Bedtime procrastination?

Does this even exist? I often findmyself delaying my bedtime hour, even when I have nothing important that keeps me from going to bed. It's an odd feeling, because I feel sleepy. Can we even call this "procrastination"? I'm not sure.

procrastinating from napping

Yes, it's true.  Due to a temporary medical situation, it is is best for me to nap daily.  And I've been procrastinating doing this.  What is that about?

Too tired to sleep...

The sleepier I am, the less I can go to bed.
Even if I'm falling asleep at the computer.
I just get in a 'zombie' like state.
I'll just... close... these webpages....
*blank stare*

On the worst nights, sometime around dawn I think I start to wake up a little. And ironically, that's what I need to be able to close everything down and go to sleep.

Sometimes I've just gone and lay down on my bed, and gone to sleep with all my clothes on (and occasionally the light).
I guess that actually is the lesser of two evils.

One of my vague plans, is 'early night Wednesday'. I usually manage to have a good routine on Sunday night (I go to a friends, have dinner ridiculously early, and don't get on the computer when I get home) so I get to sleep at a decent hour, but if I stay up late one night during the week, it basically screws the rest of the week - I keep going to bed late, or later.
I keep thinking if I could somehow get a really solid routine for say, *Wednesday* night as well, I wouldn't get trapped in that cycle.
Maybe.

The Internet

I often find myself surfing the web aimlessly until late at night. I think that if I manage to turn off the computer before dinner, it will become easier to go to bed earlier. Even if I don't sleep right away I can always read a book, which I haven't done in quite a while. It's amazing the huge amount of time I waste on the web, doing stuff that is totaly irrelevant.

re: late nights and computer games

I love computer games and web browsing so I totally understand this :)  I've been in this situation too, staying up way too late playing WoW or Second Life.

I've been using my "screen time" - that includes both TV and computer - as a reward or break time instead of just mindlessly drifting off into the virtual worlds.  I set a timer for the amount of time I'm playing and then STOP when the timer goes off.  The rule works the other way too, when you plan to have a break or evening play time, STOP working when it's time for play.  Take your break, or your hour of warcraft, then stop.

Did I mention that I just hit level 40 in WoW lol??  Getting my mount woot!

Wow... Right there with ya...

Don't start online gaming.  It's a nightmare in my battle against procrastination.... ugh.  I frequently find myself up until three and four AM knowing full well I have to be back up at 8:00 for work, where I have to leave during lunch because I'm falling asleep at my desk.  My productivity right now has hit an all-time low, I haven't completed anything in a few weeks...

Well, until today.  I forced myself to go to bed at 10:00 and woke up at 6:00 AM.  Major change, I still felt tired today but more alert than I've been in a long time.  I just hope the commitment lasts, my commitments tend to die off after the pain is gone....

gaming. late nights.

gaming.  late nights.  tired at work.  all too familiar to me.  tonight is a late night for me: 4am and i have to get up at 6:30am.  I did fall asleep on the couch from 1pm-1:30am.  Nice sleep pattern there, huh?

Ah well, know that you're not alone.

Nope, not alone

Hope you have a good day Clement....
:)

congrats!

good job, going to bed on time! Keep coming back!

bedtime routine

I think I procrastinate on going to bed when I have become too tired. I find that if I brush my teeth, wash my face and take a shower shortly after I eat supper I am 'ready' early and can simply pass out when I need to. Otherwise, it is like waking up in the middle of the night needing to go to the bathroom: I can debate whether if I get up will wake me up so much that it will be hard to go back to sleep or if I don't need to bother and I can fall back asleep (b ad idea). I am a creature of comfort, so I do what will disturb me the least, often with bad results.

Another bedtime procrastinator

Yep, me too!  Sometimes it's a cycle where I feel sleepy, so brushing my teeth, etc. seems like a big chore, so I put it off and get sleepier, so it seems like even more of a chore. . .

Sometimes I just give myself permission to skimp on my bedtime routine, or skip it altogether & curl up in bed in my clothes with unbrushed teeth.  Interestingly, when I do that more often than not it gets me out of my chair and then I think, "well, I'll just get undressed" and once I'm undressed I think, "well, I'll just take my vitamins" and so on, until I've gone through the bedtime routine after all.

me, too!

Hi!

I'm like that, too lol

Thank you, gals & guys, for being here! :)

bedtime procrastination - big issue for me, too

I have a big problem with bedtime procrastination. Often the first time I post here is when I'm procrastinating on going to bed. Staying up too late messes up the whole next day for me. If I don't get enough sleep my health (which is fragile) suffers, and if I do get enough sleep, I'm late for work, etc., etc.

I procrastinate on going to bed for the same reason I procrastinate on getting dressed - brushing my teeth and all that is tedious. I will sit at the computer, exhausted, because I don't want to brush my teeth. It's sort of insane. I'm working on it.

vicious circle

Not going to bed on time is in my opinion a major cause of procrastination, since it works like a vicious circle:

you go late to bed ->
-> you wake up late or wake up on time but feel tired & low energy the whole day ->
-> postpone things to do during the day -> realize at the end of the day that there´s so much to do -> go late to bed ->
...

Having a well defined time schedule and attaching to it is in my opinion a major step
to combat procrastination. Otherwise, one gets trapped in messy life habits where it´s impossible to effectively move forward!

PS: troymac, I just answered your other post, since your story seems to be so similar to mine...

searcher,

I wouldn't have said it better myself!

last night, eg

last night, eg.  i had decided that i was finished with my work for the day--wasn't being obsessive.  And it was time to go to bed.  And i just stayed up watching TV--not even that interesting.  Why?  I don't know.  but i'm glad there are people here who share this, because it seems crazy.

bedtime procrastination!

Absolutely!  Pro posts about this often.  Or used to, lol.  Hopefully he/she will be back soon.

I'm pretty good about getting to bed at a reasonable time, but still, I hate going to bed at night and I hate getting up in the morning.
