So I'm starting Friday early! Hoping to have my To Do list complete by the time it's time to go to work!

Weekly Review - David Allen Style

Loose Papers Done
*Gather all scraps of paper, business cards, receipts, and miscellaneous paper. Put into your in-basket to process.

Process Your Notes In Progress
*Review and journal/notes types of entries, meeting notes, and miscellaneous notes scribbled on notebook paper. Decide and enter action items, projects, waiting-fors, etc., as appropriate.

I have four magazine boxes of stuff to process:
Household/Joint Done
Business
Yoga
Personal

The 'Business' one is overflowing, and the 'Personal' one is full, so I might leave the Personal one until (when? tomorrow morning?) so I can focus on the Business items (and so this Review doesn't take forever due to this huge backlog).

Empty Your Head
*Put in writing (in appropriate categories) any new projects, action items, waiting-fors, someday/maybes, etc., not yet captured.

Review Action Lists
*Mark off completed actions. Review for reminders of further action steps to record.

Review Waiting-For List
*Record appropriate actions for any needed follow-up. Check off received ones.

Review Project (and Larger Outcome) Lists
*Evaluate status of projects, goals and outcomes, one by one, ensuring at least one current action item on each. Browse through work-in-progress support material to trigger new actions, completions, waiting-fors, etc.

Review Previous Calendar Data
*Review past calendar in detail for remaining action items, reference data, etc., and transfer to the active system.

Review Upcoming Calendar
*Review upcoming calendar events - long and short term. Capture actions triggered.

Review Any Relevant Checklists
*Use as a trigger for any new actions.

Review Someday/Maybe List
*Review for any projects that may now have become active, and transfer to projects list. Delete items no longer of interest.

Be Creative and Courageous
*Any new, wonderful, harebrained, creative, thought-provoking, risk-taking ideas to add into your system???

Personal/business

You could also just do a certain time on each - rather than delaying one altogether.

Just an idea :)

Not delayed altogether

It's just that I'm trying not to get work and personal stuff mixed up, which has happened a lot working from home, and it works better for me when I don't. This time is supposedly 'work time' so I'm trying not to get too sidetracked by doing personal stuff, which I want to do in 'personal time' like people with 'proper' jobs do. The change over to a different system takes a little tweaking.

Norm's 10 am BE

I've spent 20 mins CUOP - need to speed it up. I've already abandoned CUOP on day threads on days when I'm not here (so apologies if sometimes I appear to have lost the plot - I have!).

I seem to have got off to a slow start this morning - not sure how, because I got up OK, and I've been plugging along. Guess I'm just being slow. Didn't go to exercise class, but I did look at the timetable last night and tried to work out a new schedule that won't leave me feeling so tired.

Hey!

What happened to start 'to print' folder for photos? Did you do it? Has it fallen off the list? (Is it still there and I can't see it? LOL).

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Thanks :-)

I was pretty pleased with myself for just doing it.

I caught myself in serious avoidance mode just after I had decided to make the first call. I ended up in the kitchen preparing dinner. I did have to prepare dinner, but not then. I needed to make those calls while the kids were asleep/quiet. I realised what I was doing and forced myself back into the office.

It was amazingly hard to do it. It's incredible how such a little thing can make you feel so bad when you think about doing it, and then so fantastic when it's done (like it was bloody Everest or something, when all it was was a phone call). DH would find that incomprehensible, but I know you guys get what I mean :).

Phone calls

I ~definitely~ get what you mean! I hate making phone calls - even social ones.

When I'm sure DS is asleep (without his dummy I'm not certain he'll go down as easily as usual - he might pop out a couple of times first) I'm going to put a DVD on for DD's quite time and make all those phone calls. Am also waiting for DD to tidy the living room first - no tidy room (or at least an effort, she is only 3), no DVD!!

News just in - DS wanted to get up so I caved and gave him his dummy. I think I'm going to be in trouble for doing that after all DH's hard work...oh, well, I need him to sleep so I get a break!!!

What's a dummy?

Is it a doll, stuffed animal...? Why should he not have it? Dr. Brazelton here talks about children needing "loveys" they can hold on to to comfort themselves with. Just curious.

Yes, a pacifier

Well, interesting point. I don't see any reason why he can't have it still. Last week at childcare his carer put him to bed without one because DH had forgotten to pack one in his bag. So DH thought that's good, he doens't need it anymore. And so he has since put him down for all sleeping (I have either been at work or putting the other one to bed) without it.

We introduced comfort toys to both kids at a very young age and I'd recommend it to anyone. BUT you have to have 2 of them - identical!!!! We have lost them before. But they always seem to turn up (we still have all 4 originals!), it's just good to have one in reserve ;). DD didn't take to a dummy, but DS loved it and NEEDED it as a young baby. Now, he only ever has it for sleep, and in the car when he's particularly tired.

So no, there isn't any real reason why he can't have it (given he only has it for sleep anyway - I object to kids who are learning how to talk walking around with dummies in their mouths all day), which is why I offered it to him when he wanted to get up. It worked, too, he's still asleep :)

Dummies

It's also known as a pacifier :)

Hi slider!

Hello - looks like a nice size list. Not too big :)

Oooh a kitten - I'm very jealous!!!!!!

I want a Kitten too-

DON'T FREAK 1Focus. (we have 3 cats already) I haven't completely lost my mind... only I'm jealous she has a kitten and ours- well- they aren't kittens anymore... LOL :D

you have a little kitten daughter, no?

You've got a baby in the family now! Perhaps not furry, but I'm sure she's cute. :)

Very cute indeed

You're right, she isn't furry, and doesn't purr and can make a lot more racket than a kitten, but is very cute indeed!

Want it????

Actually, DD got attached, although now that she has the lion's share of the care for it, she is feeling the burden. Was a stray that turned up here at the church. It's a tawny color with tiger stripes, very clean, no fleas, has road tar on her paws. Makes me think it might have been an indoor cat, but I've no idea where it could have come from. Looks about 5 weeks old. Here comes another $75 vet bill for shots and stuff! Hope the other 2 cats will take to her without trouble. We are real softies for kitties--even though DH and I are very allergic (I didn't used to be, and I've loved them since I was a child).

*sniff*

I miss my cat. He died last year :(. He was my baby - I'd had him for 7 years, since he was a kitten.

I'm a big cat softie, too.

are you a student, projoy?

When I was in school, every paper I ever wrote was written in the dead of night because I started everything just about when you're starting. Good luck!

I hope you will come back after you get it done and work on anticrastination with us. I know the intense stress of a deadline like this - not a lot of fun. Bookending and the other tools we discuss here really work. We can do together what we can't do ourselves.

Not even a student

Nah, I'm not a student (although I will be in two weeks' time as I'm starting my MA then!). This is all work stuff.

To be honest, I've looked in here a few times and been slightly intimidated by the lengths of the lists being routinely achieved. Having maybe 5 things achieved in a day would be an improvement for me!

I might well start regular bookending once I start the MA course. At the moment, I'm just starting to gear up to the rather scary idea of making myself accountable and achieving anything at all of note...

read those lists a little more carefully

I need so much help that I put stuff on my to-do list like "make breakfast", "take shower". My to-do list is long, but it's not like I'm doing rocket science all day long. :P

Anyway, your to-do list is to help YOU. You can make it as long and detailed or short and sweet as you like - whatever works for you.

intimidating lists

don't be intimidated - everyone is different. I'm a mum with a job and her own business and 2 kids under 4. My lists are always big!!!!!!!!

It's not the size of the list, it's what you do with it ;)

Intimidating lists part 2

Sometimes the lists DON'T get done because they are too ambitious. Then we learn to estimate better how much we can actually do in a given time. Other times, they might include each step of something most people would never consider listing, like our entire morning or evening routine, or each step of our driving path as we are doing errands, or each action in a project--partly because we need the structure, and partly so we can boast afterward of all the things we got done! But awhile back Normy was only posting three things at a time. When things are really bad (i.e., I have discretionary time to structure and things to do that I keep squirming out of--known hereabouts as frogs, after a book called something like "Eat That Frog!"--then I do the same, making my schedule up in fifteen minute increments. It depends on whether you need help remembering what needs doing or whether you're needing some motivational help more!

Motives

Oh, it's motivation for me. I don't have any trouble remembering that x number of things need to be done and indeed what they are!!

Lists

Your list is just fine projoy. We don't have list competitions here! Like Slider says, we adjust them to suit our needs on that particular day - the other day I itemised my whole Morning Routine because it felt like I was wading through treacle, most days it just says 'Morning Routine'. It's taken me personally a couple of years to get to this point.

If you start a bit of bookending now you can figure out how to get it working for ~you~ before you start your MA - experiment with different ways of doing it. I've noticed you popping in from time to time - it'll be great to see you in the bookend thread a bit more - it's one of those things that you don't really get what it can do for you until you try it.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Me, too.

I remember calling my parents in tears at 3am because I had an exam the next day that I hadn't studied for.

My dad was marvellous. He said "I got through College on supplementary exams, sweetheart. It's not the end of the world - you'll be fine".

I failed that subject, of course ;). But I DID get a degree in the end 8), thanks to meeting DH and getting some time-management lessons!!! He used to freak out if it got 6 weeks before exams and he hadn't started his revision!!!!!

And projoy, pro is right - it would be great if you did some regular checking in, it could help you immensely long-term.

Milo 11am

Checking in early (usually around 12 or 1pm) because I'm bored!!!! I should find something to do from my Big List and get started on that.

Oh, no I won't - I'll check ACT!...forgot to do it earlier.

Milo 9am

Morning all - I'm back!! I did a little CUOP during the week, but didn't have time to write. Might get some time today for a good hour (might not, too...).

Spent a busy week doing last-minute things because it was my last week in my current role. Had lots of frogs to eat :P. It was also a 4-payroll-day week instead of the usual 3 (as of next week, the usual is going to be 2).

Wow, projoy - that's cutting it fine! Hope it goes ok :)

So here's my Friday....

Ta Da:

- Most of Morning Routine (kids dressed & fed, me showered, makeup, dressed, swish'n'swipe, made bed, checked calendar)

- Tidy up for air-con guys who are coming at 10am (just last night's dishes, really - the rest is just toys)

Hi Milo!!

Welcome back! You've been missed!

Must rush off now to start bedtime routine, but wanted to say hello.

I missed everyone, too!

:)

I guess that's enough for 6 hours or so...

Ready, set...

Sleep?

Were you up all night or are you able to do this stuff in your sleep? And congratulations on that frog!

Sleep? Sleep is for weekends!

No sleep last night. Still bashing away at the list. Having delivered one item, I now have until the afternoon to deliver the others. Production line technique!

I'm not going to be too hot at rehearsal tonight, tho...

Don't know how you do it...

I remember the newborn days of 1-2 hours sleep a night.

It sucked!!!!!!!!!!

all-nighters

Sounds like the resiliance of youth to me. :)

Umm...

Well, I have nearly finished item 2. :/

What's scary is that even after I posted the check in, I went and had a time-binge. I guess more practice is in order...

Frog Eaten

OK. That's item 2 done. At the moment I'm experiencing the old "convenient time shrinkage" phenomenon, whereby a little voice in my head tells me "It's 5.30... which means it's almost time to go to work, which means you haven't time to start either of the other two"

This is, of course, total fiction. There's 2 and half hours to go until I have to set off, and this just-completed task, when you remove all the displacement behaviour, probably took about 60 minutes to achieve. Those 60 were painful, and the work is somewhat slipshod, but that's all it took.

So I guess I can do at least one more 2 page document in the next 150 minutes.
