome back.

Hope you the rest of your week goes better. I always have a hard time adjusting back to work after vacation. Aren't we supposed to be all relaxed and peaceful when we get back? :?

vacation

Somehow jetlag just isn't conducive to being relaxed and peaceful. Anyways, vacation was nice while it lasted! :)

self-employed people rarely get vacations

:(

I need to work on that.

self-employed vacations

It's good to work some time for vacations into your contracts when you make them. I didn't do that when I was contracting but fortunately my (only) customer took pity on me and let me take some time now and again. I think the other contractors I now work with have been able to negotiate a couple weeks a year into the deal. Even if it's unpaid, it's good to get some time off.

Hi Folks,

Todo today

up prayer
1 hour legal/admin project
craft project
emails
post
washing machine on
tidy up kitchen
tidy up living room
sort various papers etc
out for food shopping and bank (keep cool)
email Mum and SIL
email friend date
find info for happening
post info to friend
be in for and entertain repair man
out to evening class
prayer bed sleep

So far I've done bits of this and only blew it when I complained museum that they did not have the info I needed. They put the phone down on me. hmmm...

Otherwise OK bank no problem

Seems to me that the more I do of my legal/admin work the more I get badtempered about other things... sort of displacement.

displaced anger

>Seems to me that the more I do of my legal/admin work the more I get badtempered about other things... sort of displacement.

That's a major personality flaw of mine. I think every partner I've ever had has complained about it. When I'm upset about something in my life, I take it out on my partner. I don't have a partner now (lucky for humanity :P )

Technically this is about last night. But I'm proud of myself b/c I came home, scooped the cats' pan, emptied the drainboard, put away some clothes, took a shower, watched a little tv, then chose to do my rehab and meditate instead of watching more tv. Got to bed 5 minutes early, woke up only 10 minutes late.

Already done:
Morning routine
Ate breakfast
Take pills/allergy meds
Check work/personal email for urgent stuff

And now I'm off to my training! Have a great day, everyone. 8)

Last night

Congrats on getting in bed. That's always a toughy, but worth it the next day! Have fun at training :)

I have the WORST time getting to bed on time!!

I want to work on getting to bed on time. I haven't been taking this seriously enough. There are consequences that I do not like when I stay up too late!! (See how I avoided "shoulds" in that sentence? :) )

Me, too!

For a while, the only time I felt alive and like my brain was functioning and not totally miserable was from 9 pm - 1 am. I didn't want to give that up. I kept a sleep diary for 10 days, and was amazed to see how quickly the sleep deprivation adds up. That helped me make sleep a priority.

Two things that are helping me stick to my bedtime - the autoshutdown program and my new DVR!!! So easy to just record a program, even if I'm in the middle of it.

Oh, but I do love to stay up late and blog and surf the web. I'm trying to find a way to do that on weekends as a reward for being good during the week.

I congratulate you on your avoidance of 'should.' ;)

sleep diary?

What's that? You mean, you record the hours you sleep each night (or day)?

My DVR has helped me to get to bed, too. I couldn't bear to miss The Daily Show or the Colbert Report. Now I watch them while I'm eating lunch. :)

Thanks!

Yeah, it's a training on "Transformative Conversations," i.e. managing conflict, and it's one of those rare situations where I can use it immediately. Very exciting.

Milo 9:30pm - last one for the night

Where is everyone??????!!!! Sleeping in? Lucky if you are! :)

g-i-t (& 1 Focus), you'll appreciate this - DS started the day at 5:45am this morning. How rude!!!!! Needless to say he crashed at 6:30pm tonight ;)

I overslept by 2 hours this morning - got up at 9am rather than 7am. I'm feeling very disappointed in myself. I need to start going to bed (and sleep) earlier. I can be such a baby about bedtimes ("donwanna!!").

Hi everyone! Looks like everyone had a kick*ss day!!! 1Focus, you are getting quite inspiring. I think I should have a 'one focus', too. And pro the almost TV-star... 8). Wish that happened here, our city is boring - not much filmed here at all. If they film in this state, they do it in the outback, generally.

New York is exciting

New York is a cool place to live. I see famous people all the time - on the street, at the dry cleaners, while voting, and at meetings. There's a very famous person who goes to a meeting I go to regularly. The first time he said "I'm _________, and I'm an alcoholic" I didn't get that he was THAT __________. Then he qualified, and I almost fell out of my chair. He's there all the time, in grungy jeans. You'd never guess.

There's always something going on here - filming movies or TV shows, street performers, street fairs. Today when I was leaving Washington Square Park, there were three people singing under the arch because the acoustics are good there, and one of them was terrific - I'm sure he sings professionally. He was singing solo when I walked by, and I stopped to listen.

I like New York. :)

This place is FILLED with tourists, though. Geesh! There are 8 million people who live in New York, and I'd estimate another 2 million tourists. They are always stopped dead in the middle of busy sidewalks consulting maps.

One odd thing about New York that I noticed when I came back here, but for some reason never noticed before... The sidewalks in New York are three times wider than they are in most other cities and towns because there are so many people. Uptown, even with the extra width they are still crowded.

I want to go!

Hey, let's swap houses for a holiday ;).

I never noticed that about the sidewalks before (on TV, that is) until you mentioned it, now I know what you mean. They ARE wide.

You're in Manhattan, aren't you??

The closest I got to NYC was Newark airport in a blizzard!!!!! We spent almost 5 weeks in the US and Canada, but didn't see any of the East Coast of USA. I regret not going to NYC for sure.

house swapping

>Hey, let's swap houses for a holiday

I'd love to, but I don't think you'd like my "house" very much. It's a very small one-room apartment - 208 square feet (I measured it when I was buying furniture). A friend told me recently that the smallest an apartment in New York can be, by law, is 200 square feet, so mine is as small as they get.

Yes, I'm in Manhattan - west side of Greenwich Village - or the West Village, as we call it here. I live in a wonderful neighborhood and rents are, in general, astronomical here. The only reason I can live in this neighborhood is because I've had my apartment for 26 years and it's rent stabilized. If I were coming into New York for the first time, I could never afford to live here. Houses in the West Village - real houses, versus miniature apartments - cost millions of dollars - $2-5 million. John Lennon used to live a two blocks from here on Bank Street.

Small abodes

Yes, I don't think our family of 4 would fit in your apartment too well (oh, 5 if you count the dog, she's bigger than the kids!).

Wow - 200 sq feet :o. Our family room is twice that at 430 sq feet. But location, location, location! West Village - wow!

We live in a lovely area, too, we are lucky. We also live in an affluent area - our house is small by comparison (we are very comfortable, but not wealthy by any means). We have a 3 bedroom home with formal and informal living, lawn, large patio and a pool. And only 6 kms from the city centre, which is great. It only takes 20 minutes to get to work in peak hour traffic (not counting the 15 minute childcare drop in the middle of it!). We love it. But it's not as exciting as NY!!

I will visit New York one day, that's for certain. Even if I'm 80 before I get there, I'm going!

location, location, location

That's wonderful to have such a nice home with so much space - and a pool! - so close to the city center. It sounds lovely!

New York has two things that are really good: (1) CHOICE (amazing shops, restaurants, entertainment, and more - everything is here in 100+ different incarnations), and (2) really cool people. These are the two things I missed most when I was living in the country - especially the people part. I was very lonely and isolated living in the boonies.

New York attracts a very vibrant personality type - people with loads of talent and ambition come here to "make it". So everywhere you go you meet people who are involved in all kinds of cool things. I've met opera singers, eminent physicists (there are many universities here - including Columbia, which I believe is Ivy League), writers for the NY Times, working actors (not just wannabees), published novelists (not just wannabees), etc.

Plus people in New York are very open and chatty - not like rural New England where I lived for a while. It is very, very hard for a newcomer to make friends in rural New England (avoiding the state name to protect anonymity). They don't even smile at you half the time. In New York, you get into conversations with people at the next table in restaurants. That wouldn't happen in a million years in rural New England.

I could go on and on, but I should be getting to work. ;)

Thanks

Let's just make sure I don't try to take on too much new at once. That's always been my downfall. }:)
